Inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi (Nyong’o), who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

Now this sounds wild.

Cannot wait! What a cast! I wonder if it will be gory? Will be interesting to take my niece to it

Awesome! She is a really good storyteller and director of actors.

Hope she gets an ace cinematographer and composer, those were the two major areas of Old Guard that I thought could have been better.

It’s been a long time coming. Still can’t wait to see this.

Oh wow she looks incredible. Can’t wait to check this out

If I’m not mistaken, I read something about how the characters that are being portrayed as the good guys in this film were actually fighting for slavery in real life. Is that true?

If that’s the case, I am all for positive portrayals of a strong, fierce women in the film, but that seems like a pretty glaring omission. I mean, if you’re going to tell the story, tell the whole story. Don’t leave something out just because you’re worried that it will sour the message of female empowerment.

Admittedly, the movie itself looks like it’s going to be very good and entertaining in its own right. I am just concerned that it’s not going to be doing justice to actual history.

So it’s more revisionist history than actual history?

Wouldn’t be the first time, won’t be the last

Well i certainly hope not, i know absolutely zero about Africas history...so i cant say anything about that.
Wouldnt be the first time History is twisted, but it would still suck if true.
Because that looks really really good and it did get me excited.

Looked it up; yes, Dahomey did get involved in the slave trade. According to this article, they basically determined that they would have to either trade slaves or become slaves.

Hopefully they won’t just gloss over this but we’ve seen so many movies where they’ve done exactly that to romanticize slave-owning white people in the early days of the U.S. (particularly in Civil War era films that attempt to paint a bull**** pretty picture of the Confederacy). So if this film chooses to focus more on the ferocity and legendary prowess of these warriors rather than the uglier side of Dahomey’s history, I can’t totally blame it. Either way, it looks great.

I also hope that the film doesn’t shy away from LGBTQ themes; according to some accounts, the Mino often had sexual relations with each other and some actually referred to themselves as men. The latter is very inspiring for the trans community, and I hope the film explores that.

Wow according to that article, they kept some slaves for themselves too. Disappointing.

To be fair, everybody in history who’s ever done extraordinary things is problematic in some way (this goes to people in the present and future as well). Some, of course, on a grander scale than others. It’s why we ignore certain aspects to promote their extraordinary feats.

It’s tricky which is why I think with film/tv I understand if they choose not put as much focus on the negative parts. But that’s why no one should ever be put on a pedestal. Our heroes today are somebody’s villain tomorrow. This goes with anyone in the spotlight.
