there's a commentary track with Kevin Feige on the Fantastic Four (2005) dvd and he seems very happy

and enthusiastic about the movie. I am going to guess those comments were recorded before the movie even came out. Lol

Yeah, I don't get the hate this movie gets. Michael Chiklis is perfect as the Thing. All in all its fun, a bit ridiculous and the characters are likeable.....all except for Dr Doom , who was just awful. Given the state of special effects in 2005, this was not a bad film. I'm not surprised Feige was okay with it, I was too.

One has to keep in mind the standards for comic book movies weren't what they are now since back then superhero films weren't exactly the cream of the crop.
The biggest thing going on at the time was Riami Spider-Man and X-Men films. Begins had come out but it didn't set the world on fire box office wise like it's sequel would two years later. The MCU didn't exist yet. The comic book movie renaissance I'd argue didn't come into full effect until 2008, imo. Something like FF might have been seen more passable back then then it would be if it was released today when the bar has been raised very high in the years since the Tim Story FF films were released.

Feige also had little say or control on how those movies were made. He was an executive producer with his name listed as such along with the late great Stan Lee. Now I'm sure he had fun being involved in the making of the movies since he learned a lot from them but I do suspect whenever Feige in interviews alludes to pre-MCU Marvel movies that he worked on that he felt didn't work(without specifying which ones), and learned not to repeat those mistakes from that includes the Tim Story FF films. Feige may have been satisfied at the time but that was so long ago before the MCU was even created and his thoughts on those movies may have evolved since then.

As for the film itself, I've cooled on it now that Fox will never make another Fantastic Four film ever again after the Disney-Fox deal returned the First Family back home. Watching the film now I see a film that's definitely a byproduct of its time. I don't actively depise its existence like I used to but now I have more ambivalent feelings towards it now. They still suck but more in a forgettable "meh" way.

Eh... It was always a dull yet also rather cringey affair of a film.

Feige has said numerous times that working on Marvel movies prior to the MCU has really taught him a lot of lessons on what worked AND WHAT DIDN'T. I'm sure he known better than most people which ones didn't work.

For example he has mentioned Spider-man 2 as one of his favorite cbms and one of the best cbms of all time so he known which ones are the good ones.

Of course he is sounding enthusiastic on the commentary. He is promoting the movie, he tries to appear postitive. He has never mentioned the F4 movies favourably at all. He has mentioned Spider-man and the X-men many times during his interviews.
