I think Ragnarok is pretty much locked to go over 120 million with that pre-view number. I think 123 million is what Ragnarok is aiming for atm but this has a solid chance for 125m+ OW. This is superb. This is a big shot in the arm for the Thor franchise in North America and a huge home run for the MCU .

Thor finally catching up with the big guns.

Still think it will and get closer to 125Million if not exceed it for the weekend...

The Thursday previews are pretty much the same as SM:HC which had an OW of 117M. It will all depend on the word of mouth and also the rewatchability factor. Both seem to be strong which is a very good sign. I personally always had my OW prediction at 120M which would be excellent.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Hulks Up: $164.5M Overseas, $179M WW Through Thursday – International Box Office

As it bows domestically this weekend, Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok continues to rock on at the international box office. The overseas cume through Thursday is $164.5M with new markets in the mix and as China and Japan officially open today. Worldwide, it’s at $179M.

The Chris Hemsworth-starrer from Taika Waititi opened in Germany on Tuesday, taking advantage of local holidays and is at $4.4M to date heading into the weekend. Thursday Thor thundered into Mexico with $3M, 29% ahead of the opening day of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 and 132% ahead of Doctor Strange‘s debut.

Early indications from China, where, according to local reporting, it did over $16M today including previews (not included in the cumes above), point to a strong opening weekend there. Thor 3 is expected to well outperform Doctor Strange‘s November bow last year ($43.7M at historical rates) and is looking close to (if not above) GOTG2 which did about $48M in its launch frame last May.

Overall, the god of thunder and his friend from work, the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), have seen strong holds with the All Saints Day holiday in a number of already-opened offshore markets. On Thursday, the film took in $18.4M to rep 20% of last weekend’s opening.

The movie is notably doing strong business in Asia and is seeing repeat turnstiles as word of mouth has been marvelous. The Top 10 markets through Thursday are the UK ($21.3M), Korea ($19.3M), Brazil ($13.7M), France ($11.9M), Australia ($11M), Indonesia ($7.7M), Italy ($6.4M), Taiwan ($6.3M), the Philippines ($5.6M) and Spain ($5.4M).

We are looking at a juggernaut here.
TR is selling like hot cakes overseas and domestically it's also ramping up. It's doing a ton of business everywhere.

that does not sound right
What about it doesn't sound right?

If you mean the OW number that's because that prediction is outdated. They didn't even have opening day numbers yet, just presales and previews. China OW should be over $50M.

How's the opening weekend looking?
It got $14.5M in Thursday Previews. Deadline is predicting $105-110M now, but I'd expect it go higher based on that preview number. Predicting based on just previews is tricky though. We should have a better idea tomorrow when we have estimates for the Friday number.

Deadline is really lowballing it. I think it can do better.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Soaring To Est. $41M Friday; $104M Opening – Midday Update

Friday 2nd update, 12:06PM: No, moviegoing is not dead, despite summer seeing its lowest ticket sales in 11 years. It’s just a product-run business and audiences need something event worthy that justifies them to step away from Netflix on a 70? 4K HDTV. Enter, Disney/Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, the best of the three, and it’s poised to make per industry estimates $41M today (including last night’s $14.5M) and $104M for the weekend at 4,080 further lifted by Imax, PLF, D-Box and 3D formats.

Typically, Marvel films dip slightly on Saturday when compared to their Thursday night/Friday gross, read Guardians of the Galaxy 2 declined 9%, Doctor Strange 4%, but there’s a huge groundswell of great buzz around Thor: Ragnarok, so it will be interesting to see how that impacts ticket sales. As PostTrack indicated, already a third of Thursday night’s audience plans to see this threequel again.

Yeah, it's a 12:06pm update. The day has barely even started. It's so early these numbers can barely even be called estimates yet. "Predictions" or "guesses" would be better words. The official estimate won't be out for another ~20 hours.

doesn't seem high enough

doesn't seem high enough
Well, it wasn't. Like I said that prediction was outdated and it should do over $50M on China's opening weekend. Still, $45-50M is a pretty standard range for an MCU movie. GotG2 was in that range as well. Don't see how it would have been surprising.

doesn't seem high enough

A 53.8 million OW (basing it on the 16.3 million OD) in China is plenty high enough. Ragnarok basically has no competition next weekend (MOTOE looks DOA) so the movie with good WoM might hold really well. But the OW and weekday holds will give us a better idea as to where this one is headed. Either way. Ragnarok can potentially finish with a 72% increase from TDW. That's big and Marvel Studios and Disney will be very happy with that number.

I also think that 41M for Friday is probably a conservative estimate.

Deadline's early numbers always seem to be really off on blockbusters, especially ones that have good WOM and strong ratings. They almost always end up going up around $15-20 million.

Box Office: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Rumbling to $115 Million Opening Weekend

Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” is heading for a massive North American opening weekend in the $115 million range at 4,080 locations, early estimates showed Friday.

Friday’s total will be around $45 million, including $14.5 million from Thursday night previews. It’s the fourth-highest preview of 2017 after “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at $17 million, “Beauty and the Beast” at $16.3 million, and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” at $15.4 million.

“Thor: Ragnarok” generated excellent response on comScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak audience survey, with 28% of moviegoers vowing to see it again in theaters and 84% saying they would “definitely recommend” it to their friends.

If the estimate holds, the third “Thor” movie will wind up at the top end of estimates, with the latest forecasts in the $100 million to $118 million range. The rollout includes 3,400 3D screens, 391 Imax screens, 616 premium large format screens, and 204 D-Box locations.

“Thor: Ragnarok” is the 17th and best-reviewed movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It carries a 94% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the seventh Marvel movie to hit 90%.

Playback: Taika Waititi on 'Thor: Ragnarok' and Michael Jackson Oddity 'Bubbles'
“Thor: Ragnarok” is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. The character of Thor, based on Norse mythology, was created in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics.

Disney-Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” has now taken in $162 million overseas, including $109 million in its international launch last week in 52% of foreign markets. It expands to most other overseas territories this weekend.
