One of the scripts to make the 2011 "Black List" of unproduced screenplays, Andrew Baldwin's The Outsider, is moving forward with some prime talent involved. Deadline reports that Ichi the Killer and Audition director Takashi Miike is planning on helming with Tom Hardy signing on to play the lead.

Based on an idea by John Linson, the script's official tagline reads as follows:

"In post World War II Japan, an American former prisoner-of-war rises in the yakuza."

Linson will produce alongside his father, Art Linson, as well as with Steve Richards, Andrew Rona and Joel Silver.

Plans are underway for a 2014 shoot in Japan.

The concept sounds intriguing but Miike's style is too violent for my tastes.

Takeshi Miike is a great director. I'm intrigued.

Hardy's got a buttload of upcoming projects.

Miike pops a movie in two -three weeks :woot: If he's able to use his crew he probably does this really fast (like a few months tops). It's a quickie one for Hardy.

This are great news because , although the setting his Japan , this might be the first real English feature of the director (yeah Django is spoken in Engrish but it's still a japanese film , and masters of horror was tv directed )

13 Assasins was awesome. Ichi the Killer was just torture porn. But Miike at his best puts out some great stuff. I'll definitely be checking this one out

Ichi is an extremely well directed tale of surrealism. The shocking imagery only adds to the sense of depravity the movie evokes toward some of our behaviors.

And Tadanobu Asano work is legendary.

Years later, I still haven't recovered from Audition. :funny:

I thought Dead or Alive was good fun. Ichi the killer and Audition are traumatizing.

heh...

So, how violent do we think that this will be? I saw 13 Assassins a few weeks ago (great movie btw) and damn, just damn.

Which version ?

And 13 Assassins is Miike being extremely tame with violence.
