I am a huge fan of this technique. If a film has a great tracking shot/long take it goes up in greatness for me almost automatically.

Post some of your favourites and discuss all things about this technique.

Here are a couple of mine.

Now THAT, is film making.

fantastic thread. i love long takes.

Children of men is at the top of my list. That shot had to go so perfect on filming day that the smallest error with an extra or clive getting to a spot to soon or too late might have thrown it all off. The other shot too in the movie when there escaping the farm was pretty cool too.

Yea, they are so difficult to do, especially with action scenes. Takes real talent and planning to pull off.

I think the one from Hard Boiled there is just as difficult, when you figure in all the blood squibs and the controlled explosions. Having to time them just right in one take. It's basically shooting an action scene live.

I feel the need to recommend the openings of Touch of Evil and The Player.

One of my favorites, starts on 4:30 on

The Shining (up until 2:18, then there's a cut, but still)

There's also a good one in the Ryan Reynolds movie Waiting... but it's not on youtube apparently.

They used CG to give the illusion it's all one take.

The one in Children of Men is actually 2 takes yea. You can noticed where they cut it and blend with CGI when Theo goes into the building. There is some blood on the camera lens, then it disappears as he goes up the stairs.

Still one of the best tracking shots ever though.

There's a great tracking shot in Serenity that re-establishes the main characters to the audience. It's actually two takes with a hidden cut, but it's still impressive.

I don't have a YT link to it, though.

Tartovsky's STALKER

I've owned this film for about two years now, and I've still yet to see it! Gotta add it to my pile of movies to put on.

I've never seen this film, but the tracking shot is amazing. Starts at 1:40:

yeah I know the one you're talking about, great scene. there's also a great long shot during the fight between the river and the reavers towards the end. at least I think it's a long shot. I remember there being a great long shot in Kick Ass when Big Daddy is attacking those mobsters in that really white warehouse room, well, at least it was originally a long shot. they released the clip online before release, and there it was a long take, but they cut it down for the movie, making it look like different shots.
