Universal acquires Panda and Shrek... For 3.8 billion.

The title is a bit misleading. They bought all of Dreamworks animation, not just the rights to Panda and Shrek.

They own the dreamworks library too which includes Casper, Dick Tracy, etc..
This buy was really about the theme pArks and merchandising.

Yeah, buying Dreamworks is a different issue than just buying those two properties.

What's crazy is that Disney purchased Marvel for $4 billion and Lucasfilm (including Star Wars) for about the same.

This is a comparable amount. Granted, Shrek 2 made $919 million worldwide. Shrek 3 and 4 made over $700 million worldwide. But I mean, Shrek hasn't really been a relevant franchise for a long time. If you made a fifth Shrek movie, would people even really want to see it this time? The movies sort of got progressively worse after the second one.

Now I guess you could argue that Disney paid a bargain price for Marvel and Lucasfilm and DWA is priced correctly.

I was going for the more salacious title obviously.... But you can add How to train your Dragon's in there as well. To be honest I thought the deal included DreamWorks pictures let alone DreamWorks animation alone.

Shrek will be rebooted in my opinion. Who knows, maybe even a live action Shrek is possible.

Well Shrek did become a successful Broadway musical. So live-action isn't a huge stretch I guess.

The point is that they did not just purchase the properties, like Shrek, Panda, and Dragon. They purchased the whole division, the staff, everything, so they can develop new properties as well.

Its like if someone buys the company Pixar, you wouldn't scoff and say "hey they just bought Cars for 4 billion, isn't that funny har har?"

I hear ya. I was listening to Bloomberg earlier, and the host was like, "Why did Comcast pay 3.8 billion... For Shrek?" I spit out my coffee and was compelled to make the thread.

So basically they bought Dreamworks Animation. Is that the long and short of it?
