Universal acquires Panda and Shrek... For 3.8 billion.

Fast and Furious: The animated movie

Lets be real. It was getting quite animated anyways

I don't think they can do much more with the animated Shrek, the fourth film was VERY tired and they were obviously running out of ideas.

I'd like to see them explore some new properties. Lots of possibilities out there.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 didn't do as well as the first, but it's very well received with fans and critics. They could probably still do a third one there.

Plus some of the properties could continue on as new TV shows.

Good buy IMO, Dreamworks puts out some quality animation.

What's crazy is that Disney purchased Marvel for $4 billion and Lucasfilm (including Star Wars) for about the same.

This is a comparable amount. Granted, Shrek 2 made $919 million worldwide. Shrek 3 and 4 made over $700 million worldwide. But I mean, Shrek hasn't really been a relevant franchise for a long time. If you made a fifth Shrek movie, would people even really want to see it this time? The movies sort of got progressively worse after the second one.

Now I guess you could argue that Disney paid a bargain price for Marvel and Lucasfilm and DWA is priced correctly.

How much did Disney paid for Pixar? Btw, I think Disney got a bargain for both Marvel and Lucasfilm.

Disney doesn't let **** sit on its laurels, though. If there's a way to make profit on a property they will do it. The only exception is the Muppets, which they can't seem to figure out how to manage.

Competition is good for everyone and Dreamworks is Disney's biggest competitor in the animation realm.

THR:
Jeff Shell Talks DreamWorks Animation Deal: "I Plead Guilty to Disney Envy" (Q&A)
The Universal film chief reveals the strategy behind a $3.8 billion deal, why having two animation studios will benefit both, Illumination chief Chris Meledandri's uncertain role and how he plans to keep distinct cultures intact.

Variety:
Jeff Shell: DreamWorks Animation Deal Turns Chris Meledandri into Universal’s John Lasseter

TheWrap:
What’s Next for ‘Croods’ and ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ After the DreamWorks Animation Deal?

Well Disney has two big feature animation studios and they've made it work for the last decade or so.

Still a bargain. And John Lassenter helped restored Disney Animation to its former glory, which is something that you can't put a price on. Btw, I'm pretty sure Zootopia will earn Disney Animation another Best Animation Oscar.

Yeah, making Lasseter the head of both studios was a brilliant move and paid dividends for everybody.

Good for them, at least now like the other studios, they have an animation division now..

Walt Disney - Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar
Fox - Blue Sky Studios
Warner Brothers - Warner Bros. Animation
Sony - Sony Pictures Animation
Universal - Dreamworks Animation

So out of the big 6, that leaves paramount without an animation film division?

Technically they already had an animation division. Illumination Entertainment, and Despicable Me and Minions have been HUGE for them. Just for example, the Minions movie made $1.1 billion worldwide and $334 million domestically.

Think about that. A Minions movie made them $1.1 billion. That's more than Batman v Superman is going to make for Warner Bros.

Oh yeah I forgot Illumination and only I remembered it when I googled it up after I already posted my post.

I think we need an animation studios Civil War film:

Minions versus Incredibles
Shrek versus Elsa
Kung Fu Panda versus Zootopia

sticking to your parameters

minions/boovs vs trolls/little green men
Megamind/Despicable Me villains vs The Icredibles/Big Hero 6
Shrek vs Wreck-It-Ralph
Jack Frost vs Elsa
Kung Fu Panda vs Mulan
Sing vs Zootopia

Interesting. Dreamworks animation has always seemed wildly uneven to me, a lot of not so good movies with the occasional big hit. I could be wrong, but weren't they in serious financial trouble a few years back and lucked out with The Croods (almost $600m WW) coming along just in time as an unexpected hit?

That's why there was so many dealings of which co. to bail them out of this mismanagement. The problem stemmed from doing too many movies/year and they recently went into flooding the market with spinoff shows & a couple original series.

..and lucked out with The Croods (almost $600m WW) coming along just in time as an unexpected hit?
Pretty much every year they had one of those $500+ mil grossing flick.
Madagascar/KFP/HTTYD

Yeah this is the equivalent of Disney buying Lucasfilm or Pixar, they get EVERYTHING related to DreamWorks.

Incorrect. They get the animation division only. Not rights to high profile films that Dreamworks has produced beyond animation, many of which Disney has distributed.

Not really any franchises in there outside of the animated features, but it's a solid body of work with Oscar winning pictures. I'd say Dreamworks is a leg up over other smaller players like MGM and Lionsgate.

Yeah Dreamworks did get spotty with their releases after a while, especially without Shrek to be the company's financial backbone.

The only two movies that they had make over $200 million domestically in the last six years were Madagascar 3 and How to Train Your Dragon 1.

In terms of box office they basically peaked with Shrek 2.
