“Nightcrawler” writer-director Dan Gilroy will re-team with that film’s stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo on a new untitled feature project.
Said to be set in the art world, multiple buyers are reportedly circling the project which is said to be very different in style and will likely lock down a deal before week’s end.
Gyllenhaal is shooting Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers” while Russo recently wrapped Ron Shelton’s “Villa Capri”.

Netflix has won a heated auction of a package for the next film by writer/director Dan Gilroy. The untitled drama is set in the art world and will re-team Gilroy with his Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. Deadline revealed the project last week as a hot package, and Scott Stuber’s feature film division at Netflix outbid multiple buyers to get it. The film will get a qualifying small theatrical release when it is released on the streaming service.

Bit of an update from Dan Gilroy

It’s set in the world of contemporary art in Los Angeles,” Gilroy said. “It’s got a Robert Altman-like large ensemble cast. It’s got a ‘The Player’ vibe to it.”

“There’s a large cast and we’re moving around from person to person as we move through this world,” Gilroy said of his movie. “The story is being told through these different characters.”

The director says filming will being on March 2 in Los Angeles.

Gilroy won’t confirm if the movie will be as dark as “Nightcrawler,” which followed a con man (Gyllenhaal) who finds his calling as a freelance video journalist who films violent events that occur late at night in the city, and then sells the footage to TV stations (watch the movie on Netflix before it leaves the site in December). But Gilroy did admit, “It’s not a drama.”

“It’s opening Halloween next year, that will give you some indication what kind of movie it is,” he said.

New Dan Gilroy-Jake Gyllenhaal Movie Finalizes Cast
Stranger Things‘ Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich, Billy Magnussen and Zawe Ashton have been added to the cast of Netflix’s new movie that reunites the Nightcrawler team of writer-director Dan Gilroy and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo.

Sounds great. Hope it can live up to Nightcrawler.

LOL never figured they'd find a way to make Gyllenhaal seem more unsavory than he was in Nightcrawler, but playing an art critic seems to have done the trick.

Gyllenhaal, Russo, Collette and Malkowich in a creepy story in the art world? I'm intrigued.

Looks creepy as hell, and I am psyched to see what Dan Gilroy has in store, especially after how much I enjoyed Nightcrawler.

This looks like it may be one of my favorite films of 2019. Really excited.

That's wild. I wonder if there's some twist where
they're all just victims of some type of hallucinogen or something. Hopefully it's actually supernatural.

Saw the trailer for this last night and just looks divine.

Velvet Buzzsaw (Sundance Movie Review)

VELVET BUZZSAW is nothing if not unique. It’s an utterly bizarre film that could have only ever been made for a streamer like Netflix, in that it’s a total exercise in style but also utterly slight - it’s a far cry from the stylish, twisted trailer that had people buzzing a few weeks ago. If you’re expecting a horror film or anything even remotely frightening, think again - this is occasionally silly fun but not much more.

It takes quite a while for the horror elements to kick in, but when they come they feel unnecessary. The idea here is that the characters stumble upon the work of a deceased artist with a dark past, with his work carrying a kind of curse that wreaks bloody havoc on anyone who profits from it. However, the mystery involving the artist feels inconsequential and merely a way to work in a bit of carnage to mesh-up the genres in what’s meant to be a provocative way. VELVET BUZZSAW would have been more effective as pure satire, as Gilroy doesn’t seem to have an affinity for this genre. There’s never a moment where VELVET BUZZSAW is chilling, and in the last act when the film asks us to take the whole thing relatively seriously, it falls apart.

It’ll be interesting to see how audiences react when this hits Netflix, but it’s hard not to imagine the same people that posted about the trailer on social media will feel somewhat cheated by the bait and switch. By the same token though, it’s not hard to imagine a cultish audience embracing it. It’s not for everyone (including me), but I’m sure there are some folks that will like it, although don’t expect this to become another viral sensation for the streamer.

5/10

I've been seeing comparisons to Nocturnal Animals. I'll definitely be watching.

I didn't like the trailer but Netflix doesn't really cut good trailers. With this team it'll probably be good though.
