Why weren't they in Batman Returns? Now I read somewhere that Sam Hamm once again wrote the script that had to deal with Penguin and Catwoman uncovering hidden treasure under Wayne Manor and that Burton hated the script and hired Warren Skarren to rewrite it.

Now the stuff of Marlon Wayans as Robin is old news so I won't bring it up, but why did they leave out Vicky and Knox?

I always wondered this too...same about Harvey Dent. Watching Batman and then Batman Returns is like watching movies out of two totally different series really. The first one sets up Knox, Vale, Dent, Gotham being on the brink of collapse economically. Then Batman Returns comes along and didn't follow up on any of it.

There is a definate gap in time between the two films continuity.
Returns is at least, well over a year removed from the end of Batman.

i.e. he's change the positioning of the commisioners bat symbol. Bruce's revamped the Batmobile. More of the citzens are aware of Batman's presence etc. If nothing else It's winter time.

As far as Knox goes, he was validated once the showdown culminated tween the Joker. I mean the parade, the knoxious gas scheme. Criminals got scared and quick, Gotham just got quiet for little while.

Vicki and Knox weren't included because they weren't needed. Bruce explains that Vicki left cause she couldn't handle the lifestyle. Thats all that was needed. As for Knox. Perhaps his Batman stories got him a better job somewhere. As for Harvey Dent. . .rumor is that WB didn't want a black Two-Face. When Billy Dee Williams was cast as Harvey Dent in B89, WB, didn't realize that Harvey & Two-Face were the same character.

Wait, you are telling me that WB never read any stuff they own? Idiots!

Thats the rumor. And WB had to buy him out of his contract when they wanted to hire Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever.

The character of Knox is kinda in Batman Returns, watch for a reporter who appears throughout the movie, he has several lines, notably when the Penguin first visits the Hall of Records, and when Shreck announces that the Penguin will stand for mayor.

Vicki wasn't strictly a Gotham local, she was there because she had an interest in Batman, she unravelled that mystery, got personal with him and probably too close to handle.

Gotham's crime lords appeared to be consolidated under the Joker in the first movie, chances are Batman's appearance prompted the police to apprehend them. Since they were leaderless (Grissom and the Joker dead), there was probably a power struggle and this clashed with the Red Triangle Gang appearing.

I guess Shreck used his money and influence to reshape Gotham, he did act like he owned it and the people loved him.

vicky dissapeared and it kind of didnt make any sense.

She didn't disappear. Bruce explained why she left Gotham.

And I didn't miss Knox or Dent in the slightest in Returns.

Burton didn't want to make a too direct sequel. But I think he should have. I like Batman Returns a lot and all, but my dream was always a direct sequel to B89.

That is NOT Knox! It's just a random reporter credited as "Aggressive Reporter".

Just because they had a different actor and didn't refer to him as Knox doesn't mean it wasn't him in spirit or style. He had a very Knox-like personality, and it makes sense that he goes on from the mystery of the Batman, to the mystery of the Penguin.

That, and Kim Basinger would have wanted a bigger paycheck. Robert Wuhl would have too, but not nearly as much as Basinger.

Robert Wuhl was on the Batman DVD saying how he didn't understand why he wasn't asked to come back for Returns. He definitely wanted to.

Damn someone beat me too it...yeah there is a reporter in a few scenes most notable when Penguin announces his running for mayor, a reporter who looks like Knox (but not played by Whurl) breaks from the crowd and runs the the phone on a desk behind the crowd.

I always assumed that this was Knox in a roundabout way.

Completely untrue. First off, WB owns DC so how would they not know...

Secondly, Billy D Williams ONLY played Harvey in Batman '89 because he wanted to later play Two Face. In his contract he signed in the 80s, it stated he would be able to play Two Face in a future Batman film or else WB would owe him a certain amount of money, that of which they paid him. This is all stated on the special features of the Anthology set.

As for the others, my guess is that Burton just didn't really care for Knox, Vale, Harvey, and Robin. And since he had complete creative control over the film, he threw them all out of the script.

I can see where union_jak's coming from.

The appgessive reporter was as tenacious for getting the story he was after just like Knox was.

I wish Knox's presence had remained consistent.

I for one would read Knox's stuff over "Gossip Gerty" :whatever: (No offense to Elizabeth Sanders...for obvious reasons)

Yes, but every reporter IS aggressive! The guy in Returns wasn't Knox for the simple reason that he was serious. Knox was comic relief. There's only like two scenes in B89 where Knox isn't making a joke.

Interesting thoughts, now who's bright idea was it to have Marlon Wayans as Robin? I read that Dick Grayson was to be part of the Penguin's gang and that he would help Batman but instead of his costume he would be wearing overalls with an "R" etched on.

That's Burton for you...

Genius is a neighbor to Madness

what I heard was that Robin was going to be a mechanic who helped fix the batmobile, and just wore overalls with the red R

That sounds almost as bad as the "Big AL" itteration of Alfred from the Arnofsky "Year One."
