The web should remain neutral and resist attempts to fragment it into different services, web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said.

Recent attempts in the US to try to charge for different levels of online access web were not "part of the internet model," he said in Edinburgh.

He warned that if the US decided to go ahead with a two-tier internet, the network would enter "a dark period".

thoughts?

My first thought is the class system infiltrates the internet.

Why would the US want to divide the net like that? And what would it mean for us?

Porn is the path to the Dark Side.

Porn leads to *********ion.
*********ion leads to virginity.
Virginity leads to Hype Posting.

Agreed Tzar it seems ridiculous.

I mean how will it alter content/ information etc.

It just creates another false marketplace and reduces quality (probably).

Yes, Bill Gates' head is already wrapped around this.

I love my Mac but they're begiinning to get to be a little too much for me.

I like you am a mac user and they are sadly extremely money grabbing - look at ipod repair prices, inflated so you buy a new one :(.

natural competition to me. if they can take the money they earn to make a better service then it's worth it. everyone will have a better service eventually. sort of like have terrestrial and satelite or cable tv. having this does not make the normal internet worse.

^Um, network TV has kinda gone downhill over the last few years as cable has gotten better.

this is nothing like that

this is explained in this simple manner

lets say you are a client of TeleThugs. TeleThugs gives you this fair service of oddnumber.99 a month and you get internet in x manner. Now companies like lets say gamesfaq.com pays TeleThugs money so gamesfaq are given more priority than SHH because SHH doesn't pay TeleThugs.

Since SHH doesn't pay TeleThugs, TeleThugs decides to let you see SHH but the service when browsing SHH will be slow while you can browse around in gamesfaq at normal speed.

You think that's fair?

if they are raising themselves up by keeping others down then no.

That would suck :(

^Indeed.

At first when I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was about a parallel internet. You know, like dark matter. :o

i think they should be allowed to try this but aslong as people have other options i can't see why they would choose the bad option.

Probably every company will offer different bad options...

The thing is, if just one company offers equal service to all web sites then everyone will switch over to that company and the others will either go out of business or they'll have to offer it all as well.
