Scream's probably the better film, but I freakin' LOVE New Nightmare

This is tough. Especially since they're meta in different ways.

Scream is a typical horror film, but the characters know the typical horror movie tropes of the time, and it's what the killer operates off of.

New Nightmare is a film that meant to be set in "real life", with Langankamp and Kraven portraying themselves, and dealing with an IRL manifestation of Krueger.

So IDK. I do think New Nightmare is a better horror film with better scares. But in terms of being meta, I'd have to give it to Scream. It's more traditionally meta.

I found Scream boring to watch.

New Nightmare was pretty awesome.

I like both films, but I had to give my vote to Scream. After five NOES sequels, and only two of which were really any good, New Nightmare was a welcome change, but it was too little too late.

Scream, on the other hand, was a whole new take on horror films. Some parts were genuinely scary (the opening with Drew Barrymore for example) while others were deliberately kinda silly (pretty much any scene with Randy in it). As a whole, I enjoyed it just a little bit more than New Nightmare.
