What are some Weird Films and Detours by Directors?

Walter Hill.....a great action/violent movie director (THE WARRIORS, 48 HOURS, LONG RIDERS, EXTREME PREJUDICE, and LAST MAN STANDING)....in 1985 he made the zany comedy BREWSTER'S MILLIONS starring Richard Pryor and John Candy.

How could you not name The Driver when talking about his filmography? :oldrazz:

Kubrick was a replacement director on Spartacus. He didn't like the experience and wasn't happy with the final product - and he more-or-less disowned the movie.

It was also fairly early in his career. Most of what we think of as "Kubrickian" he hadn't established yet.

The funniest thing about that? It is actually my favorite movie of his.

Well, he didn’t direct it, but M. Night Shayamalan wrote Stuart Little.

Because I wasn't naming every single movie he made. It's a good movie, but I fear most people on here haven't heard of it. I had the poster up on my wall for a long time a couple of decades ago.

I knew Kubrick directed it but I didn't know he was a replacement.

I'm not sure of the full circumstances but there was a lot of shifting around during the pre-production as the writer was on the blacklist and it wasn't clear whether the studio was going to break with the blacklist and credit the actual writer or give credit to someone else. Kubrick rubbed some folks the wrong way by being willing to take screen credit for the writing.

Interesting - thanks.

Oh, this I am very aware of. It still stands as an oddity for him.

Been a while since I watched it, but for me, Kubrick's masterpiece is A Clockwork Orange. One of my 5 favorite films. Kubrick is probably my favorite director. I also adore 2001: A Space Odyssey and Barry Lyndon.

Nice to find another Barry Lyndon fan!

I actually just upgraded my copy to the Criterion Blu Ray that just came out during the flash sale

I don't know why this movie doesn't get more love. It is just so well done in basically every respect! Also features I think one of the greatest war battle scenes ever filmed

Kubrick should have a best DP oscar for it too, he technically won, but the paperwork is messy. :cwink:

Ang Lee has made a career out of doing things you wouldn't think he'd do.
