Well, in Canada, a wallet is a small object with billfolds and little slots to put cards in, regardless of gender.

A handbag is a little purse.

The inside of a purse actually leads to another dimension. One used exclusively for storage of female items. That's how da ladies are able to haul just about every thing they need out of said purse.
