When did breakfast cereal become so...manufactured?

I recently bought some Honey Nut Cheerios along with some Cookie Crisp, and I do read the nutrition label on my stuff, and I just now read both ingredient labels, and for the Cheerios, they now have "almond flavoring" instead of actual almond pieces like back in the day, and Cookie Crisp now has "chocolate-flavored chips" in lieu of actual cocoa chips like the old cereal did. WTF happened to the cereal of my childhood?

there's too much salt and sugar in cereals, stick to the simple stuff like wheat-a-bix or plain old corn flakes.

Cereal is cardboard, anymore. Honey Bunches of Oats is one of the only cereals left with any substance and any semblance of natural ingredients. Well, there's Kashi, but you know.
