I do wonder though if decided to go in the more pop direction for her latest album because she was sick of playing the guitar.

The other day, I had to wait in this small little waiting room for my Jeep to get inspected. I took Fellowship of the Rings to read, but there was this old guy that wouldn't shut up (maybe 6-7 people in there) and Taylor was on Ellen on the TV. So, after that was on for about 40 minutes, I kind of felt like stealing a car and driving away, my Jeep be "darned." I just can't stand that girl for some reason. Needless to say, I didn't get much read.

I am not a fan of Taylor Swift's music, and I find it hilarious that she made this big announcement that "she's doing pop music now," because apparently she was the last person to know. :o Whatever she was doing beforehand, it definitely wasn't country.

I will say that her "country" is at least better than the crap that's being played on the country radio stations today. As a big fan of country music, my heart and ears weep at the current state of country music. It's fraking TERRIBLE ... But I digress. Back to Taylor Swift.

I am not a fan of her music simply because I don't relate to it. It's music that's not made for me though; I feel like I'm too old for her target demographic (preteen-teenage girls). That said, if I had a daughter right now, and she loved Taylor Swift, I wouldn't mind it at all.

Taylor Swift, as a person, is one lovely lady. And even I have to admit that her "Shake It Off" video is adorable. The girl is completely harmless, and I think it's dumb that so many people attack her when she seems to be such a genuinely sweet person (especially to her fans, whom she treats like gold). Oh, so she's horrible for writing so many breakup songs? Name me ONE artist who hasn't written a few breakup songs. Give me a break! Why does she catch such flak for that?

She does seem like a legitimately nice person, I'll say that. It's abso-freaking-lutely the miserable state of country music and my dislike of ditzy teenagers that probably steers me toward the "I can't stand her" statement. Give me Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash any day, but I won't even start on what stands for country music today and this nation of hillbillies, or I'll get angry and be here complaining all night.

(...and I don't even listen to "good" country music that much, haha)

She comes across like a nice girl. Don't care for her music though, the whole Swift 'product' comes across as too sugary for my taste but for the most part it's inoffensive. She found a market and she's earning a living from it, so good for her.

  • I like him, but he's with her
  • I like him, but he doesn't like me
  • I used to like him, now I hate him
  • insert some other teen girl drama here

I just summed up every Taylor Swift song ever written.

That is nearly every song, every where. Only swap out "man pain" for teenage girl pain for songs sung by boys. :p

Because she's successful, pretty, a decent person, and talented, and people hate that combination more than anything else.

The only reason people do that is because they don't see a person behind the glitz and glamour.

I can't relate to her music, but I will listen to a nice, catchy song any day. She's made a few of those in the past so she's cool in my book.

i can't figure out why she gets so much flack for writing about her relationships or any kind of romance stuff when pretty much every songwriter does. Fleetwood Mac's rumours anyone? some of the best songs of all time are about people's life and loves, and loves lost. it just seems cliched to pick at her for doing it.

i don't think she's the greatest singer, but i think she is a good writer. lyrically, she writes some decent stuff and her new album is pretty catchy.
like someone else mentioned, she does a lot of stuff for her fans and charities and whatnot, and the fact that you rarely see her in the tabloids half naked crawling out of a club or drugged out, makes her ok in my book.

fwiw, Blank Space and Style are probably my favorite songs on her new album, and this is a pretty cool mashup

The only reason she gets so much flak is because, due to tabloid culture, we actually know who the songs are about. In the past, if an artist wrote a love song you didn't know if it was genuine or just a farce.

But yeah, love songs make up a huuuuuge chunk of all music.

True. Even when they aren't intended to be love songs, people interpret them that way. A good example is the Police classic "Every Breath You Take", a song that, unbeknownst to many, is actually about stalking.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't she go to a wedding or similar happening and pretty much stole all the attention, like on purpose?

The problem with singer/songwriters today is that you can read them too easily, if they even write their own songs at all. If I'm writing a song, I'd at least be a little cryptic about it. She's a blonde girl with a guitar. There are a ton of other girls in this country who can do that. I won't even venture to guess a number.

be cryptic about what?
and i don't get what being blonde and playing a guitar has to do with anything?

I mean be a little more creative about how you word what you're singing about so people listening to the song you wrote have to think about it a little bit. Saying exactly what you mean to say in a very direct fashion is the easy way out, and it takes substantially less talent. It's the "don't bore us, get to the chorus" mentality that's killing music today.

By blonde girls that play a guitar (sort of play the guitar), I mean they're a dime a dozen. They can be replaced by somebody else that fits the exact same description and plays the same kind of music with the same type of appeal pretty darn easily. If a record company wanted to ditch an artist like that and hire a replacement, it wouldn't be hard. There's really no artistry to the craft anymore with most of these acts.

I don't mean offense by it, and I don't want to argue on the internet with a Taylor Swift avatar, but.... the good 'ol days in the music business are lonnnng gone. I'll agree to disagree and back out of here.... :)

no we're not arguing lol, i totally understand what you mean now.

i needed a new avvy, the song came out, i liked the song, so there ya go. when i hit my next post milestone, i'll have a new avvy. i'm by no means a TS fan girl, so sometimes i'm as surprised as you are by my sticking up for her sometimes.

the part that i bolded is something i've been saying for a long time. there are some lyrics that are so beautifully worded and written, they catch you immediately. the first that immediately came to mind was "She put him out, like the burning end of a midnight cigarette. she broke his heart..." (whiskey lullaby in case anyone was curious)
there are some great lyrical songs that never make it on the radio because they're too cerebral. that's a shame

Because the charts used to be filled with long, complex epics? Pop music is pop music because it's easy to listen to. The 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's are filled with crap nobody cares about today. I don't think anything is killing music.
