Not a franchise film, but the best gay movie character has to be Ian McShane in 44 Inch Chest for me. I'd be beyond pleased if franchise films had LBGTQ characters like him.

Oops, looks like Star Trek is the winner despite having 0 votes lol. Still, yay for Sulu!

Just voted Trek as well. Wonder how many are now going to vote Trek.

Saw where Takei was disappointed that Sulu is gay in the new movie. How do you upset George Takei?

Films only at this point. Tv is running to a different canon as yet

If you're only leaving out tv shows that aren't canon to the movies, then the MCU shows would still count. Therefore, the MCU was the first of all the others on the poll to have characters who were obviously gay (Harry Potter not counting per your paramaters of having to be obvious about it) with Jessica Jones and Agents of Shield.

No metaphors and hints. Has to be out loud and proud. Not ambiguous or revealed later with no backstory.

So (despite being all the above) I guess Renee Montoya and Barbara Kean of the Gotham verse don't count.

It is curious ever since Takei came out (although it was known before), I retroactively read his charter as gay in the old tv shows and movies anyway.

Similar with Billy Cranston Blue Ranger of the Power Rangers franchise.
Power Rangers with it's constant reinvention allowed for an incredible amount of diversity in casting, I always thought they might be one of the first big franchises to have a lead gay character as a regular on the main team.

The best gay character to ever grace the big screen is Val Kilmer's Gay Perry in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

He was just an amazing character all around - who happened to be gay. It was part of his characterization, but he wasn't 'that gay character.' He was that character, while ironically, he was even called Gay... Perry. I love that character. Great writing by Shane Black, and an amazing performance by Kilmer.

:db: Kilmer has to work with Shane Black again.

Does philidelphia count? I'm being serious too.

Kingsmen 2 will have Elton John - hopefully his character stays true to the icon of sir elton.

The Birdcage had many, what about Chris Rock in Fith element? Actually what about dallas buyers club, great performance from Leto, Broke back? It's in a lot more movies than we initially think.

I think sci fi films (huge blockbusters) will be the easiest to add and incorporate diversity - wasn't 'frozen' implied as lovers or something, i haven't seen it.

I think a large portion of the audience would feel uncomfortable with specific elements given screen time, sadly - not primarily because they are against it, but its not in line with their thinking (religion, culture etc) however they have the capacity to respect it as part of the narrative (hopefully), but i still feel a character from that community can shine in a movie, i mean, it's who they are - not what they do in bed that defines them (at least to me anyways). Rey from Star Wars could be a perfect character to use and let's be honest, fanboys would love her to kiss a slave from Jabba. Wasn't C3PO always viewed as camp? anyways, i'm all for it if the content is written good. :)

PHILIDELPHIA, BIRDCAGE and DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN... None are "franchise" films in the least.

Chris Rock was not in FIFTH ELEMENT, that was Chris Tucker.

The two female lead characters in FROZEN were sisters.

You don't remember the Brokeback Mountain expanded universe? :o

Looks like the majority knew it was going to be Star Trek! We were right!

Great, great character and performance.

Haha oh my indeed. And to be honest, I am definitely here for seeing John cho smooch a guy

I'm shocked it took them 13 films, you'd think by that time period everyone will be a rampant bisexual.

There is also the fact that Chris Tucker's character is not gay in The Fifth Element. They kind of many that clear with the whole flight attendant scene. :funny:

Who cares as long as the stories good.

You care since you feel the need to tell us all, the world even, that you don't care which by many's estimation means you really do care.

Knowing sulu is gay now doesnt change my feelings or love of star trek 2009. The character and film are still good and enjoyable not too mention him and kirk fighting the romulans on the drill was an intense sequence
