and do you think the two parties are a false dichotomy? If so, what is the real dichotomy of our society?
 
It's what naturally happens when you have a FPTP system of voting. That's the way I see it.

Don't tell that to Italy(or a host of other countries that have more then one candidate and generally end up with minority governments) . lol

I'd say we're going in backwards at this point.
 
I also think the true dichotomy is either:

libertarian (social, fiscal or both) versus neo-conservative

Bush and Obama ran the country almost the identically when it comes to deficits, military, social programs, etc. Gary Johnson, on the other hand, offered an alternative than many Americans would probably agree with if he were allowed to participate in the debates.

But with Gary Johnson getting such a small percentage of the vote I have to wonder if it's Americans themselves who abandon the prospect of a third party.

Italy doesn't have a typical FPTP system. They have an AMS system that screws things around.
