Who is Sadie Sink playing?

The lack of Mr. Negative is a surprise to me for several reasons. I was convinced for awhile that it'd be him playing that role until filming rolled on with no casting news for him.
I also thought that he would end up being cast, and I think he would have made a great villain for the new film .

But, I guess we'll have to wait for Spider-Man 5 in 2029 or 2030 ,to see if Sony has come around, and allowed the character to be in an MCU Spider-Man film.

If it is MJ, I'm not crazy about introducing her in a Spider-Man movie, but I'm open to it potentially being good. I'm also not crazy about it's coming at a time when they are doing all this Multiverse nonsense and mixing the X-Men characters with the Fox actors when they haven't even properly introduced their own mutants and X-Men. In fact, I kind of hate it.

What I liked about the MCU was that it was Marvel doing Marvel characters and introducing their classic, iconic characters free from all the past mistakes. I never felt like it was necessary to acknowledge past franchises or iterations.

Also, Jean has never had a big or important connection for Spider-Man. Her most notable contribution to Spider-Man was switching his mind with Wolverine's and causing them to have a Freaky Friday incident in the Ultimate Universe.

It's frustrating to me that Sony/Marvel's handling of these characters have robbed us of a lot of great, classic interactions onscreen, ie Kraven and Venom.

I would have much preferred Mr. Negative as the big bad , and he would actually fit pretty well with the characters they already have in the film , but, he may fall into the category of " one of the cool characters " that Sony won't let Marvel Studios use , for the time being.
Besides him, Black Cat, and Kraven, who are the other cool characters that Sony won't let Marvel Studios use at this time

I know Miles Morales is one that Feige cited specifically recently, saying that he basically is off limits until the Spider-verse films are done.

The same may hold true for Spider-Gwen, or perhaps even, Gwen Stacy .

Silver Sable is probably another one , given Sony's desire for the Silver and Black , which I don't think they've given up yet .

I wouldn't be surprised if Eddie Brock's Venom, and any future adaptation of Eddie Brock ,will stay at Sony , and if the MCU introduces Venom , it may be another character whose inherited the symbiote .

I also wonder about the status of the NWH villains , i.e. will we get MCU versions of Green Goblin / Norman Osborn, Doc Ock, Electro, etc .

I used to think it was a forgone conclusion post Avengers : Secret Wars, but we'll see what Sony does.

It sickens me that they couldn't use Kraven. Utter trash and nonsense. Putting other characters off limits because they think they can make their own MCU with Spider-Man characters frustrates me.

I feel like Feige having been involved with some of the pre-MCU Marvel films has been a double-edged sword. He learned what not to do but him making statements about how some of those actors are irreplaceable has always raised an eyebrow for me.

I still love Willem Dafoe's and Alfred Molina's respective performances as Green Goblin and Doc Ock, and as much as I loved seeing them again in NWH, I do have an issue with that film kind of lowering the chances of seeing MCU-proper versions of those characters.

Yeah, I don't get that either. I used to think that Jack Nicholson was irreplaceable as The Joker, and then Heath Ledger came along and won a freaking Academy Award for his performance.

I used to think Timothy Dalton was the best and most underrated James Bond, then we got Daniel Craig. And for my money, Tobey Maguire is still my favorite Spider-Man, but I've still greatly enjoyed Tom Holland for the most part.

IMHO it's like saying Jennifer Garner is irreplaceable as Elektra. Like don't get me wrong, I think Jennifer Garner is beautiful and it was amusing to see her back in the role as an extended cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, I think Deadpool & Wolverine is the only type of story where her appearing can work and make sense. But like Garner was not a great Elektra. Sorry she wasn't.

I'm fine with acknowledging the 2003 Daredevil movie's place in comic book movie history. It was a moderately successful yet flawed attempt. But like IMHO I don't think any of the comic book movie actors or pre-MCU actors are irreplaceable, at least permanently so.

Plus we've already had multiple recastings in the MCU as well between James Rhodes, Bruce Banner, etc.

This is my concern as well particularly, if the new Spider-man MCU films.

With the Raimi and Webb villains having been used in NWH , Venom, Carnage, Kraven, Chameleon, Rhino, and Morbius all being used in Sony's wacky Spin Off films, With the MCU already using Vulture and Mysterio, and with Kingpin off the table and Black Cat absent , I am concerned that the potential villain pool is getting thin in terms of threats that can compelling enough for a feature film.

Mr. Negative would be a great villain, but I don't know if Sony will allow Marvel Studios to use him.

There's always Hobgoblin , I suppose, and that could basically be the big bad for the MCU Spider-Man, but that presumes Sony will allow even that .

They're gonna do some version of the alien costume in the MCU ,and I suppose we'll get an MCU Venom, but even then , If it's Mac Gargan or some other character whose had the symbiote in the comics, I'm not sure how interesting that will be.

There are other villains like Hammerhead, The Jackal , and The Prowler , but Spider-Man all star villains have basically been done and probably won't be adapted again anytime soon.

Alex P. from the Cosmic Circus has been saying that Marvel for awhile that Marvel still plans on doing their own takes on some of the Raimi and Webb villains, but his track record hasn't been that great lately. Most famously insisting that Brand New Day was going be Spidey and Venom teaming up against Knull.

And truth be told, I'm not sure how it would even work narratively to introduce MCU versions of those characters post-NWH.

I'd be keen to see the Hobgoblin though. Him and Mr. Negative both feel like the best choices for the next trilogy.

That's what Secret Wars is for. A reset and a restart.

The Tonight Show w/ Jimmy Fallon
(The transcript is thanks to help from my PVR.)

Jimmy Fallon: But now you're filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Audience: <cheers>
Jimmy Fallon: Yeah.
Sadie Sink: Yeah.
Jimmy Fallon: And that...and not only can you not say anything about it, you can't even say who you are playing!
Sadie Sink: It's torture! And there's so much speculation, too...I feel like there's like a new character every week [that people think that I'm supposedly playing]!
Jimmy Fallon: Do you tell anyone...
Sadie Sink: Yeah I tell people. I mean, like the people [that] I know.
Jimmy Fallon: Your family knows what you're doing?
Sadie Sink: Yeah! Of course.
Jimmy Fallon: Because I would be, like, sworn to secrecy...
Sadie Sink: But I found out through online theories like before I got cast in Spider-Man. There was speculation online that said, 'Sadie Sink's gonna be in the new Spider-Man'. I was like, 'Mmm...I am?' And then sure enough like two days later they asked me to do it.
Jimmy Fallon: Weird!
Sadie Sink: Those theories, sometimes there's some truth to it.
Jimmy Fallon: Yeah.
Sadie Sink: Yeah.

She has spoken in the past that she tells close family/people about her roles (like Stranger Things).

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: When was Sadie Sink cast for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
A:
“Conversations began with Marvel while she was filming season 5 of Stranger Things, so ‘not as far back as you would think,’ [Sadie] says.” [EW] Stranger Things Season 5 began production on January 8, 2024. [Deadline] Sadie said that “I found out [I was cast] while we were wrapping up season five [of Stranger Things].” [THR] Netflix announced Stranger Things Season 5 wrapped shooting on December 20, 2024. [Variety] The casting became public knowledge three months later via trade reporting on March 12, 2025. [Deadline] On November 18, 2025, it was reported that Sadie would reprise her role in the Avengers movie [Avengers: Secret Wars] scheduled for 2026 shooting after a play. [Deadline]

Video now available, but note it includes Stranger Things finale talk:

RE:Stranger Things - Sadie also takes the dark and cynical interpretation on the finale ending of Stranger Things. Not that surprising since she likes grim stories and doomed relationships based on her filmography and past comments.
