Entertainment Weekly just posted an article regarding which actors appearing in comic book films are the biggest so far in movies.

Who are Hollywood's biggest stars... when they're stripped of their superpowers?

For posterity's sake, here's the list:

18) Ron Perlman (Hellboy)
17) Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass)
16) James McAvoy (Professor X)
15) Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
14) Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man)
13) Chris Evans (Captain America)
12) Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl)
11) Henry Cavill (Superman)
10) Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk)
9) Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow)
8) Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)
7) Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)
6) Chris Hemsworth (Thor)
5) Michael Fassbender (Magneto)
4) Ben Affleck (Batman)
3) Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man)
2) Hugh Jackman (Wolverine)
1) Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique)

Personally, my surprises on this last were RDJ being ranked below Hugh. While Hugh has been pretty high profile in the last few years with Les Miserables and Prisoners, has he really topped RDJ? The bigger surprise though is Jennifer Lawrence. It seems unusual that she'd be the biggest star in this bunch. But given the success of The Hunger Games and her Oscar win, that's probably not so surprising.

So what do you all think?

Yeah, Lawrence caps it all for the Oscars and the ability to work in both
sci-fi action /superhero genre films as well as serious drama.

After seeing Thor TDW I see Tom Hiddleston moving up. Hemsworth is solid as the lead in Thor, but really, Hiddleston steals every scene (just a better actor, sorry Chris), he's worth going to see the movie for.

Jackman is another one, never got the Oscar accolades, but a good solid actor, who can handle many different genres with ease.

Chloe Moretz is another one on the way up. Hit girl was the only good thing about Kick Ass 2, and was a huge stand-out in Kick Ass. Also, following it up with a Carrie remake. She'll definitely be able to carry her own movies,
maybe even superhero movies in future.

Fassbender, he's a guy who the Oscars will pick out sooner or later. A terrific actor, versatile and different in everything - hope he doesn't do too many villain roles.

here's someone missing from your list, who's a huge omission.................

Sir Ian McKellen, Magneto, owns the role (sorry Fassbender) multiple Oscar nominee, and he's Gandalf, a Middle Earth Superhero, and one of the most beloved fictional characters of all time.

Don't know how he didn't make the list.

What about Sir Pat Stewart, owns Prof X, the guy just "is Charles Xavier, and former captain of the enterprise.

Both these guys are acting heavyweights, having been grads of a little outfit
called the RSC.

I saw McKellen do King Lear, while he was visiting down here in 2007, the guy is pure magic on-stage. Wow !
(weirdly, Sylvester McCoy played the fool in that one, I wonder if that's where PJ got the idea to cast him as Radagast).

Cool thread, cool list, but gottta put McKellen in there (and Stewart too).

This is EW's list, not mine. And while Mckellen and Stewart are great actors and awesome all around, I can understand their omission here. These two I think have never headlined a big Hollywood movie and I don't think are big office draws (before you say Gandalf in LOTR and The Hobbit for Mckellen, that's a supporting role and the box office draw is from the material it's based on). These two can help elevate a movie, but I don't think they can carry it on their lonesome.

Dude,

fair enough it aint your list.

but

Not nobody carries a movie on their lonesome, unless they're the only
person in it.

I think what you mean, is who can be the lead.

Downey Jr just about carries the Iron Man films, but even he
had Oscar winner G. Paltrow to back him up.

Jackman hasn't carried Wolverine by himself, he's had plenty of
good supporting cast, and it still hasn't worked out that well (but that's IMO).
In X-men he's got a solid cast to back him up.

Same for Chris Evans in Capt America, again IMO.

Sam Jackson had heaps of strong supporting cast in his films.

I take your point, but Pat Stewart was the main draw in a Star Trek TV series and a couple of movies (although even he had a good supporting cast, kind of like most of the leads on the list).

Lists like this are compiled and edited by writers/journalists, and they're telling me that Mark Ruffalo is a bigger box office draw than Pat Stewart or Ian McKellen, or could carry a film better than either of them ? Ruffalo's
only ever been a supporting player.

As far as either of them not being able to carry a film by their lonesome, I think I've already established that Stewart can (and has) it's true McKellen
does his blockbuster stuff in supporting roles (Magneto) if you want to see
him at his best, in a leading role, check out Richard III, Shakespeare purists aren't keen, but I think it's among the best Shakespeare ever to hit the big screen.

(not mentioning, Gods and Monsters which earned him an Oscar nomination).

Just because it's written, doesn't make it so. (especially in EW)

8) Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye)

11) Henry Cavill (Superman)
13) Chris Evans (Captain America)
14) Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man)
15) Tom Hiddleston (Loki)
16) James McAvoy (Professor X)

Wow, Renner placed above likes of Andrew Garfield, Tom Hiddlston, Chris Evans, James McAvoy and Henry Cavill.

Renner got an Oscar nomination for The Hurt Locker, and has starred in three commercially successful films (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Bourne Legacy and yes, even Hansel and Gretel).

He's one of the hottest actors working in Hollywood today, which is why he's part of the cast of David O Russell's American Hustle. It's not surprising why he's ranked so highly.

Loki below anyone other than Robert Downey jr from the Avengers is a joke
Ben Affleck mentioned on a role we did not see in is a joke, and him being over Christian Bale? LOL
Andrew Garfield should be scrapped out and replaced with Tobey Maguire

This list would be a joke, if they were talking about their comic book roles only, it looks like they aim at the rest of their work

The thread title is misleading.
The article title is "Who are Hollywood's biggest stars... when they're stripped of their superpowers?" => not in superheroes movies.

Ron Perlman? Hardly. I could think of a dozen other people to put on that list before him. Lol
Same with Aaron johnson

How is that a surprise. Renner has Oscar noms and other blockbusters under his belt. (Mission impossible, Bourne etc) Plus he's starring in a David O Russell film later this year and The immigrant which was nominated for the Palm D'or. So far he has a more decorated Hollywood career than any of those guys.

He has a higher profile and pedigree than all of them. None of those others have anything in their filmography that matches up to Renner's performances in The Hurt Locker and The Town alone. He's had his misfires, especially recently, but he's unquestionably a very talented actor, and certainly deserves a place on a list like this, let alone above those others. I'd be really interested to hear an argument proclaiming otherwise.

Not only misleading, but the ranking is a dumb ass joke too. I like to know what they used to determine this. Box office, awards, how many fans they got on twitter or how much they can demand as a paycheck??????

Click the link and read. Kinda hard to call the ranking a joke when you're ignorant of the criteria, no?

I agree with Jeniffer Lawrence being in the first position. She deserves it.
