Why are a lot of new films barely marketed at all?

Anyone notice this?
Basically, I'll hear of a movie coming out, I'll get moderately excited about it, and then I'll find out two months later that not only was it already in theaters, but it's already coming to DVD. And I saw maybe one TV spot for it.
Just a couple of examples (I'm sure there's a billion more):

Fair Game
Sean Penn and Naomi Watts
Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity)

The Big Year
Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson

They might spend less on marketing because more people are seeing films on demand , streaming , and waiting for dvd/blu. I haven't seen trailers for The Big Year

I don't know if it ever had a theatrical release, but I noticed Nicolas Cage's latest movie Trespass at BestBuy on dvd/blu ray & remembered seeing a trailer for it.
