Will the criminals of today be "glorified" like the criminals of yesteryear?

I'm talking characters like Bonnie and Clyde, Capone, Dillinger, and the like. Yeah, they were all pretty monstrous individuals, but with the movies, the quotes and everything else we have regarding them, they are pretty much pop culture icons whether we say so or not. The 1930s was the era that defined the mobster icon, and those that came after it never really did, sans maybe the NYC crime families. But today's criminals are just viewed as thugs and scum as opposed to the earlier ones, and I doubt movies will be made in their honor and what not.

Bin laden. well he wont be so much glorified as brcome the epitome of muslim terorist as capone is the epitome of chigagee mobstas. and i'm sure if hes found people will make movies about the brave men who braved the wilds of pakistan to bring in this insane man.

It's almost like you are "cool" if you show a lack of emotion or a narcissistic attitude as it is now, so yea, I think so.

I think they have laid off on the glorification of lowlifes in general, but then again I don't watch much mainstream media.

It just seemed serial killers and big mob men were rendered more infamous before then they used to be. As soon as you give them their 15 minutes you inspire others to follow that path... Just look at what happens when shootings get on the news, copycats follow.

I must admit this is a really interesting question...I honestly don't think they will. Maybe because crime is so common now?

I'd say no, because most of the criminals today are foreign terrorists. The ppl you mentioned in the first post were mostly in the USA. If we get a really smart thief then maybe. Thiefs tend to be glorified, esp the ones who didn't kill anyone. There was that movie with Bruce Willis where he was a thief. IF there are any more of those thief smarts then yes.

i think it was different because of what information was available about people back then. people were curious about capone and his lifestyle. nowadays you know everything within minutes and nobody really stands out .

It will be interesting to see how history views the likes of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Maybe because crime is so common now?

It is NOT more common - that's a common misconception.

With the advent of the television, news channels, and later, mainstream media as well as the improved forensic methods utilized in crime investigations, not only are more crimes made known to the public, but more crimes are solved as well; the arrested getting coverage as well.

people like Bonnie and Clyde, Capone, Dillinger are famous and loved i think for the way they have been glorified in media. I mean a lot of movies featuring mafia,of ol' gangsters are very popular... ie scarface, the untouchables, casino, goodfellas, etc.
and some of them are very close to what really happened and when people see that they gain an appreciation on how smart some of the mafia gangsters are and gains some peoples interest.
personally when i saw goodfellas i used google and wikipedia to gain more knowledge about the true story behind the movie cause i was amazed how things in the movie were ran

People like the Kray Twins were glorified because they were proper men, the streets of East London were safer when they ran them, even though they were both phychopathic killers. But they never hurt civilians only fellow gangsters. I'm sure a lot of the old school mobsters were like that in America aswell. But these days most "gangsters" are just scum bags who would probs kill kids or women, so no they shouldn't be "glorified".

They already are, there are countless shows about the fbi and cia targeting the most wanted people in america back from the 70s, they are bound to catch up.

i mean look at the film with leonardo di caprio and tom hanks, catch me if you can and american gansta.

crooks will forever be idolised, only now they can sell their stories to hollywood and make some money from it in their lifetimes

:o

There aren't very many famous criminals now.

Bin Laden will end up like Hitler did. Not glorified, not respected, but always there. Always in our thoughts. in our BRAINS.

Agree that they already are.

Besides, look at half the rap videos.

i don't think so, gangsters of the past may have been criminals but they did have some level of respect and didn't have to prove themselves, whereas gangstas of today are just morons who think they are someone

That's funny, I was actually thinking about this topic this morning. There was something on tv where a guy was proudly displaying his authentic replica Bonnie and Clyde rifle. I'm thinking "Didn't they murder like 10 cops back in the day?" History is weird.
