Eh, I wouldn't call blame Pearce as much as the writing of his character for IM3.

When you're introduced as a loser and turned evil because a drunk, distracted rich guy didn't notice you, no amount of acting will overcome that.

I thought Pearce did the most he could with what he had. No way deserves to be nominated for worst actor, IMO, or even the worst in IM3.

generally I love guy Pearce in movies, he simply didn't have a compelling enough character to play so all he could do was play sleazy, pathetic business man or gawky nerd cliche, that's what he was given.

Pearce is awesome in Lawless where he gets a juicier villain to chew on. One of the most detestable movie villains ever, IMO.

In IM3 he's got a "meh" character so he just pulls his "slimy businessman" out of his repertoire.

What's even worse about Pearce in Iron Man 3 is that he plays a businessman who not only comes off as a complete loser in the beginning, but also has the weakest villain motivation not only for an Iron Man villain, but arugably for superhero movie villains in general.

Tony stark was mean to me, so I'm gonna...commodify the war on terror through media manipulation? You know, because that's just what you do, right? Perfectly logical line of reasoning :o

It's not just even that.

"Tony Stark is drunk, distracted, and horny, so this totally the best time to approach him."

it was a perfectly logical line of reasoning. he was privatizing the "military industrial complex." and it had nothing to do with Stark being mean to him. he was ambitious enough to continue going after being rejected by Stark. Pepper said that he had approached her several times. he was looking for funding. i'd say that his use of the Mandarin was actually clever. no one saw it coming. Stark didn't figure it out until he met Trevor. he played the **** out of the military; managed to capture Rhodey, the President, Pepper, and Stark. i think people overplay the revenge angle. Killian needed Stark to perfect extremis. his real motivation was controlling armed conflict. it's no lamer than any other villain we've seen.

you're ignoring that Tony shouldn't have been drunk or distracted. Tony was being an @$$. he was invited to that place to speak to other scientists and aspiring businessmen. you'll remember that his eventual savior was trying to introduce Tony to the guy that ended up removing shrapnel from his heart. as clumsy as Aldrich's approach was, he couldn't have expected Stark to have been a self-absorbed manchild. how would Stane have handled the situation? i'm betting that he would of told Killian to set an appointment with his secretary.

That's not a reasonable justification. In fact, that's not even justification at all. Whether Tony acted like an ass or not, he was clearly drunk. It doesn't matter whether he was supposed to be sober or not, the point was he wasn't sober and Killian wanting to become ambitious because he got rejected because he approached him at the worst possible time was a terrible villain motivation. We're given no better reason for his motivations, especially considering he has a more elaborate plan than previous villains, and not much other than that scene was shown. We don't know much about the character assume much else, or to even imagine why Killian's goals are like this, not even in his dialogue.

the problem is that i don't agree with you when you say that the rejection is what turned Killian down the path to villainy. what turned him is that he was an extremely awkward and genetically "handicapped" individual who overcame the physical roadblock while ignoring the emotional component. same awful personality housed in an augmented body. his awkwardness is what led him to come on too strong to an already uninterested Stark. his desperation is what led him to cut corners and embrace illegality to achieve his goals. his bitterness was there prior to Stark. it's just that he hadn't hit rock bottom until the rooftop. the guy's father sounds like a putz, as well.
