They had exclusive games back then. Even if the rest of their games are 10/10 for the rest of time that doesn't make Xbox a draw if you can get all of those games and more on other systems. A bunch of Xbox gamers will continue with Xbox but many will move, and there's unlikely to be many switching to Xbox from PS or adding an Xbox to go along with their other system. Right now if people thought Indy was exclusive some would be buying an Xbox for it.

From 2005-2006, I don't think the 360 had very many killer app exclusive games. But because Microsoft had the newest, freshest hardware on the market, the 360 ended up becoming the default platform of development for most games. I don't think it's always about having exclusive games, sometimes it's just about having the latest & greatest product.

The 360 had Halo and Gears as true exclusives then Oblivion, Bioshock, and Mass Effect as console exclusives. Oblivion and Bioshock didn't hit PS3 until later and Mass Effect didn't hit playstation until ME2

Software sells hardware. If I get everything you have to offer elsewhere and cheaper, I'm gonna do that. It doesn't really matter how powerful the console is or whatever gimmicks it employs, true exclusives sell hardware above anything else.

Also there's a difference between having barely any exclusives or poor exclusives compared to this strategy of having no redlines on what can be ported. With the former strategy there is always hope that fans can cling on to for 10 years plus, especially when new studios are being bought and efforts put into building a stronger first party lineup, and waiting a generation for it to start paying dividends can be acceptable to many. The new strategy is saying one console is a subset of others - no easier way for people to remove conflict from the decision on what to choose if they aren't already heavily connected to Xbox. There are for eg people for who Gears or Halo alone would make the console worth having compared to another console's 50 exclusives, but once the prospect of all games being available on another console (which has it's own appealing lineup of exclusives) comes up, that is a new precedent which is probably going to lead to lower and lower retention of fans over time.

I'll give you Oblivion since that came out in in March 2006, but the only other game you mention that released in the time frame I mentioned is Gears, and that came out right before the Ps3 did anyway.

Xbox 360 was the first 7th generation hardware to release, which meant back then it was the first available console to offer next gen software. Even if that software wasn't exclusive, the fact that it was next gen was enough to get people enticed into buying it.

and on top of that, with its year head start, it managed to get a large enough install base to become the primary platform of development for most games in that generation too.

Yes, but without true exclusives, a new Xbox console cannot replicate that level of success again no matter how you look at it. Furthermore, there is no need for a lead platform anymore because modern consoles are just glorified X86 machines. The conditions needed for a 360 era level of success simply do not exist. They could have a two year head start and it would still be met with a resounding "meh."

yeah, you have a point there. Ps3 & 360 were two very different pieces of hardware. but I am still optimistic. new hardware is new hardware, and Xbox Prime isn't just a midgen refresh, it is the next gen console. I think it will help bring Xbox back.

What's does "next gen" even mean in today's market? Better graphical fidelity for the all the unfinished triple A stuff that gets crapped out to stores these days? More remasters of previous generation games? There hasn't been hardware driven game design advancement in like 20 years. The crazy thing is the Xbox could dominate the hardware market right now by making even half the IP they own right now exclusive to their platform.

When I say "next gen", I literally just mean the successors for current gen consoles. So right now, "next gen" refers to Ps6 and Xbox Prime.

That is definitely a major problem, but we've had some great games, even masterpieces release in this generation, too.

100% agree with you here. the constant rereleases (both remasters & remakes) have been really annoying, and they're getting more and more annoying with each new generation because it seems like we just keep getting more of them when they don't seem necessary, relatively speaking.

Not sure what you mean by this now. A lot of Ps3's exclusive games had to be developed distinctively since the hardware was so different from most other tech back then. and a lot of the devs even said that their games wouldn't even possibly run on the 360. and the Ps3 released less than 20 years ago.

I agree with you there too, but as you know, I am of the belief that half of the IP they own shouldn't belong them in the first place.

What I mean by that is there hasn't been anything developed in the last 20 years that wouldn't be possible on other hardware from a gameplay perspective. Sure MGS4 pushed the ps3 to its graphical limits but the core gameplay experience could have been done elsewhere. Games just have larger polygon counts and higher texture resolution but core gameplay design peaked in the early 2000s.
