Xbox Xbox Series X|S Thread

Once the new consoles have launched, I really hope team Xbox restarts their BC program to add more 360 and OG Xbox titles to BC.

ideally, they should aim to get every Xbox game, across all gens, playable via BC, barring licensing issues and obvious restrictions like Kinect requirements.

Every campaign game for sure. I don’t think they’ll bother with old sports games and the like.
 
And now for the bad news. The price for the 1TB SSD expansion card may have leaked at $220! Ouch!

If this is true, then I am going to hold off on getting that until I absolutely have to. Will need to be more mindful about my storage management and keep only the current Series X games I am playing on the internal ssd, with all other games stored on my external hdd.

That’s probably the downside of this super-fast SSD push next gen. It’s going to be expensive.
 
Since it's proprietary there's surely some "special tax" that bumps the price too...

To be honest, I'm more concerned about the brand than the price. :o
 
y'know, the $220 1TB expansion card may be a bigger factor for the $300 Series S, which is all digital but only has 500gb ssd. If you add $220 for the expansion card, now you are at $500 in cost. At that price, you could have just bought the more powerful Series X which has a disc drive and 1tb ssd.
 
Well I’m excited, hadn’t planned on moving into the next gen for probably a few years just due to budget priorities, but wound up winning a drawing at work for a series x they’ll be pre-ordering. They had one for the series x and one for ps5. Would have been excited for the ps5 short term since my little guy is big into spidey right now and we don’t own any PlayStation stuff, but long term I’m glad to be getting the x since I’ve always been an Xbox guy and I just prepaid a bunch game pass time recently anyway.

I’m guessing many of the guys who go for the SS won’t be as hardcore and can make do with using a regular, much cheaper hard drive rather than a SSD.

true. but with the size of games getting larger, those digital files will fill up fast. Though, with smart delivery, hopefully that will be more manageable and let us download just the stuff we need. For example, I rarely play multiplayer stuff, so if I can just skip that and download the single player campaign part, that would save me space.

another thing to keep in mind is that next gen only games are required to run on the internal ssd. So, as we get further into next gen, and buy more next gen only titles, that is going to use more of that internal drive. Then, that 500gb drive won't look so big, especially when you consider you already lose about 100gb just to the OS.

Is there any benefit to having a massive regular hard drive then if they have to run off the internal SSD? I guess it’s quicker to transfer from hard drive to SSD than it it is to reinstall/download a game again?

yes, ecosystem is an important factor when it comes to deciding which console to go with.

I'd say I am invested in both ecosystems, so I can go either way. With maybe a slight edge to Xbox now.

I have been with Playstation longer since PS1. However, I don't have any of my old PS consoles or old PS games to play. And with BC less robust on the PS5 it seems (unless there is a surprise announcement of full BC), I have less incentive to keep a library of pre-PS4 games. There is also nothing outside of the Playstation console to keep me invested in the PS ecosystem.

On Xbox, I have accumulated quite a collection of digital games over the years, including some major AAA titles. Plus, there is Game Pass. Xbox also offers broader BC, and I do have a few 360 games in my library, with others I'd like to play. So, I have more incentive to keep and play older Xbox titles.

Xbox is also tied to a broader MS ecosystem with Windows and PC, which I am already plugged into by using Windows laptops. And, since Xbox lets you use your own custom gamerpic, I can use the same "visual identity" across platforms and devices, like a Superman related pic. That may seem like a small thing, but to me it means something.

I'm also invested into my Xbox achievements more than my Playstation trophies. And while I have hype friends on both my Xbox and Playstation friends lists, over the years it seems like I have more interaction with my hype friends on the Xbox side of things.

I was put off by the last show. But, now that I've cooled off, over the last few weeks, I have been leaning back towards Xbox again. My disappointment and frustration with the last show (and last few years) stems from the fact that I want Xbox to do better and I know they are capable of so much more.

When I evaluate my gaming habits and taste, I realize it has definitely shifted towards more of a casual player. I just don't play very much anymore, and when I do, it's for quick, pick up and play sessions.

I say that I am interested in big titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Persona, Spider-Man, God of War, etc. But honestly, I really don't have the time to play all those games. I'll rush out to buy them, but they'll just end up sitting on my shelf, collecting dust, and adding to my backlog.

And I say I'm interested in anime-based games or the JRPGs and niche JDev fighters on Playstation, but honestly, I find it harder to get into anime-based stuff as I am getting older. I'm more interested in Western RPGs and games where you can create your own characters. And on that front, Xbox has the chance to become a Western RPG powerhouse with Obsidian, ineXile, and Playground's RPG division. In the long run, I'd say I am more interested in Avowed and Fable than I am in Miles Morales, Ratchet, or Horizon II. And Dragon Age especially, even though that's not Xbox exclusive. But I find myself more excited for the next Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Elder Scrolls than I do for the next Final Fantasy.

I also can't dismiss the awesome value that Game Pass gives nor the more powerful specs of the Series X compared to the PS5.

I am waiting on the price for the PS5 and for Sony to clarify a few things about it (like BC) before making my final decision. So, I hope Sony makes their move soon, because I'd like to know before September 22.....haha!

yes. having a massive external hdd would be beneficial to store the games long terms. and the bigger the drive, the more games you can store (obviously!) including next gen games.

For inactive next gen games, you can keep them stored on your external hdd, and just keep your active games on the internal ssd.
