I posted this days ago in the gaming lounge thread but it doesn't seem to be active often and so I'll just make a thread.

When it comes to creating/customizing characters in games, do you create yourself or just what ever cones to mind?

I'm curious because I usually create myself or a badass/cool latino looking guy and sometimes I go non human, depending on the game and amount of character slots. I also make characters that fit in that game's world like in Elder Scrolls Online as classes and races are specific

I never create myself ( that would be too boring.....lol ).

I usually name and base my characters on ( take inspiration from ) superheroes or other fictional characters, but I try to make them fit in the particular game world. If given the choice of playing other races, like elf, I will often go for that. But usually whatever is easiest to make "pretty" characters.

On the subject of pretty characters, I almost always create female characters, even though I'm a guy. The exception would be wrestling games, where I almost always create male characters.

I never create myself. At most, I take a tiny bit of inspiration from me or anyone else I know. But unless I'm making a comic character or what have you, I ALWAYS go for random made up characters.

That's cool. I've been inspired for characters in certain games. I even used to create comic/film and game characters in wrestling games.

I'm one of those weirdos who spend way too much time in the character creation menu. My custom characters are, for reasons that I'm sure a psychologist would find interesting, always female (I'm not), and they're never based on pre-existing characters.

hey, you're not weird at all. I'm the same. I often spend more time in character creation than I do in the actual game. A lot of that is due to starting the game with a character, restarting to fix/tweak something, starting again, then restarting to tweak, etc.

in fact, by the time I'm done with character creation and getting my character just right, the next game in the series is usually out. :o

I can understand getting so involved and wrapped up in creation modes when you can customize at any time and there's tons of options plus updates with more additions. WWE games are creation heaven and you can even download/upload to a community server and customize those!

I get playing female characters like Laura Croft in Tomb Raider where she's the awesome star of her own franchise or playing as women for some matches in fighting and wrestling games but I've never gotten the appeal of dudes playing as girls most of the time and especially creating them. It make me cringe when I see badass yet beautiful and sexy girls in sexy outfits and you know they're most likely guys in real life!

I won't call you weirdo or anything but it's just not my style

oh, I totally get you.

for me, a main reason is because if I'm going to be spending hours and hours staring at a character on screen, I'd rather stare at a hot/cute chick instead of a guy..........lol.

but I do agree about the disconnect between seeing a hot female character in game and knowing ( or finding out ) the character is actually a guy gamer in real life. Reminds me of the beginning in Sword Art Online anime when all of the character appearances are "reset" to look like the real life players, and some of those cute girl characters are actually not-so-attractive guys in real life.....haha.

but I think that comes into play more with online/MMORPG type games. in that type of game, I may be more inclined to play as or create a male character, since my character will be "public" so to speak. but for a self contained single player story, where I'm the only one who will see my created character, I'll create whatever or whoever I want.

on the subject of created characters, for games that include a choice/morality system, how do you guys play your created characters?

Does your character's personality/choices tend to mirror your own? Or do you play against your real life nature?

For me, I find it very hard to play as a complete d*** or outright bad person, because that goes against my real life nature. I try to be respectful, polite, and helpful to everyone in real life, and my created game characters tend to reflect that. Which could explain why my characters have a hard time refusing all those fetch quests from NPCs. lol

I usually try to play as a hero unless it means missing out on important stuff (questlines, unique items etc.)

Well, for what is worth my female characters are not conventionally beautiful and sexy... they're usually as big and burly as the game allows me to create them. Not sure if that makes it any less weird. :hehe:

Gamer(movie with Gerald Butler)made the idea of playing as girls worse for me and am sometimes reminded of that . Around that time, I would play in PlayStation Home

I'll play a hero and villain if there's an option to play as both's point of view but usually I try being heroic or an anti-hero and not full on bad. Even in open world games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, I try my best to avoid hurting civilians when in free roam.

I often play as female characters. I’m always looking for a different experience to what I’m used to so in Elder Scrolls my main character is usually Argonian or Khajit. In a sci-fi I’ll go for the alien, cyborg or undead space pirate over regular human warrior race.

In DC Universe Online, my main character is earth powered and he looks like Thing from Fantastic Four. In Elder Scrolls Online, I have characters from each race and my two main characters are a Nord and an Orc. So that's a good balance of human and non-human

When it comes to humans , I like them male and buffed up. From athletic & fit to powerful brutes. My main wrestler is inspired by Bane in his original look without Venom. My pirate in Sea of Thieves looks like Bluto from Popeye The Sailor Man

Yeah i love getting lost in creating a character, telling a story due to the visual of the character and all.
I dont remember what game it was, but i started out with a pretty normal looking character.
But the farther i got, the more i decided to tell a story, a journey.
He got scars and different hair styles, beard changed etc...i was evolving the character through the journey just for myself and i loved it.

In the wwe games i love creating my own wrestler and giving him 10-20 different attires with different themes etc...i just like that.

I understand that...a part of it.
I sometimes like to play with a female character and all, its a nice change and all.

But yeah, it takes away a bit of this fantasy of the "sexy" female gamer that likes what you like and all that.
The idea that a guy is behind this ingame character and not this "fantasy" is a bit...i dont want to say strange...its just that you have this fantasy in your head.

It’s funny, when I was young I always wanted avatars that look like me because of course, why wouldn’t you want to see yourself as a superhero? These days though I choose a character a bit more fabulous

I hardly ever have a regular male human character. As that’s what I am I’m looking for role play rather than seeing myself as the character.

Making a bigger than life character, human or not is probably the best feeling during a creation mode. I create myself or someone that resembles me in most games but my favorite are definetly the badass beast of characters
