I enjoyed the hell out of this film. I thought it was brilliant and very funny. A definite dvd purchase for me. I saw it in a half packed screening and everyone else seemed to love it too.
McBride, for me, was the best and pulled it all together. I think the rest of the cast was good but in particular, if it didn't have McBride, I don't know if it would have been as funny/good. I enjoyed it more than Pineapple Express too (which I also enjoyed).
The directing was good. The action was good and the effects were very well done for a comedy, I thought. In particular, the giant hand snake looked quite fantastic. And I thought the modern/crude humour married quite well with the fantasy setting. I don't think it felt like a mish mash or as if the fantasy and comedy elements don't go together... It worked quite well imo. I saw it as a fantasy/quest movie that was just funny... I mean, it was all taken or done in a serious manner, if it had been done as a spoof or it felt like the actors weren't taking it seriously, then I don't think it would have worked as well. It knows what it wants to be and does it.
Hangover 2 and The Inbetweeners film will probably come in as my fave comedies of the year but... It was very enjoyable.
