Zero Time Dilemma participants announced [Update 2]

Published 18 hours ago. 200 comments.

Coming to PS Vita and 3DS this summer.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has the first Japanese preview and screenshots of Zero Time Dilemma, the latest entry in the Zero Escape series due out for PS Vita and 3DS in North America and Europe this summer (the Japanese release window is still to be announced).

The adventure game sees nine characters locked up in a basement nuclear bomb shelter, who must take part in a death game in order to escape. Character design is being handled by Rui Tomono.
The nine participants include:

  • Carlos (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita)
  • Akane (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro)
  • Junpei (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki)
  • Q (voiced by Aki Toyosaki)
  • Eric (voiced by Akira Ishida)
  • Mira (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto)
  • Diana (voiced by Mamiko Noto)
  • Phi (voiced by Chiaki Omigawa)
  • Sigma (voiced by Daisuke Ono)
  • ZE3_Fami-Scan_03-08-16_002.jpg
Furhter information has yet to leak. Famitsu has eight pages of coverage, including details on each character, the story, system introductions, and an interview with series director Kotaro Uchikoshi.
Thanks, Famitsu.
Update 9:25 a.m.: New tidbits from Famitsu’s interview with director Kotaro Uchikoshi have come out.
Why has “Extreme Escape” disappeared from the title?
“One reason is that we want to renew the image [of the series]. We want to bring the overseas name Zero Escape over without changing it.”
What’s the meaning of the subtitle? (In Japan, the game is called Zero Escape: Time Dilemma.)
“What is the right thing? The content of this game poses a problem like this to the player.
“In the game, there is an ‘Ultimate Choice’ that appears, which is not to be declared as the right choice.
“There are game-like elements where your choices affect the progress of the story, and the ending changes and such, but since the player will question what is right, we want you to think about which one is good and which one is evil, so we put ‘Dilemma‘ in the sub-title.”
As the final chapter, will all mysteries be resolved?
“All of the mysteries from the previous games will be solved. We’re making sure that the people who play it for the first time will also enjoy it.”
Are there any extreme scenes?
“The ‘Ultimate Choice’ is a thing where one’s life is put at risk. I want the player to be well-worried. Since we don’t want to soften up the presentation for the sake of age regulations, we’re putting out the presentation how I want it without changes. So the possibility that this is the first Z-rated game for 3DS is high. (Laughs.)”
What’s the reason for changing the character designer?
“I thought about asking Kinu Nishimura this time, but I wanted to give the impression that [this game] has changed significantly from the previous game. Also, since the production method went from backgrounds and characters drawn in standing poses to 3D cinematics, I wanted a more impressive design. I asked Rui Tomono this time, whose [work] was likely to be accepted without any resistance overseas while still having a typically Japan-like touch.”
Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

First look at Zero Time Dilemma

Published 13 hours ago. 71 comments.

First screenshots of Spike Chunsoft's escape room threequel.

Famitsu has gone up with a short online preview of Zero Time Dilemma following leaks from its magazine yesterday, providing the first direct-feed screenshots.

The game’s story sees nine men and women locked up in an underground nuclear shelter with the goal of escaping. The nine characters are split up into three teams of three, in three separate sections of the shelter. To return to the outside and above ground, six passwords are required, but a password each time a person dies.

In other words, escape is impossible unless at least six people die. Who will be sacrificed? Or is there another way. That choice is up to the player.

Zero Time Dilemma prologue and characters detailed; first trailer coming March 17

Published 3 hours ago. 18 comments.
Everything we know so far.

Zero-Time-Dilemma-Site-Open.jpg

Spike Chunsoft has opened the official Japanese website for Zero Time Dilemma, the third entry in the Zero Escape series due out for PS Vita and 3DS in North America and Europe this summer.

The website shares a slew of new information, including prologue and character information, as well as news that the first trailer will be released this Thursday, March 17.

Get the details below.
■ Prologue
December 31, 2028—Nevada desert.
It was six days since the start of cohabitation in the experimental facility Dcom.
That day, they woke up, and nine men and women were in confinement.
On my left wrist was a black bracelet I’d never seen before—a bangle.
Then a person wearing a mask showed up, and announced the start of the the Decision game.
“The survival of all of you, me, and the human race hangs on this game.”
After that, they were transported to an underground shelter, and divided and admitted into three sections—C, Q, and D.
Which team will survive?
The future of all humanity—all eight billion people—rests on their Decision.
■ About
This is an an adventure / escape game where a group of people locked up in a facility by a mysterious character known as “Zero” are forced into a death game.
The underground nuclear bomb shelter that is the setting of this story consists of three sections and a central elevator hall, with three people in each section for a total of nine people imprisoned. While it is necessary to get to the central elevator hall to escape above ground, the path to the elevator hall is locked behind six passwords (X Doors).
The passwords required to open each X Door are revealed for every one person that dies. Will you kill the other team to escape through gimmicks prepared in the facility, or will you seek another solution?
The choice is in the hands of the player.
■ Cinema Part
During “Cinema Part” event scenes, you’ll experience conversation scenes displayed through character acting and dialogue without the use of text windows. The characters are fully voiced to create a sense of reality similar to a movie or foreign drama.

■ Characters
Team C

  • Q (voiced by Aki Toyosaki) – A boy who lost his memory and knows not what kind of person he is. He wears a strange, spherical helmet for some reason. He is naive and kind.

  • Mira (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) – A woman who brings about a dubious charm. She doesn’t show too much emotion, but her reasoning seems to be that she’s “just insensitive.”
Team D

zeroescapechara3_160314_compressed_thumb.jpg

  • Sigma (voiced by Daisuke Ono) – His body is 22 years-old, but because he’s led a complicated and mysterious life, his mind is that of a 67 year-old man’s. Phi sometimes knocks him as an “old man.”
Other

  • Zero (voiced by ???) – The mastermind behind the Decision game. What are the expectations behind his plan?
  • Gabu – An old dog, male. He can pass through vents impassable by humans, and is the only character able to go to and from each section of the facility. The characters of the story attach cased messages to Gabu’s collar in attempts to communicate with the teams of the other sections…

Zero Time Dilemma Has A Neat Trick To Block Spoilers. March 17, 2016 . 12:30pm

Siliconera attended a presentation where director Kotaro Uchikoshi demoed the game,
and showed us an interesting way that Zero Time Dilemma tells its story.

ZTDKeyArt.jpgUpdated_thumb.jpg

The heart of Zero Time Dilemma and the entire Zero Escape series is the narrative. Siliconera attended a presentation where Kotaro Uchikoshi demoed the game. Warning spoilers ahead!

While other Zero Escape games were heavy on reading, Zero Time Dilemma is less of a visual novel and done in the Telltale’s adventure games. All of the event scenes are cinematic and Uchikoshi’s demo started with Sigma strapped in a chair with a revolver by his head. As seen in the above key art with Diana behind him, that’s the same scene from the demo. Phi is trapped in an incinerator and Zero asks the trio to play a gut wrenching game of Russian Roulette.

In three minutes, the incinerator will turn on and Phi will die. The door can only be opened by the sound of a revolver which means Diana would have to shoot Sigma. The revolver only has three bullets in it so there’s a chance Sigma could survive. Sigma pleads with Diana to pull the trigger. He says the choice is easy, if Diana doesn’t pull a trigger he will live, but there is 100% chance Phi will die. If she pulls the trigger there is a 100% chance Phi will live, but only a 50% chance he will die. Phi pleaded with Diana to not pull the trigger and consider her feelings as a survivor. After both sides state their case, you playing as Diana have 10 seconds to either shoot Sigma or not.

Before Uchikoshi made a choice he said he doesn’t even know what will happen next. Zero Time Dilemma has a random factor where you could see Sigma live or you could see him get shot. It’s possible to replay this scene a second or third time and still only see the same result.

Zero Time Dilemma’s story is presented in small episodes or fragments from different points in time. The Floating Fragment system menu shows a handful of episodes with a preview image and players pick which story fragment looks interesting. After you complete a fragment and see an event its point in the story is revealed in a flowchart, which is similar to the flowchart in Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward. You may start out seeing a scene where a character dies and won’t know what happened until you find a fragment before the event much later on.

You can also replay fragments and Zero Time Dilemmna gives players an option to fast forward through cinematics just in case you want to make a different choice.

You may have noticed the characters in Zero Time Dilemma are wearing bracelets again. These bracelets inject a drug into the nine unlucky Dilemma Game participants which erases their memories and this explains why the characters themselves don’t recall any events before the current fragment.

Zero Time Dilemma has escape the room puzzles too and these are touch based like Virtue’s Last Reward. Phi and Diana had to work together to escape a room in one scene. Players could switch between characters in this puzzle and each character had their own inventory.

We’ll have more about Zero Time Dilemma including an interview with director Kotaro Uchikoshi soon.

Zero Time Dilemma will release in North America and Europe in summer 2016 for PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS, and later for PC.

Zero Time Dilemma Director On Randomized Events, And How Graphic The Game Will Be. March 25, 2016 . 12:30pm

Siliconera caught up with Zero Time Dilemma director to talk about randomized events, philosophies behind its inspiration, how graphic the game will be, and more on the mysteries behind the series.

44 Thoughts Read >

We previously talked about Zero Time Dilemma’s neat trick to block spoilers, and in Siliconera’s interview with director Kotaro Uchikoshi, I got a chance to talk about much more, including the randomized events, philosophies behind its inspiration, how graphic the game will be, and more on the mysteries behind the series.

The idea of randomizing events in Zero Time Dilemma is interesting. Why did you add this in?
Kotaro Uchikoshi, Director: To kind of spoiler proof the game. If you go onto a FAQ site you’ll learn how to do this and that and beat the game. That’s not very interesting. I thought adding a random element would add a sense of surprise.

Also, a major theme of the game is coincidence and how small coincidences can lead to big changes. By making these random elements a part of gameplay marries the idea with the story’s theme.

Ah, I remember in the demo Zero was talking about how a snail crossing the road spiraled up to six billion deaths. You’ve read a lot of philosophies from Rupert Sheldrake’s morphic resonance and plenty of science fiction. What philosophies about coincidences have inspired you?
This is a real tough question. Thinking about this I might be going in a different direction than thinking about coincidences, but I read a lot of Buddhist philosophy books in particular there is this one Zen Buddhist idea “shiki soku zeku” which can be explained as matter is void and form is emptiness. In particular, the ideas of good and evil. There is no absolute good and no absolute evil. I wanted to touch upon those ideas in the game.

In an earlier interview with Siliconera we talked about Akane and it’s interesting to see how the theme of no absolute good or evil fits into your character design.
Going back to theme that there is no absolute good or evil, when I design characters I try to give them their own sense of personal justice that they believe to be true. Because you have characters with different philosophies they play off each other. They are kind of like character foils.

Another thing Siliconera brought up last time was the sense of fear and level of gore in 999 compared to Virtue’s Last Reward. While it was toned down in Virtue’s Last Reward to make the game more appealing in Japan, Zero Time Dilemma seems much more violent. Why did you go this direction?
[Laughs] I spoke with the producer, Iizuka-san, and since this is the third and final entry in the series we should do all of the things that we’ve always wanted too. We were holding back before, but this is a chance to do everything. Since the game revolves around making absolute decisions life and death hangs in the balance. If we were to pull our punches, it would take away a lot of the narrative impact. By making the violence more extreme it makes the choices hit home.

How graphic does the game get? In 999 a lot of the details are written so your mind fills in the gaps, but since Zero Time Dilemma is cinematic how far did you push the limits?
I can’t go into too much detail since that would spoil the fun. I’ll leave that to your imagination! In terms of the level of violence originally we were going for a CERO D rating which is 17 and over. We realized that with those restrictions we wouldn’t get the same visual and emotional impact we wanted so at the end of the day we went with a CERO Z rating, which is the highest rating in Japan.

Can you tell us more about Zero’s new design and his plague mask?
Zero has always been a masked character. In the past, he’s worn a gas mask. This time he has a plague doctor mask from the Middle Ages where they had a long nose so you wouldn’t contact the Black Death. Since the story involves a mysterious virus I thought having him with the plague doctor motif would be appropriate.

This is probably in spoiler territory, but in Virtue’s Last Reward Junpei says he hasn’t seen Akane in a long time, but in Zero Time Dilemma both characters meet again and they’re on the same team.
Yeah, you guessed it this is a spoiler. [Laughs] It may appear this contradicts the previous game, but if you play this you’ll find a plausible explanation.

Are you going to address mysteries from 999 like All-Ice?
Zero Time Dilemma promises to solve all of the mysteries from Virtue’s Last Reward, but that doesn’t mean it will solve all of the mysteries from 999.

Now that Zero Escape series is coming to an end, what do you as a creator want to do next?
With Zero Time Dilemma we changed to a more cinematic method of storytelling and the honest reason is people don’t like reading. Cinematics are much more direct and it’s much easier to keep people invested in a story. While adventure game genre has a lot going for it, it also has a high barrier of entry. Hopefully, I can continue making adventure games with a more cinematic bent. We made this new engine for Zero Time Dilemma and I would like to use this engine to create further cinematic stories in the future.

Zero Time Dilemma will release in North America and Europe in summer 2016 for PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. The game is headed to PC later via Steam.

Zero Time Dilemma details text skipping

Published 6 hours ago. 10 comments.

Aksys recommends not using Skip Text on first playthrough.

ZTD-Skip-Text_04-27-16.jpg

Aksys Games has posted a blog about cinema sections and skipping text in Zero Time Dilemma.

Text boxes are gone from the story. They’re replaced with cutscenes with optional subtitles. The subtitles appear exactly as subtitles do, they don’t type out. You can skip text, but there important things to know about how it works.

Skipping previous “read” text is done automatically, like in Virtue’s Last Reward, but now you can also turn on “Skip Text” for new lines as well. The little arrow shown at the bottom right of screenshots is the notification that skipping texting is possible. Skip Text is only for cinema sections. The text in Quest portions and choices for the Decision Game require user input to progress.

Because the story plays out in cutscenes rather than text boxes, the skip function is tied to camera movement instead of individual lines. Pressing the skip button once will jump ahead to the next camera move, not necessarily the next line. Skip Text will not make the subtitles appear faster as they are tied to the animation and voice.

Aksys recommends not using Skip Text on new lines for your first playthrough of Zero Time Dilemma as it’s possible to miss important information and cinema scenes cannot rewind. All of the lines of dialogue are recorded in the Log, however, so you’ll be able to check them, but if you miss them, you missed the real time experience. Previously read text can still be skipped even with Skip Text turned off.

Zero Time Dilemma is due out for PS Vita and 3DS on June 28 in North America and Europe, and June 30 in Japan. A PC version is also planned.

Beginning The Decision Game In Zero Time Dilemma. June 24, 2016 . 9:30pm

Zero Time Dilemma’s non-linear approach to storytelling becomes quite evident early on and though this disjointed approach might come across as a bit jarring and disorienting for some, I thought it helped to add even more sense of mystery to the plot.
22 comments Read >

I really enjoy and appreciate a good puzzle game. There’s nothing quite like being presented with a conundrum and then slowly but surely uncovering all the pieces needed and fitting them in place to bring about the solution. So naturally I jumped at the chance to try out Zero Time Dilemma, the third and final entry in the Zero Escape series. The game is presented like a visual novel, but the bulk of the gameplay is in the puzzles that the players must solve in order to escape various situations in which they find themselves trapped in locked rooms.

The first thing I noticed about Zero Time Dilemma was how desolate and creepy its atmosphere was. I am by no means a fan of the horror genre, but I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the game and the “Saw” movie franchise. The premises are, at face value, incredibly similar. A group of people discover that they are trapped in a remote location, at the mercy of some strange, enigmatic figure who promises them their freedom so long as they partake in his decision game.

In the beginning, however, the game starts off a bit slow. There is a lot of dialogue before you actually get to the first puzzle challenge. Nonetheless, this all has its place to set up the atmosphere and really drive home the severity of the predicament the cast of characters have found themselves in.

As I progressed into the early chapters of the game, Zero Time Dilemma’s non-linear approach to storytelling became quite evident. The game doesn’t follow a set advancement through its plot points. A small assortment of chapters are available to each of the three teams at the beginning, and you can start from whichever of the points that is available to you, no matter where they fall in the timeline. This non-linearity is supported by the fact that, every ninety minutes, the characters are put into an induced sleep and their memories wiped clean, leaving them with no recollection of the previous events with each awakening. This disjointed approach might come across as a bit jarring and disorienting to some, but I thought it helped to add even more sense of mystery to the plot.

The fact that the three teams are isolated from each other further enhances this sensation. As you progress with one team, you never know how the others are faring, or even if they are still alive, until each period of ninety minutes is up.

While the beginning of Zero Time Dilemma starts off a bit slow and incoherent at times, it really picks up once you progress and the puzzle-solving and decision-making aspects are fully introduced.

Zero Time Dilemma will release for the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS in North America and Europe on June 28th, and in Japan on June 30th. The PC version for Windows will release worldwide on June 30th.

However, to compensate for the delay, Aksys has announced that there will be “a bonus for the bonus being late.”

Who is “?” In Zero Escape? Series Creator Shares Some Answers . August 13, 2016 . 7:16pm

On Twitter, Kotaro Uchikoshi talks about the identity of “?”, “Another Time End”, and his latest work on Zero Time Dilemma.

47 comments Read >

Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi has recently answered some questions on Twitter relating to the identity of “?” and the ending of Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward. He also touches on the recently released Zero Time Dilemma.

The conversation began when a Twitter user openly asked Uchikoshi about the identity of “?”. He responded by saying it was necessary to clarify some things about Kyle and “Another Time End”. Apparently, the ending was written as a bonus, and it was not intended to be taken as canon.

Uchikoshi explains in his tweets, which have been collected and quoted as follows, “First of all, it seems necessary to clear up the misunderstanding about Kyle and ‘?’. So-called ‘? END/Another Time End’ was added as anomalistic irregular bonus. That was a kind of ‘afterword’ written in a conversational format. In that scenario there was no meaning to supplement main story. That was a story in higher realities/dimensions and metafiction. That is not connected to main story time-sequentially. Therefore that is not canon.”

The explanation may lead some fans to wonder what the canon ending of Virtue’s Last Reward truly is. Uchikoshi confirms, “Main story of VLR ends in the hiding place of Crash Keys on April 13 in 2029. When young Sigma saw the explosion through the window. That’s the ending as canon of VLR.”

The reason for the added ending was due to the Tohoku earthquake that occurred in 2011. As Uchikoshi recalls, “When we were recording the voices of VLR, a big earthquake (2011 Tohoku earthquake) occurred in Japan. Nearly 20,000 people died due to that disaster. We saw the horrible devastation and thought this. ‘I wonder if the ending of VLR should keep it this way. Isn’t it necessary to add a story which gives dream and hope to people?’ As a result ‘Another Time End’ was added.”

“I think I made two mistakes in VLR. 1: I added the voices in ‘Another Time End’ in the international version. 2: In the flowchart, I put ‘Another Time End’ on the place after/below Phi End. For these reasons, many players misunderstood as if ‘Another Time End’ is canon. I really regret that.”

However, just because “Another Time End” is not canon does not mean the story holds no meaning in the series. Uchikoshi continues his explanation with a caveat that his theory is on equal footing with those of the fans due to their support of the series. “Was ‘Another Time End’ all nonsense? Was it meaningless? Of course that’s not true. I’ll explain. (However what I write from now is not necessarily the correct answer. Id like you to interpret this as one of the tentative theory. Because Zero Escape series has already been out of my hands, and now it’s owned by the players. If there is a theory that makes more feasible or convincing than mine, you can adopt it as your canon.)”

“It goes without saying that what is the identity of ‘?’. It’s as many players are presuming. At least, I wrote ‘Another Time End’ in VLR with the intention of it. Also there is no doubt that ‘?’ intervened in ZTD. In order to imply that, the ability of Mind Hack by Delta was set to resemble the things that ‘?’ can do. You can choose one you like from the following 3 theories. The character did it or Delta did it or ‘?’ did it. The choice is yours.”

How does all of this relate to the story in Zero Time Dilemma? Uchikoshi explains his perspective when writing the narrative of the game. “When creating ZTD, I wasn’t based on ‘Another Time End’. Because not every players of VLR saw ‘Another Time End’. There are a lot of players who didn’t get all Gold Files. I wanted to make ZTD so that even they can enjoy the story.”

Bringing the discussion full circle, he concludes by delivering his thoughts on Kyle. “In passing, I’d tell you about Kyle. I said that ‘Another Time End’ was metafiction. Therefore I’d like you to interpret Old Akane’s words in ‘Another Time End’ as metafiction. This means that she was talking toward the player in this REAL WORLD. She said ‘He (Kyle) has arrived at December 25th, 2028.’ And now is 2016. This year isn’t 2028. This is my plan.”

“I’m often asked like ‘Where is Kyle?’ The short answer is this. ‘He will be in 2028.’ I hope this is useful for you. Thank you!”

Aksys Games and Spike Chunsoft have announced Zero Escape: The Nonary Games, a double pack including Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PS Vita and launching both physically and digitally in spring 2017 in North America and Europe.
999 has been rebuilt from the ground up and now features high-definition graphics in addition to English and Japanese voice acting.
Here’s an overview of the double pack, via Aksys Games:
So what exactly is a Nonary Game? In essence, the game contains nine “players” or participants. You assume the role of one of these participants and compete towards a common goal. “No big deal, I love a good, friendly competition!” you say to yourself. Well, not so fast… The rules of each game vary from title to title, but the end goal is always the same: you must fight for survival and do everything in your power to escape with your life! That’s right, the price for losing this game is death. Did we mention that you’ve been “entered” against your will?
The main antagonist in both games is the enigmatic Zero. Who is Zero? What does Zero want? Why are you in this situation to begin with? Fair questions to be sure, but to answer any of these would simply ruin the experience! A special feature of each Nonary Game is the implementation of a watch-like device, which is attached to each participant’s wrist. Unique to each game, the watch serves a few sinister functions, most notably as the very probable agent of your demise! Needless to say, your quest will focus on solving the mystery of your surroundings and successfully removing the lethal time piece.
The Zero Escape franchise is renowned for its engrossing narrative and complex story, and The Nonary Games collection serves as the definitive version of the first two games. For both the uninitiated and seasoned escapists, The Nonary Games is the perfect gateway into this deadly and thought-provoking world.

A Spoiler Filled Interview With Zero Time Dilemma’s Director. November 25, 2016 . 1:35pm

Siliconera spoke with Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi for a Zero Time Dilemma debriefing.

Siliconera spoke with Zero Escape series creator Kotaro Uchikoshi for a Zero Time Dilemma debriefing.

This interview contains heavy spoilers, if you have not finished playing the game you might want to skip this for now.

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

OK, on to the interview.

Akane is quite different from her appearance in Virtue’s Last Reward where she was almost Machiavellian. Why did you select her June personality 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors from in Zero Time Dilemma?

Kotaro Uchikoshi, Director: Personally, I think she always had a strong Machiavellian persona throughout the entire series. Although it wasn’t done by her own hand, In 999 she facilitated the deaths of Kubota, Nijisaki, and Musashidou to get revenge against Hongou and to create a new timeline where she didn’t die in the incinerator. In ZTD, she destroyed the nuclear reactor to SHIFT herself into a different timeline and didn’t hesitate when taking Junpei’s memory to execute Project AB in the Apocalypse End.

As you can see, she will do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals.

When VLR takes place 45 years later, she has surpassed being "human." Countless SHIFTs allowed her to gain a few hundred to a few thousand years of life experience. She’s basically a philosopher who reached the stage of nirvana. I think this background helped her in becoming more Machiavellian in VLR.

What do you think post-marriage life is like for Akane and Junpei?

They might argue over things, but I think they’ll have a happy post-marriage life.

When we talked before you mentioned that all of the mysteries from Virtue’s Last Reward would be solved in Zero Time Dilemma, but who is ? from the Another Time ending in VLR? My guess was it was the player, but since there was the neat trick in Q’s route where you play as Delta could you shine some more light on the ? character mystery?

I feel the need to explain that there has been a misunderstanding before answering this question. "? END (Another Time End)" in VLR was an irregular bonus script, which is like a post script of a novel. It caused confusion because it progressed in the format of a conversation. It wasn’t made as a follow up for the main script. It’s actually metafiction written through the viewpoint of higher realities/dimensions, and has no connection to the chronology of the official storyline. The official story of VLR ended with young Sigma witnessing the explosion of the antimatter reactors from the Crash Keys base on April 13, 2029.

But the tragic 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which claimed 20,000 lives, occurred during voice recording, and we began to wonder “was it appropriate to end the story of VLR like this? Should we add a scenario which brought more hope?” This brought about the addition of "Another Time End." The Japanese version didn’t include voices in this scene because the script was written after the completion of voice recording. However, during the process of adding this scene, I made two regrettable errors which caused even more confusion. The first was adding voices to the English version “Another Time End.” The second was putting the “Another Time End” right below “Phi End” on the flowchart. I did not incorporate what happened in that ending when working on ZTD. The reason behind that was because there was no assurance that everybody saw this ending. Some players only finished the escape rooms on easy mode. I wanted to be sure that they too would enjoy the story of ZTD.

People will probably wonder if what happened in “Another Time End” was all fake and whether I was deceiving the players. This is far from the truth. You said “My guess was it was the player” and that is correct. I wrote the script for this part with “?” being the player, and put some fragment of the player’s involvement in ZTD. This is the reason I made it appear that the player is capable of using an ability similar to Delta’s mind hack. But please don’t consider this to be the ultimate answer. The reason I don’t want everyone to see this as the only answer is because I’ve come across a number of interesting theories in forums which I do not want to deny. Maybe the character who was making the decisions in the Decision Game was the one who was participating in the game, or perhaps it’s Delta, or even the player. There are many ways of interpreting it, and I hope each fan will decide which fits best for them personally.

I’d also like to discuss Kyle. As mentioned before, “Another Time End” is metafiction, meaning the comment made by old Akane where she is speaking to the player himself is also metafiction. During this scene she said, “He (Kyle) was thrown out when you entered. Right now – in a manner of speaking – he has arrived at December 25th, 2028. His consciousness has gone into a body from that time." The year we are currently in is 2016 and not 2028. That’s my answer towards Kyle.

Is this a connection to Ever 17’s ? Character?

There is no connection as Ever17 and the Zero Escape series are completely different series. It might be an interesting theme for the imaginative person in the future who’s crazy enough to conduct research on my work. But there is no need to play Ever17 to understand Zero Escape. They’re basically 2 separate portraits drawn on different canvases. It’s the fans’ and players’ prerogative to find any similarities between these series, but I would prefer they wait until I have died.

The Delta twist was cool. How did you plan the story to foreshadow this twist?

The main twist was already planned beforehand, once we decided to go with the 3rd person (cinematic) style of gameplay, since the theme of the trick in the Zero Escape series is the perspective.

Also, one thing I noticed in ZTD is if Q-Team is killed off there are more situations where chance affects story branches. Was this part of Delta’s scheming, to force other characters to SHIFT and affect the time line?

The answer for this question is yes and no. Since Delta was a mind hacker and not a SHIFTer, he was able to know the histories and alternative time lines by looking through the mind of SHIFTers. So the tree diagram of the time lines in ZTD already existed, and he simply followed the diagram. That’s leads to the questions of "Who then created the diagram?" which is a complicated subject and also a paradox.

Speaking of Delta, while he prevented a nuclear war catastrophe, he also directly caused a number of alternate, equally terrible futures. What can you tell us about the future if Delta didn’t act and cause all of these events? What would have happened that would be worse than the Radical-6 outbreak?

If Delta hadn’t taken action, 8 billion people would have lost their lives. Of course this is what he claims… We didn’t put any visuals of human extinction in ZTD. This was intentional, as we only wanted to show the events that took place inside the shelter. Was Delta’s comment about human extinction true? Or was he just lying? He’s not a SHIFTer and the only thing he did was look inside their minds. Was the scene witnessed during the mind hacking true? I hope fans can make interesting observations and theories about this.

What would your first choice be for the "final decision"? Would you SHIFT or not?

I think I would. However, this would mean that there’s a possibility that my life can suddenly be taken over by myself in a different timeline. If I thought about making the SHIFT, this would mean that my alternative timeline self will also decide to SHIFT as well. Imagine a different timeline where humankind is facing extinction and a machine that allowed people to SHIFT was created. This could mean they might take over their bodies in this timeline. Taking that into consideration, SHIFTing can potentially be something really terrifying.

While the March 24 release date applies to both the physical and digital releases in North America, Aksys was only able to confirm it for the digital release in Europe. A physical release is planned for Europe, however, and while Aksys is aiming to launch it alongside the digital release, the company was unable to confirm the release date at this time.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games is a collection including a remastered Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward.

Here’s a brief overview:
Kidnapped and taken to an unfamiliar location, nine people find themselves forced to participate in a diabolical Nonary Game by an enigmatic mastermind called Zero. Why were they there? Why were they chosen to put their lives on the line as part of a dangerous life and death game? Who can be trusted? Tensions rise as the situation becomes more and more dire, and the nine strangers must figure out how to escape before they wind up dead.

  • Two spine-tingling Nonary Games – Zero welcomes you to take part in both the Nonary Game and the Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition as the award-winning escape-the-room visual novels Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) and its sequel, Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR), are together for the first time.
  • A remastered and revamped Nine Hours – The well-received classic Nintendo DS game 999 has been updated with hi-res graphics and a variety of new features including both Japanese and English voice acting!
  • Seek a way out – Search for clues within numerous locked rooms and solve mind-bending puzzles in order to escape. VLR even has two difficulty settings for more of a challenge.
  • Fascinating theories and pseudo science ideas abound along the twisting, turning journey to uncover who Zero is, why everyone was kidnapped, and the shocking connection between the Nonary Games.
