Starting in 2009, after over a year hiatus, Contest of Marvels will be starting up again!!!! This is the discussion thread, where JewishHobbit, Ahura Mazda, Wiegeabo, and I will be sorting out which characters will be included for the third season. Input is allowed and will glady be taken for those who wish to get involved. The overall decisions will be decided bly the four of us.

You have tons of time, Ahura. First off is determining our new roster. We'll be discussing Hulks further down the road; but, I think there is already talk about Rulk. My only wish this season is to have our characters be well defined, and not just appear in one or two issues. I think last time, it took us about three or four weeks coming up with our list, laying down the rules, and getting our participants.

I can't see anyone really wanting Puck. With Vindicator and Guardian, they closely resemble the other Guardian. Of course, which Guardian we want is the question. How much info do we really have or understand about the new one?

You know, everytime I look into Alpha Flight they seem interesting. I should probably hunt down the original run sometime... or at least Downlaod them before paying for it all.

I'm thinking that WWH would be the best option to use as well, but we'll discuss that when he comes up. Have to keep it orderly as possible. And I'm still iffy on Rulk. He's cool, but his powerlevels are all over the place. Punching out the Watcher? Using Thor's Hammer? Not typically feats within the realm of possibility. He'd be cool to include, but I'm forseeing some heated debates regarding him. Again... we'll see when the time comes. I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the Warbound included. I only read them in WWH, but I liked what I saw.

Some of the Alpha Flight characters I dropped without much thought, simply because they had little or no information in all the recent Handbooks that have come out since 2004. That doesn't mean there might not be something in older editions.

I think we'll have a nice selection of potential...mainly because I can imagine we are going to have quite a few characters we'll want in this season, and I can already easily see me have twenty Alpha Flighters. (One reason I don't want every version of the Hulk in the contest. So many characters, so few roster spots, ya know?)

BTW, I see you didn't include the newest Guardian in your list. Would you rather have the older, more established version? Not to mention, there are about three versions of James Hudson.

If you look closely... I changed his name. In the newer Marvel Comics Presents series, he had a solo adventure and he was called "Weapon Omega". So "Weapon Omega (Michael Pointer)" is the newest Guardian. I just updated his code name. That way there's not two Guardians.

Also, I just went around and PM'd a bunch of previous participants to let them know we're getting the band back together, as we as a few who haven't ever played but I think would be interested and good. I mostly hit the Marvel forums for those. I'm hoping a lot of the RPG people will find their ways in here since we're in their home turf.

Man... I'm too eager. I'm already thinking about the Avengers list. As well as things like the Cosmic Characters from Annihilation Conquest/Guardians of the Galaxy/etc. I've also now read all of Death's Head II's comics between season 2 and now and really hope to get him on my draft list.

I could dedicate some time to this for sure, sounds fun. I vote against including Rulk (he's done things, as you said, out of the realm of possibility).

Also, why was Sentry not included? unless I missed him on the list.

I strongly STRONGLY vote for him to be included (he's been avenger for like 4 years or something).

Also, how are winners decided? For example, if it came to SS versus BP can BP's player simply state that BP has defeated SS before on panel and the argument's over or can someone point out that that particularly story was poorly written and inconsistent with established levels?

Also, how the heck is Thanos not on the list? He fits into the cosmic section obviously. If Adam Warlock is included so should Thanos be.

And so should Silver Surfer now that I think about it (I don't think I saw him there either did I?)

Thanos was actually the winner of Season 1 by sheer power alone. After that we decided to give more characters a chance and omit anyone we felt was too uber poweful. What's the fun of having a character so powerful that he won't be challenged until the final 4? This way, it's challenging from round 1 and you don't really know who's going to win in the end until the final match is over. I believe that THAT is also why Sentry was removed, as well as some others. Too uber is too uber for this tournament.

As for the matches... in your example... the owner of BP would debate why the Silver Surfer wouldn't win THIS TIME! It's been shown that SS could beat him, but then the owner of BP could debate that in the last fight between then BP got some armor that allowed him to go toe to toe with SS, and now he'll have even more experience and he's been shown using something in his own book that could be benefial to this new battle against SS.

And the debate goes back and forth. If character A has beaten character B a hundred times... doesn't matter. If the owner of character B can convince a majority of the voters that he can win THIS match... then he'll win and move on and character A will be eliminated from the tournament. Also a factor... each week (and I believe there's 12 matches per week starting out) is in a differant location. Black Panther Vs Silver Surver in Shi'ar airspace will give SS an advantage... but BP vs SS in Wakanda will give BP a HUGE advantage. Locations are random draw as well... so you never know. And that's all the fun of the debate.

Trust me... you'll see some major upsets here. Some of these guys are amazing debaters. In season 1 I had Nico Minoru from Runaways... a little nobody, and I took her to the 3rd or 4th round because I barely convinced the majority vote that she could beat Scorpion, Thunderstrike, and I think someone else. It took the stinkin High Evolutionary to beat her... and I think he just barely beat her.

Also in season 1... Hulk, Thor, and Spider-Man were all eliminated in round 1.

Anything can happen in this game, and that's the fun of it.

I am against Sentry being included especially if Rulk is. They are essentially similar type characters with feats all over the board. One issue he is reigning supreme and the next he loses his fights.

I cannot add anything on the Alpha Flight as I have not read a single issue.

One thing regarding the exiles section, I would add Gambit (he is a namor/sue storm/gambit combo).

By the way, JH I hope your book makes it. I am rooting for you as little as that is worth .

Hey guys, great to see this game back and in full force.

As for me, I'm seriously thinking about joining up and participating if only so I can get in some epic debates with Ahura again (this time Vertigo WILL take down Kurse!)

The only thing I'm hesitant about right now is the time commitment. If we start in a month, I'll still have a few more months over here in Afghanistan where the internet sucks something fierce and my hours can get insane pretty easily.

As for right now, count me in tentatively. I'll let you guys know in a week or so if I'm definately in or not. Either way I'm definately going to keep on participating by voting and talking trash to whomever loses. : )

Oh yeah, are you planning on keeping COM II final four guys in as well, or are you taking them out like you did with COM I?

I can't really comment on Alpha Flight. Like Ahura, I haven't read them (and barely remember them from the X-Men cartoon). So whatever JH and Phaed decide is fine with me.

We should also keep our rule that the characters who made the final four last season are excluded from this season. Of course, that means those who made it in season 1 are now eligible.

Unless you guys want to just exclude all character who ever made it to the final four. It would certainly keep the game fresh if we never knew who was going to make it to the end.

I'm okay with omiting the final 4. The deal with the 1st season final 4 (or at least most of them) was that they were too powerful. I know Thanos was one of them, and I think Dormammu was another. I'll have to look that up.
