🥇Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

Just saw Julien Alfred win the 100m. What a powerhouse!

Yeah I'd not heard of her until last night but after the semi I was sure she'd win as she looked laser focused and builds speed like a train, Sha'Carri Richardson really needs to work on her start.

Men's 100m final tonight, I still think Noah Lyles will win, he's not in top form but he's the experienced championship performer, used to the pressure.

The 4x400m mixed relay was great too. Femke Bol is something else.

She's amazing, one of my favorite current athletes to watch in track and field, looking forward to her big showdown with the equally amazing Sydney McLaughlin in the 400 hurdles.

Men's 100m semis were a good watch. A couple of contenders in each race. Should be getting a finishing time in the 9.70s at least in the final if they give their best.

Julien Alfred is an absolute powerhouse once she gets going.

Hopefully Sha'Carri Richardson can eventually sort out her start as you say - her and her coach really should have worked on it more by now as it was already a known weakness, and it'll be tough catching Alfred once she's in full flight.

Lyles is crazy at 200m but at least beatable at 100m. I think it's going to be a very difficult race for him and it could be one of the more competitive 100m finals of recent years with a lot of guys within a similar window.

McLaughlin is the big favourite but would be cool to see Femke push her to the line. I hope the Dutch 4x400m team is good so we can get to see her on a final leg again. If I was anyone outside Sydney I'd switch to the straight 400m. :D

Right, time for the big one!! Very excited! I meant to say earlier that it was a shame for Louie Hinchcliffe who gave his best but it's early for him. I think he'll feature in future 100m finals.

So Kishane Thompson is the favourite ahead of Lyles, Seville & Kerley. Let's see who holds their nerve and can bring their best. Bednarek, Tebogo, Lamont Jacobs aren't totally out of the running either.

9.78, so close!! Was it Lyles on the line?

Yes, confirmed Lyles wins another title coming back from outside the medals to win it on the line by a tiny margin!!

Lyles won by 5 thousandths of a second! Everyone finished between 9.79 - 9.91, that's as close as it gets for a full field. Those were the fastest ever times for positions 4th - 8th in an Olympic final.

That 200m finishing strength pulling Lyles through. Johnson was worried about Fred Kerley but not aware of Lyles catching up across the track.

She gets her head up so quickly and just drives.

Yeah, I'm surprised they've not sorted that out already, I know she got away with it at the last World Championships, but it's always going to be a weakness that can be exploited until it's rectified.

He's very strong favourite in the 200m and well on course to win the 3 gold medals he set out for, winning the 100m/200m double at the Olympics is the holy grail for sprinters.

Lol :D I seem to recall talk of Sydney switching to 400m a while back, it's crazy to be as great as Femke is and still be the underdog! It would be awesome if we got a 2nd showdown in the 4x400m relay final leg between them.

I thought that experience factor might come into play but I've never seen a finish that close! 😱

I'm looking forward to seeing her at future tournaments (only recently turned 23).

It could easily cost her titles and medals if they don't sort it out. There are others who will beat her in future finals with a poor start.

Yeah, I'd be very surprised if he didn't win the 200m. That's his main event where he's won the last 3 world championships so is fully experienced at getting that one over the line. Plus there is more room for error in the 200m and no-one is as fast as him in the closing phase, that also helped him just about make it through in the 100m. He'll be very confident of all 3 medals now as long as US don't drop the baton.

Sydney and Femke should both do the straight 400m as well as hurdles. Yeah, hope a relay final leg chase down is on the cards too.

You were right, it looked like inexperience on the part of Kishane Thompson at the end cost him. Such fine margins though that a number of these could have changed positions, great to see such a close 100m final. Even many of the great ones of the past weren't usually so close from 1st to 8th.

So, the US are leading the official medal ranking now. Congrats. Its impressive how competitive and successful USA and China are in so many disciplines. But some reddit users really boasting there now :woozy:

Germany on the other hand, will undercuts his medals drasticly. We had 37 medals in Tokyo, 42 in Rio. We have 12 currently :woozy:

How USA Basketball Structures their teams:

Men's 5X5- Let's have 12 NBA players on the team
Women's 5x5- Let's have 12 WNBA players on the team
Men's 3x3- Let's have Jimmer Fredette, Rick Berry's kid, a special education teacher and podcast producer as our team
Women's 3x3- Let's have a mix of WNBA, NCAA and 3x3.

To quote the Sesame Street song "one of these things is not like the other"

What a great way to end the swimming event with the US ladies redeem their male counterpart to win the 4×100m medley relay!

The chinese win the men's relay has left a little bad taste, but overall it was a good and fun final day of swimming event. (And the Japan team finished a respectable 5th place).

What a fun and thrilling races for the last 9 days of this event!
Congrats to team USA winning 8 golds and 28 medals overall (both are the most) in the swimming!

Now...for the last 7 days,...will focus more on Basketball, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Football, Athletics, and my new favorite sport, Water Polo😆 (I never knew Water Polo would be such fun, exciting, thrilling, and also adorable to watch haha)

Wish I wasn’t so busy right now. I missed pretty much all the swimming except that one Adam Peaty race. I love watching Olympic swimming, oh well guess in another 4 year’s time. Or might catch replays as I don’t know results - shame now most of them are pre-labelled with whoever won lol.

Only 7 days left? :csad: Oh well, I’ll be busy throughout that period but will at least catch the big athletics finals. Glad you’ve managed to keep up with so much of it and enjoyed it.

I like the swimming portions a lot, but I LOVE track and field. So the real stars of the show start now for me!

Noah Lyles…seriously, I am constantly amazed. He is slow out of the blocks, is awkward as heck in his first 20m, but accelerates through the last 60m. It’s amazing how much he overcomes in that final 40m. And this is consistently the case in most of his races. He is the funhouse mirror of Usain Bolt, who was a textbook 100m artist who could also win the 200m consistently. Lyles is the textbook 200m runner whose athleticism lets him best his competition in the 100m.

Yeah, Noah is way better at 200m than 100m even after this gold. I'd bet on him winning any given 4 finals in the 200m (while he's still at his peak) compared to say just the next one in the 100m. I don't see Bolt as a textbook 100m guy either - very difficult to be that when you're 6'5. He was an amazing starter for his size but his level of superiority there was marginal compared to his huge superiority (like Lyles) in the second part of the 100m. One day we will get a finisher like Bolt/Lyles who is also an explosive starter (Su Bingtian style, or even a Ben Johnson without drugs) and consistently leading the pack after 30m before their turbo finishing ability kicks in. :D

Oh btw just remembered this sprint combination thing that awards points like a decathlon for each event. It's out of date for Lyles who has improved both the 100 and 200 since, but just to show that for Bolt his 100m and 200m records are very close in number of points awarded (ie roughly equivalent). When Noah is done I expect his 200m PB to be a fair bit stronger than his 100m.

What made Bolt amazing was that his legs were so long that his strides had the potential to be massive, but at the same time, his legs pumped so fast that he actually got an extra 1 to 2 strides in, which meant that there was complete propulsion and power behind each stride he took.

Maybe “textbook” isn’t the word for him, but physical perfection might be.
