10 most depressing movie endings ever

Memento, you realize this guy is gonna spend the rest of his life continuous finding and killing John Gs

Not only that, but the revelation of it all. Through the course of the movie, you feel for Leonard, you're rooting for him to pull through. Only to discover at the end that this man is basically just a serially killer, and deep down he knows it. Depressing because you're fooled. I love it.

The Mist should be disqualified.

Because making that ending was a clear attempt at making a depressing shock ending. Like it went out of its way to make an ending that everyone would talk about and make more business.

Also because it takes the top spot which Brazil should hold.

The one thing about A.I. I would do would be to fade out at the point that David sinks to the bottom and is staring at the Blue Fairy, but is obviously not able to touch it. And that is the end of the movie. I felt that would be a Stanley Kubrick ending, while everything after that point is definitely a Steven Spielberg ending. I think that it would have been a better, if depressing, ending for David to not be able to fulfill his quest for the Blue Fairy.

For those who have seen it, try watching it without that ending. And for those that haven't, pause it at the point that David is staring at the Blue Fairy and judge it to that point before you continue and see the sappy ending that Spielberg saddled it with.

Depends on what version. The US one has some love conquers all type ending

I would also say Arlington Road

Actually that is the most depressing movie ending ever... it crushed Terry Gilliam's dream version of Brazil.

SEV7N.

"The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. I believe in half that statement".

Million Dollar Baby had a rather depressing ending.

Ending of MY DOG SKIP. The movie is VERY depressing once you know how it ends.

Bridge to Terebithia. Water Horse ending. Not the most depressing, but definitely both sad in their own ways.

Saturday Night Fever not only had a horribel ending but a horribly depressing ending as well.

The Yearling with Gregory Peck had a fairly sad ending as well.

1. The Mist/Green Mile(Tie)
2. Powder
3. Starman
4. Terminator 2
5. Se7en
6. Ghost
7. Sweet November
8. Philadelphia
9. Edward Scissorhands
10. American History X(I was more pissed off than depressed. But the ending is still sad.)

The Last American Virgin - because the guy didn't get the girl in the end.

Depressing ending? Really?

I'd say it had more of a depressing beginning...At least in the end he went to heaven, instead of being stuck in limbo for eternity.

OK here are some I would rank above this list. And I agree with the Guard, Seven is a pretty downer ending (no particular order)

Atonement
Seven
Dr. Strangeglove
Chinatown
Resevoir Dogs

The House of Sand and Fog has a pretty sad ending.
Agreed

Im gonna have to go with Mystic River for my contribution,..sure the hell made me never want to go to Boston.

The so called "sappy" ending was in the original script. Speilberg said it himself.

Boyz N The Hood, where you find out that Doughboy was killed almost 2 weeks later after his brother.

I can't believe no one said Stand By Me.

And I don't know about anyone else, but I thought the ending to Serenity was somewhat the depressing.

The Last American Virgin - because the guy didn't get the girl in the end.
I read about the ending of thos movie on Wiki...

When Gary arrives at the party, his dreams are shattered when he sees Karen making out with Rick. The film ends with the credits rolling over a close up of tears streaming down Gary's face as he drives home.

Definitely Hero for me. Nameless went there for an assassination and ended up being talked into having himself killed for the greater good. That's an incredible sacrifice to make.

I also cried heavily during the last samurai. I hate confrontations where its old school natives with culture against the west with technology and the west wins. I liked how all the japanese soldiers on the western front bowed when that samurai dude got killed, it ate me up from the inside that they still respected him.

I've also got to say Terminator 2. The fact that cameron allows us to get emotionally attached to an emotionless android is beautiful. The way he slowly dips into the molten and his thumb goes up at the end followed by sarah connor's speech. I don't know how anyone can watch that film and feel good about themselves, it makes me sick to the stomach to be a human being that a lifeless robot can care more about humanity than the average JOE.

It's probably the most effective film ending I've ever watched.

can't think of ten at this moment but

Gangs Of new York
House Of sand and fog
Saving Private Ryan
Donni Darko
No Country For Old Men
American History X(To me the saddest)
avaiator

I disagree with Donnie Darko. He chose to sacrifice himself so that his mother, sister, and the girl he loved would live. And everyone waking up and realizing what bastards they were helped too. I do agree with Aviator there though, as it really is depressing that Hughes was such a genius and never really got the help he needed to regain his sanity.

On the official list, the Mist definitetly wins.

Empire, easily.

I hated Empire Strikes Back as a kid because of that ending.

I thought Han was going to die. Vader is Lukes dad and Lando has ditched the purple cape! Blasphemy!
