300 should be entertaining, from what i've seen, but i'm really holding out for a decent adaptation of Gates Of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Perhaps then we'll finally see a more accurate representation of the battle of Thermopylae. Anybody else feeling this?

ME!!!!! As a Greek I get PISSED when movies about my ancestors are done either CRAPPY or too stylized (Troy and Alexander come to mind)!!!
Troy SUCKED cause It wasn't EVEN remotely accurate to the Illiad and Alexander was Broke Back Mountain in Sandles and Armour! There are many refrences to Alexander getting pissed at people for offered him men, boys and women!

I WANT Gates of Fire to come out!! I've decided to wait and see how 300 is done before I pass judgement on this movie.

If you look in one of the other threads I email Pressfield about Gates and he responded back. Check it out

Honestly, I have been wanting a movie of Gates of Fire, but now I think that I would prefer it to be an HBO miniseries like they did with Rome. This would allow for all the training and characterization that is present throughout the entire book to still be included and still allow for the violence of the battle to still be prevalent since it would be on HBO.

Cool, will have to look for that thread! I'm definitely going to watch 300 - just cuz I love the story of the battle of Thermopylae, but I know that historical accuracy will be woefully lacking (as it was in Frank Miller's graphic novel). It'll still be a cool film though. Gates Of Fires will be king if they can get it done though!

An HBO miniseries could be good. Rome was brilliant stuff, but if not, i'd be happy with an epic cinematic treatment. Make it 3 and half hours and i'm there lol.

I say fire Gates of Fire to work it would need to be a 2 parter like Kill Bill! The first movie could include Xeones travels with his cousin and tutor, going to Sparta. Show the Agoge which would introduce the all the main and minor characters. At the end of the first movie could be with Dienekes's wife forcing him to accept her nephew's son as his own so that Rooster and his son can be spared from death at the hands of Polynikes and the Krypteia.

And at the end of the movie Dienekes (who had only girls was ineligible for the 300) is told that he has a son now and is eligible for the 300 sires much to the shock and horror of his wife(who secretly was glad that her husband was illigible for the 300).

The second movie can be the march and meeting people on the way to Thermopylae and the battle and the aftermath including the result of the Battle of Plataea.

Sounds like a great idea herakles - Then we could have the huge budget required, and the space for the story that it deserves! Top idea!

Just chiming in to agree on how much Troy sucked. I want a real Homer movie. Or maybe some Elizabeth Cook "Achilles" style film.

If anybody wants a balanced view of the entire conflict between Persia and Greece, you should check ou Persian Fire. It is a really good book.

Oh man Gates of Fire would be just phenomenal.

I mean, I'm glad we've got something coming out. Anything at all.
That being said, I really wish it was Gates of Fire instead of 300.

Just from the reviews I've read of fanboys, heres the general feel I've gotten
"oh man it was so gorey, it was so cool how much gore they put in, oh that was great. And boobs! heck yeah for nudity, thank goodness, too many movies these days exhibit taste and don't give us nudity. Oh yeah the movie and stuff looks cool too"

Now me personally, I loved Gates of Fire because it DIDN'T dissolve into sex and nudity for no reason. Heck it didn't use any at all. The emphasis throughout was on the warriors and their training and the final battle. Violence and gore I don't mind, but in a movie about warriors I find the random sex scenes unneeded.

I'm just saying that most of the reviews from fans I've read were more excited about how depraved the film was, and not how it was as an actual film.

And so, I hold out still for a movie of "Gates of Fire"
