Anyone know what this symbol means? Google doesn't.
While that is the most probable, another theory is that King Nero, who ruled the Roman Empire at around 70 AD, loathed the Christians. He thought they were a terrible, unruly bunch. So, he took their beloved symbol, the cross, and not only turned it upside down, but broke the arms as well. Then, he put a circle around it, in a sense claiming that the world would be 'perfect' without Christianity in it. Then, a long time after, the hippies searched for a symbol against middle America suburbia, specifically Christians. And they settled on the 'peace symbol'.It is a combination of the semaphore letters for N and D which was used in protests in the 60s for Nuclear Disarmament.
