6 Cheap Acting Tricks That Fool The Critics Every Time!

Except for the Outsider one, those are all universally true. Anything in WWII is the one that should have been in there.

Seems like you really dislikes critics Catman. The guy that wrote this has a point but his examples are bad. Many of his examples, actually most of them completely deserves the love they has. I mean do anyone honestly believe that De Niro really isnt that good in Raging Bull and we only think he was good because he got fat?

I wouldnt say biopics are "cheap" attempts. Their the one role that allows an actor to play someone else rather than a fictional character that may (or may not) conform to their usually style of acting. Foxx, Pheonix, and even Busey were good in their roles. PLus Busey's nomination was pre-motorcycle accident before everything went a little wonky.

Also comedic actors turned serious isnt all that cheap either, since it only works with high-profile comedic actors who have gained experience and considering the academy's distaste for comedies and the critics inconsistent liking for them, they certainly wont be receiving any cred for that.

Although i do agree with the mentally handicapped one.

I still feel Jim Carrey was robbed of the Oscar for The Truman Show. I mean, my God, that is an incredible movie (imo) and his performance was outstanding (once again, imo)

^Agreed.

I don't think the movies themselves are "cheap" tricks per say, just an admitance of the seemingly rigid Hollywood belief in what gets nominated. I doubt District 9 will get a nomination(maybe this year now that they increased the list), but I bet Meryl Streep gets a nod for her Julia Childs portryal.

The best thing about the biopic is that Hollywood is free to embellish the back story as much as they would like. How do you know Ray Charles didn't really walk on the moon? Were you there? No, so shut up and watch the movie. Speaking of Ray Charles, Jamie Foxx took home a Best Actor trophy also for his heroic portrayal of a young Stevie Wonder playing Ray Charles.
Haha, thats great. If I ever made a biopic, I would use that just as soon as someone started complaining that it wasnt factually correct.

That was a pretty funny list.

One question though... where they hell did that picture of Christian Bale in a feather boa come from? I know he played a flamboyantly gay character in Velvet Goldmine, but I don't recognize that image. Not sure who the other guy is either.

Only thing missing from that list is being in a World War 2 drama, just ask Kate Winslet;

Couple years later she gets her Oscar for what? A holocaust movie, brilliant!

Yeah. But she should have won it for Revolutionary Road. She was great in both films, but her performance in RR was better, IMO. Leo should have gotten a nom too. Don't know why they snubbed that movie.

I imagine that it is Velvet Goldmine because I'm pretty sure the guy in the image with him is Eddie Izzard, who also starred in Velvet Goldmine.

That article would be stronger if they actually didn't include plenty of terrific performances in their examples. Yeah, a few snuck through probably due to those reasons, but trying to write off Robert DeNiro's performance in Raging Bull as a "cheap acting trick" is an argument against the article.

While Cracked.'s article is somewhat correct i believe that as long as the audience believes what the actors are bringing , then it's all good.
For example i really do believe that Joaquin Phoenix gave an amazing performance as Johnny Cash. His voice was pretty much the same. And considering how Phoenix talks with his real life , i do think that his praise is justified. Not so much with Reese Witherspoon's who did give a good performance as an actress but it wasn't so much that she "became" the character.

Deniro in Raging Bull is the greatest acting performance of all time.

Hahaha...that was hilarious. Another thing the academy loves is if 'you are the star of a melodrama that includes you having an extreme nervous breakdown where you destroy furniture or just about anything around you for about five minutes or so'....thats like guaranteed oscar consideration right there.

this pretty much includes every oscar win in history... its too true unfortunatly
