She-Wolf of London

This was simultaneously super disappointing and super intriguing for reasons I can't spoil just yet. I thought it was interesting that they took this idea where it could have easily been another monster flick and chose to do something different with it. This is probably the cheapest Universal Monster movie I've seen so far and it shows between the limited number of sets to the hour and change runtime to what they do with the she-wolf. I will say I thought June Lockhart and Sara Haden were actually pretty good and where their characters end up was something I did enjoy despite everything that happens.
Spoilers:
So to spoil it, this movie doesn't have a She-Wolf nor there's any transformation sequence, it's actually a whodunit thriller disguised as a creature feature. The movie tries to get you thinking one of them is the werewolf and because of the hour runtime, the movie really takes up most of it getting to know the main character and her relationship with the fiancé, the aunt, and her cousin. I can totally see why most people hated this movie for false advertising but I kinda dug the story they had instead. It's not a perfect whodunit but I thought it kept me guessing the entire time.

Night 11...Nazi Zombies

Operation Overlord

What a strange movie Produced by JJ Abrams.

The movie constantly switches between B and C quality with everything.
One scene the actors are decent, the next bad.
One Scene is well shot, the next pretty bad.
That runs through the whole movie.
The constant switch of quality even in script, is leaving this movie in a weird state.
Like, its not awful but also not good.
It wants to be something but cant.
You are left with a mixed bag you dont really wanna watch again once its over.
Im always one for killing Nazi Zombies...or Nazis in General...but i also need a bit more to that.
And this movie never delivers.
Okay movie for watching once, if you are bored and its on some streaming platform or so...but thats about it.

Late to the party as usual - story of my life :o

Sadly, due to personal issues I haven't watched anywhere near as many scary movies this year as I would have liked, aside from a few for The Hype's Movie Club. But we're getting down to the wire here and I'm determined to squeeze in as many as I can before the Big Day :yay:

Starting with:

Totally Killer (2023)

I watched this with the roommate last night and we both loved it! Yes it's the umpteenth example of a meta horror comedy but what differentiates this film from the more cynical entries is charm and wit.

I find it interesting how we've had a string of films in recent years that deal with time travel and dimension-hopping. You never know when the zeitgeist will hit, and I've always believed in the theory that movies in general - and horror movies in particular - are great barometers for gauging which ills are plaguing society at any given time. The fact that so many popular entertainments of late are about wanting to travel back in time to right wrongs speaks volumes about where we're at right now as a culture...

Anyway no need to overthink this. I had a total blast with the film. Kiernan makes for a charming lead, the High Concept isn't as distracting as I feared it might be, and most importantly, the movie is FUN!! At first I thought the killer's mask was silly but it got progressively creepier as the film went along. Major points too for the movie actually taking place during Spooky Season...

I'll definitely be revisiting this one again, and I'll be first in line if they end up making a sequel :hehe:

I just delved into Primes' low budget horror selection. Oh, man is this a doozy.

I don't know if it's still there but I watched one called Howl a few months back, the actor that plays Alfred in Gotham is in it..
albeit briefly
I think because I randomly decided to watch that one evening, but now every time I go onto Prime I get offered up all sorts of bad horror films to watch. :D

I watched 'Howl' last year - Pertwee signed on because the director is actually the guy who did the creature designs and makeup for 'Dog Soldiers.' Personally, I enjoyed it. Very basic, but a decent lil werewolf flick.

Has some value purely as an anthropological case study and curiosity. Otherwise as a “movie” it’s a frustrating experience. There’s footage depicting the titular cannibalism (also tons of r*** which is just unnecessary) but it’s all surface level stuff. The movie tries to turn it around into some sort of commentary about the cruelty of western colonialism with some throw away dialogue, but I didn’t buy into it. The majority of the 90 minute runtime feels like shock value for the sake of it. I read up on some behind the scenes drama and apparently the tribal people were horribly exploited. Wouldn’t recommend it unless you’ve got a strong stomach and can tolerate the repetitive, disjointed organization of the footage (because yes, it’s so haphazardly thrown together).

Quote of the film: "Jesus Christmas! Holy Jesus! Goddamn! Holy Jesus jumping Christmas ****!"

This movie has gotten better for me on rewatch, but still not overly fond of it as I am some of the others. I just can't find myself liking Tommy. The movie still has the usual fun outside of him though, and I enjoy the kills. The girls are still beautiful. Also just funny to me that Crispin Glover went from this to Back to the Future.

My least favorite of the bunch, which is a shame because it's the most interesting sequel conceptually. It's just mad boring.

This was a pretty entertaining little French horror, comedy show although it's definitely heavier on the comedy than the horror but definitely something worth checking out this Halloween season if you like shows like this.

Wow I honestly forgot how awesome this show was since I haven't seen it in over decade but revisiting this one it's pretty amazing to see how much you could actually get away with back in 2009. For a CBS network show the kills in this were pretty damn graphic but I love how it never felt gratuitous at all and they actually do a great job making feel genuine sympathy for some of the characters. Easily better than most of the stuff we get in theatres nowadays despite its limitations and it also shows that Katie Cassidy really deserved to have a much better movie/tv career than she did.

Having just finished this maybe I still need some time to digest it but my initial thoughts are while I did really enjoyed it its far from my favorite thing Flanagan has put out recently. Hill House and Midnight Mass are still top tier for me but it's definitely an improvement over Bly Manor and Midnight Club mostly because of the excellent performances from Bruce Greenwood, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell and even Mark Hamill. Flanagan is still a master craftsman though and as long as he's still making stuff I'll pretty much watch anything he makes next even if I don't end up loving it.
