A Cure for Wellness

Got invited to an early screening of the film tonight. I'm really hoping I can make it.

I hear it's getting mixed reviews.

I saw it last week. I really liked a lot about it but as a whole, there was something missing. I'll watch it again but as of now I'm unsure if it's just something I should've loved.

I get Shutter Island vibes if only because Dane looks like Leo and the setting looks 1950s hospital.

I like Dane Dehaan so I'll probably see it for him.

Yeah very mixed, a lot of negative reactions are that it's too long.

I don't know why, but I get some Lovecraft vibes from this as well, or is that nuts? Either way, very curious about this movie and really want to see it. It looks really unnerving.

One of the reviews I read said that it had some great individual set pieces, but as a whole it was less than its individual parts. Apparently the main character isnt very likeable and its bloated (146 minutes) and the plot isnt interesting enough to justify that runtime.

Ill definitely watch the film, but Im not surr that I will go watch it in theaters. Sounds like something Id enjoy more if I watched it at home while lying in bed.

I'm can't wait for this. I need some Verbinski craziness.

I plan to check it out this weekend at some point for sure.

I saw it today. Very entertaining, but excruciatingly dumb. The film does it's best to underestimate the audience at every turn, no matter if it's a plot twist or a visual gag. It does look absolutely gorgeous, and held my attention through the long running time. First two hours are great, and then something bizarre happens and the film turns into a much more blockbuster'y affair, included with more upbeat score. Very very bizarre. Still, I think it's a good time at the movies, so I would recommend it!

I'm definitely gonna see it then, love Gore's visual style and this one looks very much like him going back to The Ring days with the atmosphere and creepy visuals

Jesus Christ. I have never seen a movie like this before. And I won't see anything else like it this year. It's a miracle this movie got made today. Because once you see the movie, you will believe me. It reminded me of the original Wicker Man and Shutter Island and some old gothic horror films, but this is a movie that's entirely its own thing and tells a pretty simple story in a very unique and extremely weird way. The movie has its problems (it's too long and has some structural redundancies) but everything that it's trying to accomplish works. Verbinski goes swinging for the fences. The man is one hell of a director and one of the most underrated mainstream directors today. He knows how to direct. He's wonderful at atmosphere and memorable images, and some of these images are stamped into my brain.

Movie Bob's review sums up a lot of my thoughts but this movie's reviews are way too harsh. I don't know what people were expecting out of this and it's okay if people didn't like it, but this isn't a movie I don't think anybody like me would have expected. This is not just the story of a guy getting trapped while searching for another guy at some facility. As excited as I was for this movie, I didn't think too much into it, I wanted to let Verbinski take me away and show me the rest. Having seen it, if I were to describe this movie to you, I would sound insane. It reminded me of a European film, sort of alien, but it still knew what it was doing and told a story. It gets under your skin and inside of you. It's bat**** insane, weird and pure auteur filmmaking where again, I don't know how a movie with this script and budget even got made. But by God, I'm glad it did. Even if it isn't perfect, it should be more supported because we need more movies like this. It's gothic horror at some of its most gothic in nontraditional ways. This is not your average horror movie.

I hope with time passing, people will appreciate it more. Just see it anyway. Because it's not just weird and unique, but it's also really good and has a story to tell and it will stay with you whether you want it to or not. 8/10.

I got to agree with you and i got to agree with Chris Stuckmann in his review. I didn't know what to think when i walked out of the theater but two days later i have to really praise this movie for having the massive guts to just go completely out there and be totally off the wall. Yep it's too long and there are some issues here and there but the cast is really good, i admire its guts, and Gore Verbinski directed the hell out of this thing.

The bad reviews encouraged to skip this. I get tired easily just sitting for 2 and 1/2 hours so, thats another reason. But the visuals from the trailers are really good.

I get Shutter Island vibes if only because Dane looks like Leo and the setting looks 1950s hospital.

After seeing it today, I have to expand on this. I feel like the filmmakers essentially wanted to remake Shutter Island with a few differences in treatment. I'd go even further to say that DeHaan was cast because he looks like DiCaprio.

I'm really disappointed in this overall. It had a few good ideas but the pacing, structure, and the fact that it looks so closely to Shutter Island, which is an excellent film hurt it.

Not to mention, if you watched The OA, you're essentially seeing Jason Isaacs doing the same thing again.

Still mulling over if I should see this one in theaters or wait for HD or Netflix.

Wait for DVD, or go to a matinee. I'm very disappointed in this. The visuals are great, but that does not make up for the rest of the BS.

See it in theaters. Regardless whether this movie totally works (it mostly does except for the length. This is a good movie.) it should be supported because we won't be seeing a movie like this ever again probably. It's not a disaster like Tomorrowland, otherwise I'd say shame on Verbisnki for ****ing this up, but this is a movie that should be seen in theaters. This is a movie with such bizarre ideas merged with a familiar story that we're just not used to seeing together. You won't forget it. I'll put it this way. I'll never think of drinking water in the same way again. It's not a movie for everyone, as it would be pretty esoteric to a average movie goer, but if you're a film fan, see it. It's just something I wouldn't want to miss out on. It's worth seeing on how truly insane this movie is.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. It just sinks into you. I just haven't seen a mainstream movie this bizarre in theaters in God, I don't remember when. Maybe the decade. Verbinski films are kind of ahead of their time. Nobody talks about Rango, the Pirates sequels have gotten better with age, and The Ring was something pretty ****ing wild. This is no exception. Again, it's a movie I see people revisiting in time. This is finally a good movie that exists within the landscape of endless unoriginal ideas. It's something that would have come out in the 70's.

Another thing about the length. It's too long, but it's never boring.

My thoughts...

It's interesting to see the consensus on this because for me I thought it was really good. It could be that I kinda over heard some spoilers regarding to the ending, but I was prepared for something wild and over the top sh**. I will say from the get go I absolutely loved the visuals and the cinematography, that's something even most hated critics will agree on. Gore Verbinski and his cinematographer were working overtime in that department. The acting was pretty good. While I never bought into Dane DeHaan as a hot shot business executive, he was doing his best Leo DiCaprio impression from Shutter Island. Speaking of which, this movie is an amalgam of several different suspense horror mysteries like Shutter Island, The Wicker Man (the good one), Crimson Peak, and even Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But the biggest comparison I can make for this is... it's probably the closest thing you'll get to a real Resident Evil/BioShock movie. While this movie is very long (and could have easily cut out maybe 20 minutes), I was never bored by it. Overall, this is gonna be one of those movies I can see get a better reception over time.
8.5/10

Gotta say I'm surprised by the negativity from critics but oh well.

Although I was disappointed by it, I do agree that this movie should be supported as I'm also surprised a movie like this was even made in this day and age. It's not a bad film, it was supremely directed and acted; just a tad long and some strange story choices.

I rated it 7/10 though I want to re-watch it again.

I loved the strangeness of it. Just the whole thing. It's a movie that plays by its own rules and creates its own conventions. I mean this, I've never seen these combination of ideas executed in a movie before, despite the influences. Which is exactly more what I want to see in original filmmaking. It shouldn't sound like such an oddity.

Here's finally the first and last big budget horror film in the vein of The Shining. People on here and film fans have been asking for one and nobody saw it. This will probably go down as one of the most interesting films of the decade for me, certainly horror wise. It's been three days since I saw it and it still makes up most of my thoughts.

He'd be great but I don't want him to just resort to a superhero film after coming off of this. I want the guy to keep doing stuff like this. Verbinski is too maverick for WB's DC anyway.
