Here's a story that's been bumping around my head for a while. It's inspired by possibly watching one too many Bogart films. More to come. Maybe.
Chapter 1: Killer in the Fog
Failure. In one way or another, we all fail. Miserably, horrendously, slightly. We all find a way. It comes in a multitude of forms and visits us randomly. Some are marked by continual failure, others are blessed with only the occasional meeting. However, none of us are spared from the ultimate failure; death. For Edward Burton, failure found him on a fog chocked, cold evening on the streets of New Port.
It had been an exquisite night. Ed strolled down an alley way towards the street, turned a final time, and grinned at the memory of his latest adventure. Elaine Thomalson had promised to give him a good time, and she had certainly delivered. Ed's driver was scheduled to meet him in front of Murdoc's Detective Agency at three o'clock and the mark was fast approaching. He dug in his pocket to retrieve the watch Lauren had given him for his birthday. The fog was so think he was forced to hold it just inches from his face. Four after three o'clock.
"That damned fog must be holding him up."
Something slammed into Ed's chest. He couldn't quite register what had hit him. A noise tried to pry its way into his head (A ringing? No, maybe it was a bang?) but he was distracted by the sight of red marching its way across his jacket. Suddenly, a burning sensation crept into his skin, and every muscle in his body seized up. He kept inhaling, but no air could get out. The pressure built, and he became confident his lungs would burst at any moment. Everything was too tight. His hand clenched his watch. He couldn't breathe! There wasn't any air! NO AIR! Why wasn't anyone helping?! For the love of God, HELP!
He crumpled like a discarded tissue. Falling on his side, he let a few feeble coughs escape, along with a touch of blood. His peripheral vision faded to black, and he succumbed to death.
Edward Burton, crime king of New Port, another victim of the ultimate failure.
