Are there any actors who are currently not being taken very seriously, but you have a feeling that they will change everyone's mind in the future?
I think:

Ryan Reynolds (God help us all)
Lily Collins (she NEEDS to play Audrey Hepburn in a biopic)
Taylor Kitsch (although I think he was unfairly labeled a bad actor just because he had two flops in a row)

Thoughts?

Paul Rudd
Mark Ruffalo
Ben Stiller
Reese Witherspoon

Ryan Reynolds and Seann William Scott. Love those guys, but they have the same thing McConaughey did. No matter what they do or how talented they are people keep bringing up the role they played in a teen comedy (Dazed & Confused, Van Wilder, American Pie) over and over.

Mark Ruffalo

That's an odd choice.

Ruffalo has been quite successful in movies like Collateral, Zodiac and Shutter Island.

He also had an Academy Award nomination in 2010 for 'Best Supporting Actor' in The Kids are All Right.

Lindsey Lohan, if someone gives her a chance and its the right role.

I think with Lohan she has to clean herself up and stay clean, like Robert Downey Jr. did.

Also thinking Ryan Reynolds. Although in terms of big comebacks to compare him to, I'd go with Affleck over McConaughey. Perhaps Ryan will try out directing?

I like the mention of Paul Rudd. I've always liked him, but he has often done pretty mediocre comedies that you forget after a few weeks. I'm very intrigued about his part in Ant-Man, and hopefully it will lead to better things.

Another actor I think did a great 180 is Ben Foster. I first remember him in comic book movies like The Punisher and X-Men Last Stand, before he completely blew my mind in 3:10 to Yuma.

But for future. I don't know why, but I keep eying Zac Efron. Don't know why, but I feel this guy has a lot of untapped potential, if given the right role. He probably needs to mature a little more, but I can see him pulling a Jared Leto in his 40's.

Efron is actually a decent actor. I think as he gets older, the roles he'll go for will be much more varied and mature but I think for now, he's in a good place career-wise.

Paul Rudd
Mark Ruffalo
Ben Stiller
Reese Witherspoon

Mark has always done well in the indie world, garnering attention. In fact, he's going to be in Foxcatcher which SHOULD be an Oscar hopeful.

Yea Mark Ruffalo is taken more seriously than the other people on that list.

I like the suggestion of Paul Rudd.

I would like to see Paul Rudd do more serious stuff. I've enjoyed Rudd's performances in The Cider House Rules, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and The Great Gatsby.
Ben Foster is underrated.
I agree. Foster is really versatile

I think Chris Evans might surprise people. Evans has long stated his desire to direct and despite being in many comedic comic book movie roles Evans seems to take his acting career more seriously than you would think.

Snowpiercer has had some good reviews as well.

I agree with Warhorse about Ben Foster, he was brilliant in that school shooting movie.

Ryan Reynolds has great talent, he just attracts the roles high don't really let him show it. He was great in the buried movie

Lohan was actually quite brilliant in The Canyons. Very good film too. It doesn't deserve the bad reviews and most certainly not the Razzie nomination that Lohan got for it.

It was a very good performance and I would sooner nominated it for an Oscar than a Razzie.

Channing Tatum, he may be successful but his movies aren't all that great apart from Magic Mike really.

I actually think there is a good chance that we will see this repeat this year!

I have a strong feeling that Steve Carell will be a major player in the lead actor race for Foxcatcher

Jim Carrey
Nic Cage
Shia Labeouf
Michael Cera

Plus he has a big time Superhero movie coming up. He's fine. No need to worry about him.

My pick is Ryan Phillipe. I've ALWAYS loved this guy, think he's a great actor, and he's never had a real chance to let it shine. I think he's been labeled a "pretty boy" with no real talent, and it's the farthest from the truth.

I think he's often compared to Freddie Prinze Jr. when he SHOULD be compared to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in terms of 90s teen-heartthrobs who turn out to have some legitimate chops.

Stop-Loss (2008)
Breach (2007)
Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
Crash (2004)
Gosford Park (2001)
Antitrust (2001)
The Way of the Gun (2000)
Cruel Intentions (1999)
54 (1998)
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Jake Gyllenhall.

He has started with Prisoners.

You know who pulled a McConaughey? Sandra Bullock.

Regardless what some may think of The Blind Side, that movie alone really helped her career with that Oscar, and Gravity only cements her status as a serious female lead. And like Matthew, she had years of rom-coms, only to break free thanks to John Lee Hancock and Alfonso Cuaron. With the latter, Sandra was actually like the fifth choice (Angie, ScarJo, NatPo, and MaCo aka Marion Cotillard) and now I can't see anyone in that film but Sandy.
