Al Jazeera headed to a channel near you...

Should Al Jazeera America be allowed on US Television?

  • Yes, all sides should be heard.

  • No, they are anti-American

  • Don't really have an opinion on it.

Let's keep the discussion on the TV station, we have a thread for discussing the issues of the Middle East...take this conversation on Israel to that thread.

Al Jazeera has been more modern and progressive than other people would assume. They handle women's rights issues and lots of world events as unbiased as possible. I don't watch it as much as the BBC World but they've had good reporting.

Your absolutely right Red Mask.

As far as their Al Jazeera English website, and TV yes...but from what I've read of their Al Jazeera Arab website, not so much. It very much mirrors what "The Muslim Brotherhood" has done. Their English version of their website, IS NOT a direct translation in any way from their Arab website. I think that gives many pause as to totally go with all of this without some reserve, and I can understand that.

I don't understand why plurality should be construed as a threat. You can decide for yourself whether it is biased or anti-American, and whether therefore to watch it or not. I can't accept that it would be appropriate to exclude them because they might be. That seems rather...un-American, actually.

As shown on The Daily Show Rupert Murdoch has holdings in Middle East news companies that air anti-American views yet people aren't saying boycott Fox News.

What these Islamophobic fools forget is that a Saudi prince is part owner of Fox News and various other media outlets. If they wanted to create propoganda they could do so easily enough already.

Well, my stand is...even if they are anti-american, let their network stand as is....NOW, if it is, in fact, being used as a mechanism of terrorism, then that is a different story. That however, is hard to prove...

People can choose to watch or not watch, and my prediction is there ratings will be very good in the beginning and the sharply drop off and they will be gone quicker than Current.

I don't even know what Current TV is. Or I should say, was.

It started out to be a very different attempt at bringing world news to people that might not enjoy the normal news genre. They did a lot of documentaries on different issues, some that you probably wouldn't see on mainstream media, mainly because the countries and the people they were talking to wouldn't speak to mainstream media.

*Human Traffiking
*Mexican Coyotes

And in some cases, as in Laura Ling, her and her producer were held in North Korea for 140 days while shooting a story for Current/Vanguard Journalism Unit.

It was really some good stuff, then all of the sudden they started hiring the throw offs of other networks, Olbermann, Spitzer, Joy Behar...

When they brought on David Bohrman as President from CNN....I knew they were in trouble, he almost killed CNN.

So the content of their Arab language website is different from the content from their English language website. But English speakers can still get good news they can understand. What's the problem there? BBC America and CNN in America have nowhere near the same worldly content as the BBC World and CNN International. And the English language news from Al Jazeera is still reporting about issues of democracy, human rights, and other international news.

I hope they don't change their format from Al Jazeera English to some "America" version where we talk about one child kidnapping for 3 hours, then hear 3 pundits jockeying for airtime.

After all, they are probably going to be competing with the likes of CNN, rather than Fox or MSNBC.

That's just how the business works. They're catering to their customers. And local news like kidnappings would be important to people where that crime is happening. The sensationalism could go away, though.

No problem for me, in fact, I've said....let them air.

I was simply pointing out problems that some may have with it.

Also, I believe it has been pointed out that the Arab version is the one that is the propaganda, anti-American version...and some may not want to give Al Jazeera any of their time whether it is good coverage or not....which is fine, they don't have to watch if they don't want to...
