Alan Moore Endorsed a Watchmen movie--in 1987

apparently alan was talking out of his ass when he said in one of his interviews that the main reason he doesn't endorse film adaptations of his works is because he thinks his stories work best in the comic book medium because thats how he made them.

I refuse to believe Alan Moore was EVER so naiive that he didn't understand that there would be changes in order for WATCHMEN to make it to Hollywood.

I think he's essentially become embittered by his experiences with DC since then, and the adaptions of his movies.

But I refuse to believe he was ever that naiive.

Bee-leeve it, baby--it talks!

Ummm yeah, this quote came from a magazine published at the time (1987) so it's for real, and he was that naive.

People flip flop all the time on things. He probably got all caught up in all the excitement surrounding the movie. I don't blame him, It would be amazing if I wrote something that was hugely popular and Hollywood wanted to make it into a big movie.

It's a funny read--especially if you have read the history of interviews of him on this topic. It's a 180 degree turn.

Arnold as Manhattan?

That's greasy ass Joel Silver for ya.

That's not necessarily a bad casting choice. He'd be glowing blue the whole time and Billy Crudup can only dream of having a screen presence like Arnold. Especially when Manhattan is practically a god.

Remember people famous superstars =/= bad casting choices for everything.

Oh, and the same "greasy ass" Joel Silver helped gave us Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Predator, V For Vendetta and The Matrix.

Did you see Batman and Robin? Arnold was already lame and blue in that film so it would be unncecessary to subject fans to more torture and bad jokes about "cold":

I like him as an action star, but I accept that he is a horrible actor and an even ****tier govenor.

Also--You would buy him as a NUCLEAR PHYSICIST??? Kindergarten cop was an occupational stretch at best.

Yes, yes, greasy ass Joel Silver. The guy who made those movies (nice job picking the good ones--I actually thought that V sucked, though.) and also all these crappy movies:

But enough about Greasy ass, Joel Silver.

Are you critisizing one of the most awesome Arnold movies of all time? :oldrazz:

I knew it. I knew some sorry ******* would come forward and tell me that Commando was a good film. Or that Lethal Weapon 3 was watchable. Or that, they liked Hudson Hawk because it was "playful with a finely tuned sense of whimsy".

:cwink: Nice one, Jones. You just redeemed your "Shining" misquote from the other day. Nice work, Indeed.

The only thing good about Commando is the title--and even that is misleading. The NES videogame was probably better than the film it was based on.

Re: Whether alan Moore would have ever been naive enough to think there would be no Hollywood changes to his work(before they were actually made).

He said in an interview that when it came time for the Hughes Bros to do 'From Hell' he knew that they would not get that book down. But he thought he'd get, or was hoping for, the same situation with 'Do androids Dream of electric Sheep' and 'Blade Runner', where one does not resemble the other so much except in concept, but the film stands apart and alone as a piece of great work of it's own.
Yeah, can't recall where it was from right now, but it's a shame to read that interview with his enthusiasm for the Hughes Bros doing the job with Johnny Depp.

I imagine it's possible that he did think, perhaps concieve , of Watchemen as being unfilmable while he was putting it together with Gibbons. All those little puzzle-like links etc, no way he would think that such an effect could have been done on film(or anyone would have bothered to try even). Maybe now it has, and we can flip back the disc to see the links almost like a comic book. He would have been thinking it would have been a compromised film and just hoping for the best.
If i had a genie come out a lamp one of my 3 wishes would be to sit down with Alan Moore and watch this adaption with him, his first viewing natch.

Oh come on, now! He didn't say it was good. He said it was amazing. And you HAVE to admit, that it is one of the most awesomely cheesy movies ever made, if not THE most awesomely cheesy movie ever made. It's such a fun movie to watch. Arnold is attacked by 3000 guys with machine guns and somehow they all miss?! And then Arnold proceeds to kill ALL of them? I'm sorry, but you can't get any more amazing than that.

Except for "Troll 2".

:o:woot::woot::woot::woot::woot:

I think the people saying Moore couldn't have been so naive are forgetting how different the movie industry was 20 years ago, and that this was also the first property of his to be possibly made into film.

I wasn't aware that Joel Schumacher and Akive Goldsman where doing Watchmen when Arnie was in consideration.

For three minutes of screentime. Flirt with a girl, fix a broken watch, step into the machine.

Yes, I picked the good ones. The good ones show he's capable of.

Please die.

Only a few of those are considered crap, most of them got an ok reaction critically and audience wise.

I knew it. I knew some sorry ******* would come forward and tell me that Commando was a good film. Or that Lethal Weapon 3 was watchable. Or that, they liked Hudson Hawk because it was "playful with a finely tuned sense of whimsy".

Now that's just pretentious. What right do you have to dictate what people consider good?

He just had to let off some steam :woot:

I need to watch this movie again:woot: Oh Motel Hell also had some great puns.
As for Alan Moore being cool with it in the 80's we have to remember it was the 80's and neon colors were all the rave. People weren't in their right mind. Apt to change, but few do it to such extremes which is cool with me because the book itself will never change.

This is insane, I never heard anything about this, great read!

Yes, he did say that.

Come on ppl. Can someone really blame Alan Moore when subject is movie adaptations of his works? Hollywood did some awfull stuffs regarding adapting comic books to big screen. And Moore LOVES comics.

You shut up! Speed Racer was awesome!
