All US cars MPH to be limited to 80 as max speed

Outside of emergency vehicles and the very rare absolute emergency (getting someone to the hospital, fleeing for your life, whatever) there is no acceptable reason for going over the limit.

But, your right, let's put inhibitor chips in all the cars! While we're at it, lets put scales in front of all the fast food joints...if you're too fat you're stuck with a salad and a slim fast. And let's put chips in cigarettes so that if there is someone within a 20 foot radius it won't light up. Or a beer that checks your blood alcohol to see if you're too drunk...and if you are the alcohol evaporates and you're left with an O'Douls!! Or how about standard 32 inch TVs...no more 56inch plasma or 60 inch rear projection. They just take up space and use too much energy. We don't really NEED any of these things...let's lock it all down!!!

Sorry...went on a rant.
alright, there's a much larger tin of worms here...

and its basically saying that it is up to the individual to monitor themselves and use their own common sense to Guide them through life.

However, i would say what is best for the individual is not always best for the community in the whole and sometimes guidelines do need to be put in place because on average, the individual is pretty dumb.

We are all fortunate to be amongst generally well brought up intelligent rational thoughtful people but we can't use this as a proper cencus of the entire popolus.

A group of people are only as strong as their weaker links and although rules are brought in may feel like they are restricting freedoms of those who know better, they are really there to aid those that can't be trusted to govern themselves.

but it's hard to find a balance in a capitalist society.

I'm a nocturnal person.

But when, and if the metre becomes mandatory,do you have to pay for it?

Toronto Hydro said:
The costs of the smart meter system will be included in the Delivery portion of the rates for residential and small commercial customers at a cost of 47 cents per 30 days service, and in the customer charge for large commercial and industrial customers at a cost of $1.04 per 30 days service.

:cmad: For the rest of the time I own the house... every month I will be paying at least 47 cents for the privilage of having the "smart meter"... And, as with everything else, the cost will go UP over time.

Toronto Hydro said:
The government has mandated that 800,000 smart meters be installed by 2007 and in all homes and business across the province by 2010.

Were they democratic about this?

Or is this one of those "for your own good, so we don't have to vote about it" things?

:csad: The latter. It wasn't part of any election platform. It was just legislated in. Partly because of the huge power outage that hit Ontario and a number of the states a few years back. Mostly because they don't want to actually improve the Hydro infrastructure to handle the load of all the additional houses being built.

Sadly, sometimes that attitude is actually needed. Look at the way civil rights went down.

I have timeshare in Canada, I wonder if my rates will go up.

I find it funny people suggest individuals can be trusted to abide by the rules. I drive a lot, on the highway the speed limit is 70mph i believe and I will admit I go 5-10 over that. However if I am in the left lane I ALWAYS have people on my butt (the car you sicko) who want to go faster so I get over at 80 mph and get passed by quite a speed which would likely be 10-15 mph MORE. That puts A LOT of people at 90+ mph!!!!! This is not acceptable driving. Individuals can not be trusted anymore. The likelihood of a law being passed for this is low, but my God it's getting more and more necessary.

You have to remember we have population increases happening at quite a rate which means MORE cars. MORE speeding. MORE potential for stupid things to happen including deadly accidents.

So the only people who can speed should be those in a profession of saving lives. Cops, fireman, ambulances, that sort of thing.

Individuals? I'm one of them, I can trust myself but the other individuals? Don't trust em for a second.

Oh and leave racecar driving to the professionals on tracks thankyou.

Speeding increases the likelihood and severity of a crash. The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time the driver has to react to a hazard, and for other road users to react to that vehicle. A speeding vehicle requires more time and distance to stop, and is harder to control. Speed is a factor in 30 per cent of fatal crashes and 12 per cent of all crashes.

As speed increases over 100 km/h, the fatality rate of vehicle occupants goes up exponentially. For example, the chances of being killed in a vehicle traveling at 120 km/h are four times higher than at 100 km/h. When a car crashes near 200 km/h the chances of survival are minimal.

Speed of impact is critical for pedestrians, the most vulnerable road users. A 1995 European Transport Safety Council report found that only five per cent of pedestrians died when struck by a vehicle at 32 km/h; fatalities increased to 85 per cent at 64 km/h.

A recent study examined the impact of higher travel speeds on US rural interstates after the repeal in November 1995 of the national speed limit. Researchers found states that had increased their speed limits to 75 mph (120 km/h) experienced a shocking 38 per cent increase in deaths per million vehicle miles than expected, compared to deaths in those states that did not change their speed limits. States that increased speed limits to 70 mph (112 km/h) showed a 35 per cent increase in fatalities.

How f***ing irresponsible.

WTF happens if there's a zombie apocalypse(with the fast, running kind of zombies)???

haver you ever read the zombie survival guide? get off the car and onto the Bike!!! one of the 10 comandments for survival!:hyper:

My Zombie Survival Guide recommends that you forget about trying to outrun/outdrive 'em... eventually you WILL run out of Gas. Instead, hunker down near a gas station with a flame thrower. Then you'll have turned all the ones in your neighbourhood into ash by morning.

Flamethrowers aren't practical because they work on the basis that your enemy feels pain! Grab and old bolt action rifle and as many rounds as you can, run upstair ( destroying the staircase behind you ofcourse ) and welcome yourself to the Zombie shooting gallery!

They're not intended to cause the zombies pain, they're intended to convert them into harmless ash. As opposed to blasting the suckers with a rifle and then having hands and feet coming after you.

Well unless you're firing from the hip, I would assume you would be shooting for the head. :whatever:

What if it there was such a mandate that all cars be set at 80 or even 75mph as top speed? Would you support this? Why or why not?

they should also be made of marshmallows.
then even the worst and most horrible car wrecks will trigger pleasant memories of summer camp , simply by their awesome smell.
and we should have chocolate and graham cracker bumpers.
fender bender? who's up for some smores?
