Amazon said Wednesday that it has struck a deal to acquire the historic movie studio MGM for $8.5 billion, bolstering its efforts to become a top player in Hollywood.

The deal will give the e-commerce and cloud computing giant a famed studio and catalog of film and television titles to beef up its Amazon Prime streaming service, from the James Bond and "Rocky" franchises to TV series such as “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Fargo.”

Cool. Now fix the interface for Prime Video so we can actually browse these titles easier.

If MGM didn't have Bond, they would have been gone a long time ago.

It's a shame, because their past library is second to none. I forgot just the astonishing number of classics they have.

Or rather, had. Apparently all the pre-1986 movies are owned by WB.

Still, this just shift the needle a little on my assessment of Amazon Prime as a hobby streaming project. Maybe Bezos really does want to become a big league film studio.

Again, no:

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer - Wikipedia

Short version: in 1986, Ted Turner bought MGM, and then sold it again. . . but kept its library. That's where Turner Classic Movies came from. Since then, WB bought the library from Ted Turner. The only library Amazon has bought here is the *post 1986* MGM movies.

Yeah, the TCM library is part of what makes HBO Max so nice. Combined with the Criterion stuff, HBO Max is great for film lovers.

Jeff Bezos wants world domination. Bezos already has the supervillain laugh nailed down
