AMC Theatres considering "text zones"

I will never be OK with this. It's rude and against common courtesy.

It must be kept separate from the people that actually want to be immeresed in the movie. But I guess, hypothetically, there could be more money in having additional "texting" screenings, and they could match it by being more strict during normal screenings like theater chains such as Alamo Drafthouse already are. It would be akin to "smoker" and "non-smoker" sections at bars and restaurants.

It's a problem because here in the Chicago area AMC has a stranglehold. There is like a couple Regal Cinemas but they're all up north in the hipster parts of the city. And **** that. :o

It's dumb but if they do it as separate auditoriums then I can just choose a showing that doesn't allow texting or phone usage, so not a complete dealbreaker.

This is interesting because I was invited an attended a local opera preview recently where they encouraged us to use social media during the show. Granted it was just a one time showing and the goal was for them to use us marketers to get the word out and drum up interest across the city.

Why don't they just allow public toilets in the theaters too? That way you can still watch the movie when you need to go to the bathroom.

Same with me.
The two closest theaters are AMC.

I would not be averse to that, actually.

And the further decline of the attention span continues.........

*texting while the most amazing stunt sequence is happening*

Guy- What's going on?

Guy 2- I don't know I wasn't pay attention

*texting while the most important plot twist happens

Guy- Who's he?

Guy 2- I don't know I wasn't paying attention.

I mean if people wanna spend $12 on a movie ticket and just text that's their prerogative. I just dont wanna see someone's phone with the brightness all the way up in the seats in front of or next to me

That is the downside to getting good seats. That usually means you're at the top and can see every single phone.

Bad idea. I'm actually shocked a freaking CEO proposed that, you'd figure he'd be against it.

If people are texting, they're not engaged with the movie at all. In addition to being rude to other customers who paid to watch the movie, why spend $10-$15 bucks if your eyes are on your phone most of the time?

Idiotic. Aron needs a kick in his a**.

A CEO doesn't care if someone is engaged during the movie. They're in the theater they most likely already paid.

Now Im not happy that AMC bought Carmike. If they do this they want be getting my money. This bit here:

AMC Theaters CEO Adam Aron on cell phone use during a movie:

When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.

At the same time, though, we’re going to have to figure out a way to do it that doesn’t disturb today’s audiences. There’s a reason there are ads up there saying turn off your phone, because today’s moviegoer doesn’t want somebody sitting next to them texting or having their phone on. That’s one possibility. What may be more likely is we take specific auditoriums and make them more texting friendly.

Uhh, yes you can, you moron. Its your theater and there should be no phones out during the movie. If they cant follow that rule they arent mature enough to be watching movies in a theater. A quick check of the clock or a super quick check to see if the baby sitter has texted (with a very dimmed screen of course) is one thing, but allowing a bunch of adhd tweens, teens, and 20 year olds to text is a whole other thing. Stop being a giant ***** and tell them to shut the thing off or kick them out.

21st century and stupidity was never been higher. To last one who texted in theater during movie I basically quoted F for Family.

No. If you need to use your phone, step outside the theatre and use it. Don't stand in the walking path/entrance to the theatre, go outside.

Aron has clearly never been to a regular movie theater in years, where it's a common occurrence outside of theaters who enforce their 'no texting' policy like Alamo Drafthouse. Texters have NO business being in a theater at all. It's flat out rude to other patrons.

It angers me that a CEO is suggesting this. People need to learn to be respectful and turn their phones off for two hours, not encouraging bad behavior. It's a movie theater, not a Netflix-equipped living room.

I don't care if it is separate theaters. It's bad for business.

It's weird this is apparently aimed at young people; of all the times in the past 10 years when I've had to tell someone to put their phone away, 2 out of 3 times it's someone middle aged or older.

Usually what I do if i need to check the time or to make sure i havent got some emergency text is stick the phone under my shirt and look down throught the neck hole. Works pretty good and doesnt allow the screen light to annoy my fellow movie goers. I hate when someones phone is on uber brightness and they are holding it right in front of their damn face.

Guess I'll be buying that scrambler/jammer after all.
