Surprised there isn't a thread yet.....

Apparently Anon attacked Sony today. PSN, playstation.com and sony.com are down. Anon says its due to Sony's litigation against some of its members as well as Sony violating peoples privacy.

Thoughts?

There is some speculation that Anon isn't even involved in it and that some others are doing it in their name. I don't know why they think Sony violated customers privacy either, whoever it turns out to be. So much BS and not enough facts.

They say they are doing this for the consumer, yet they are hurting us instead by taking down the services we use.

Congrats Anon, keep giving governments justification to start policing the Internet.

It has been up and down depending on where you live. It's back up now in Dallas. Some users never had an issue. Maybe it was just maintenance like Sony said?

hey guys heres the video this *****e posted on youtube threatening sony:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5kXiCyY61I

I dont understand why these low life idiots cant go get jobs instead of siiting around there pc all day with there pants around there ankles. I just hope these idiots dont force sony into doing something stupid like making us pay for the psn in order to fund a better protected system. Why cant they go after xbox live?

Seriously, why are all these hackers going so hard after Sony? WTF

It's pretty embarrasing on both Sony's account and these sad simpletons that get so worked up about something so as to ruin it for everyone else.

Let´s all pray that Sony wins against geohot, because people have still to understand that, if he wins, it basically means that piracy and hacking is legal, which means that the internet will be no man´s land, everyone can f**k anyone and get away with it.

Threaten is a crime, so, the video they send to Sony is ridiculous, Sony doesn´t even have to break a sweat, they hanged themselves.
And Anon lost every credibility with that stunt.
If Anon is not behind that, they have every interest to stop that fast.

I can´t even understand the all Hackers vs Sony, it doesn´t even make sense.
The consumer owns the console they bought, they can burn it or break it into little pieces; what they don´t own is the service Sony provides, so, i don´t even know how can Sony not win the case.
Another thing is Sony violating people´s privacy....i might be wrong, but isn´t Sony only after people that gave money to Geohot?
To support terrorism is a crime, so, i can´t even understand why people are so upset about?

With the tons of problems the world is facing, people are upset for a fricking console??
This all ordeal makes me ashamed to be a gamer

Yep. This is what a lot of people just don't understand. You own the hardware, but not the software/OS. You agrred to that when you agreed to the EULA.

They aren't even going that far. Sony asked for the IP's for those that went to his site and also those that gave him money. The thing that some can't seem to understand is Sony never saw those IP's. They were given to a court appointed lawyer and even they were just checking to see the state the IP's were from. It was to show evidence that a majority were from California so they could have the case there. Sony does not have your info and will not come looking for you.

Yeah, I was on PSN for quite a while last night and this morning, and didn't have any interruptions at all.

First of all, we don't know if Anonymous is actually behind the threats against Sony. There is no hierarchy to their organization, so anyone can do things in their name and there's no real way of knowing if they are actually connected to anonymous or not. Second of all, the worst whoever is behind the threat can do against Sony is DDOS attacks against their website. Eventually they'll get bored and move on, or if George Hotz loses the lawsuit against him, they'll get scared and decide to stop. If Sony wins the lawsuit against Hotz, it will set a precedent so that any chucklehead who tries to pick up where he left off will end up facing similar lawsuits that they will almost definitely lose to Sony, so it's in Sony's best interest to win the lawsuit and their enemies' best interest not to keep poking the angry dog if it successfully bites someone.

Yeah, but now imagine....if Sony loses.
If Sony loses, it will make piracy legal, it will give them carte blanche to do whatever they want to whoever they want and get away with it, that idea alone is frightening.

But, if Sony wins, every company, if they want to, might start to do the same if they get hacked

Here is an interview with a member of SonyRecon:
http://playstationlifestyle.net/201...ome-anonymous-talks-to-playstation-lifestyle/

It just all seems so silly and pointless to me. Ok, it's your device whatever, do what you want with it. But the problem with hacking on the PS3 was that it severely effected the PS3 online experience, making games like COD almost unplayable.

It's crazy what a company has to deal with now-a-days. Don't piss off a hacker, Sony CEO guy, or your daughter might be sent hundreds of orders of KY Jelly and have numerous 'Chocolate Rain' messages left on her answering machine. :whatever:

I don't know if I've been having issues with PSN the last few days. I don't play online very often and haven't had trouble getting to the PSN store... Hulu hasn't been working very well lately, but that's probably just Hulu being Hulu.

If things get out of hand, Sony only needs to put the police on the case and get everyone of those hackers in jail.

All this "screw the establishment" stuff is just childish.

Wannabe Tyler Durdens of the world unite, and then go to hell.

I dont even think he's worth the attention

So an update. Anon had decided to do a sit in at Sony Style stores and stop with the attacks on PSN, but now the Geo/Sony case is over and I don't know if they are doing it now.

The crazy thing is, Geo and Sony agreed to the settlement terms on March 31st. That's 5 days before the Anon attacks. So they basically did all of that BS for nothing.

The settlement terms for Geo, as I understand it, are as follows:

He is never allowed to circumvent the security on any Sony device as long as it is against the law. If he does, he has to pay a $10,000 fine for each instance up to $250,000.

He is now boycotting Sony products.

Hopefully the rest of the hacking community follows his example and boycotts the PS3 by not hacking it. 90% of the people who want to hack their PS3 aren't going to buy games anyway since they just want to pirate them, so if the 10% who just wants to satisfy their linux-on-stuff-that's-not-a-computer fetish does not buy Sony products I'm sure Sony will not miss their patronage.
