Anonymous Donors Paying Off Layaways

I have a car payment if someone wants to pay that off for me. :P It's holding us back from having a kid.

Yeah , my car got repossessed. I'm living in a van down by the river :csad:

What a great story. It's nice to see someone giving out money like that. Too bad there aren't anymore K-Marts around here.

It's always nice to see stories like this.

Sorry, but I just can't see this as a good story. The people being helped were being irresponsible with their money. I hope they realize this and are grateful that someone's generosity has gotten them out of their financial stupidity.

If I were one of these people, I'd rather donate money to people who can't even afford to shop at Kmart.

You're welcome, America.

What an incredibly condescending thing to post. Assuming that anyone having a hard time affording Christmas gifts for their kids is only that way because they suffer from financial stupidity!! Talk about being something I'd get banned for calling you! It must be nice to sit up there on that high horse and look down on the rest of us.

If you can't pay off $70 of your layaway balance, then you shouldn't be spending $200 on toys for your 4 year old kid in the first place.

And I'm sure you know exactly why they can't afford the last $70. It couldn't have been something unforeseen. I hope it makes you feel better running these people down just because they let someone else do something nice for them. Real classy!!

For every nice person out there...there is the Scrooge or Grinch.

Someone does something nice for others....and someone else finds something about it to complain about.

While Spidey-Bat was being wholly pretentious about it (it's part of his charm, I swear), and it may not necessarily be the proper time to bring it up, but I think it can be said rather resolutely that Americans generally spend too much on luxury/frivolous items.

But there's no reason to presume that this was the reason why this person couldn't pay off a layaway bill at Kmart. So many people work as hard as anyone else and still struggle to make ends meet, and so many others have been victims of layoffs this year and can't find new jobs...I think it's great they want to help these people give their kids a nice Christmas.

You don't need to spend $200 on toys to give your kids a nice Christmas.

OK, so how about you go these stores and lecture people at the layaway counter if this makes you so mad?

Did you even read the article? The woman with $70 left on her bill was a nurse, so she worked and had already paid off most of her own bill. She found out the bill was paid off because Kmart called her about it. There was nothing in the article to indicate that she "couldn't" pay it off herself. Someone just decided to give her some help, and it was a nice thing to do.

It's easy to insist that kids can go without something than actually letting them go without it, especially at this time of the year.

It most definitely is. My parents had no problem telling me "no" when I was little and wanted every Power Ranger toy.

You're just not getting this. Again, I suggest if this makes you so mad, how about heading down to your local Kmart and lecturing the families trying to pay off layaway bills. I'm sure they'll be able to give you an earful about the way you assume they live their lives.

I honestly think you can presume that.

Because, honestly, I don't think I know a single person who isn't either in debt, living beyond their means, or doesn't spend a shockingly large portion of their already meager income on smart phones, electronics, entertainment items, etc.

And y'know, I'm not judging. My mom did the same thing. I had great Christmases when I was little, and she ended up in sizable credit card debt.

It's not awful that a parent would do such things for their children...but its still an unfortunate aspect of our current culture.

Only Kmart near me closed months ago so that isn't an option. Plus I'll be busy fighting SOPA.

I'm certain that your kids will only get a few dollars spent on them as well.

Do you realize how bitter you sound?

I've done layaway on things (not via K-Mart though), not because they're not within my means, but because it's easier for me to do them in incriments rather than all at once. The random kindness of helping people pay is awesome!

But I did laugh when I got to the woman who spent $200 on her child. I mean, really -_-' So I can understand where Spidey-Bat is coming from. I don't see the need to go in-debt for a day that is inherently pointless. Use the money for their birthdays or something, like, a day with actual significance for them personally.

Sigh*.....only the Hype can have a beautiful story about kindness and compassion for thy fellow man, in the midst of all the horrible stories that get posted on here, and turn it into a soapbox lecture about things they don't even know the whole story.

It is easy to be a smug (fill-in-the-blank) while sitting on your high horses in front of a computer moniter and judging others. I will instead applaud these people's actions and encourage anyone help others in need, especially this time of year.

Not one of the recipients ask their contributors to help them out, nor did any of the contributors asked to be recognized for their kindness. It is simply people helping people in need, and it is good to see some of those recipients paying it forward. I only wish more people were as caring.
