I've already really liked ska but lately it's taken a bigger hold on me...musically and influencially as well.

I'm talking about ALL types of ska not JUST poppy ska like Reel big fish and Les than Jake. Don't get me wrong. Those bands are ok...but compared to some of the great ska bands of today and yesterday....they fail.

Anyone interested in ska..

I'm talking about bands such as:

First Wave:
Desmond Dekker
Prince Buster
(I can't think of anymore off the top of my head)

Second Wave:
The Specials
Madness
The Beat
The Selecter
Bad Manners

Third Wave
Reel Big Fish
Less Than Jake
The Toasters
Capdown
Sonic Boom Six
The mighty mighty Bosstones
Sublime
Operation Ivy
The Pietasters

and loads more.

Love live ska!

it was fun twenty years ago, now it's just overrated

basically, an easy to swallow comp of reggea and punk for impresionable teenagers

I have one Mighty Mighty Bosstones album (Let's Face It) and all five Cherry Poppin' Daddies albums (but they kinda hopped all over the place stylistically, so it's hard to consider them SKA).

SKA's okay, but lacks variation. SKA bands are the kinda bands you join in high school because you're first chair trumpet in the high school band so you think you're cool or something. :)

Not my favorite but I'll listen to it now and again/ I like bits and pieces.

Ska is overrated? What planet are you living on?

Anyway, I won't be voting, because while I dig first- and third-wave ska immensely, I refuse to skank. I find the dance style abominable. The dance I prefer to do when listening to ska is what I call the smoke-a-lot-of-pot dance. Either that or the do-homework dance. Perhaps the drink-multiple-alcohols dance. Even the read-comics dance.

Madness
Reel Big Fish
Less Than Jake
Capdown

Thats about it

The rest i hate :)

I loved Madness in the early/mid-80s.

I still have a nostalgic soft-spot for them and some others.

I especially like Jackie Estick's 'Daisy I love you'... go figure. :o :)

I actually know some people that don't really like music/ have no real taste. It's scary.

when you start naming the dance moves for something that should be mostly heartfelt, it becomes overrated

it also becomes overrated when every year there's at least six new ska bands in your city and none of which make it past their second year

oh yea, it also becomes overrated when most bands sound exactly the same

of course, there's many great bands that have made a mark, defined and redefined the genre, but as of recently, no one has done anything new

If you refer to my post, that was really mostly a joke. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Again, where is this mythical city filled with ska bands? Most of the cities I've been to, the only thing that most scenesters and musicians can agree on is that ska sucks.

Thus ruling out every genre of music ever, anywhere, at all. I judge a genre by the best it has to offer, not the dregs.

There's me skanking. Should give you an answer.

I'm a big fan of Streetlight Manifesto, Operation Ivy, the Specials, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, and Westbound Train above all other ska.

I actually reffered to your post because it reminded me of a lot of stuff I've seen in my time, like kids actually reharshing their dance moves for the gigs and naming the steps ("this one's called, picking tomatoes"... I **** you not)

here in Mexico, any city with a local scene has at least a couple of ska bands, mostly formed by high schoolers and most of them suck, the bigger cities have way much more

and yes, there are great exponents of every genre, but there are more mediocre wannabes

I was just saying "Nothing more, nothing less. Love is the best." just the other day.

Ska has quickly become one of my faves.

Ska's good music. I like Reel Big Fish, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Less Than Jake but I also like original ska from groups like The Skatalites. Desmond Dekker is good too but I'd almost call him reggae instead of ska. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sublime and Operation Ivy are also quite good. I went to high school with this great ska band called The Eskapists. They changed thier name to Third String All-Stars and after that I don't know what happened to them.

I call this dance "shopping for groceries".

Basically I put my 2 hands in front of me, like I'm pushing a cart and then make believe I'm putting items into my cart.

It's solid.
