While attending Balticon last year, I met an artist by name of Robert Quill, we chatted back and forth, and finally got around to asking him to commission artwork for me - for a price, of course. This is the result of that meeting:

taylor_leon_color.jpg

Leon Conrad Machiste (pronounced Ma-CHEE-Stay), heroic wandering barbarian. The big blunt object he's holding is a cast iron tree branch.

taylor_imogene_color3.jpg

Imogene, Lost Goddess Of Light and accomplished singer with a 4.5 octave singing voice.

taylor_larrikin_color.jpg

Larrikin, the man-dragon. He's supposed to have pants, but that's not important.

taylor_gold-man_color2.jpg

Gold-Man, the world's first Rastafarian Superhero.

I asked his permission a few weeks ago if I could showcase the artwork he drew for me on the websites I casual visit, and he gave me permission. His personal website is http://www.robertquill.com/ and his e-mail address is [email protected]

Interesting characters and phenomenal colors!!

I'm very pleased with the results. And here are two more he just did for me -

taylor_drcancerous_color.jpg

Dr. Cancerous - the claw says it all

taylor_avantgarde_color.jpg

Avant Guard - part Batman, part Robocop, part Power Ranger, part Tuetonic Knight, all bad ass hero with magic powers and the metallic voice of Peter Weller!

This stuff is really amazing!

The great thing about Robert Quill is he does customized art for people, and his work is very well-produced.

His artwork of the female form is especially good. I'd recommend him to anyone if they wanted a customized picture done.

I saw these before and I told Dr. I saw influences of Charles Vess (Stardust) and Tim Sale in Quill´s art. Really nice stuff.

Glad you guys like the artwork. But my financial situation just took a turn for the worse so I'm not sure how much more will be readily available. Well, here's a rough outline of a He-Man & The Masters of the Universe poster I asked him to draw, with character positions meant to vaguely evoke the imagery of the classic Star Wars trilogy posters:

It would have looked great in color.

Wow I really like his work.

I might have to contact him to commission reference art for my scripts. I really like his style.

Just wait for the color version. But that probably won't be until December.

Well, here're some more black & white shots -

taylor_DefenderWidow.jpg

The Public Defender (looks like Space Ghost) & The Blonde Widow (not a natural blonde, actually a red head with a blonde wig)

taylor_FencerPikeman.jpg

The Fencer (left) and the Pike-Man (right). I know you can't tell from the lack of color, but he's supposed to be a parody of the Green Lantern.

What more can you tell us about the stories for these characters?

Love the dragon the heman poster and especially avant guard but i don't get the helmet. are these your characters?

All of the non-He-Man posters are mine but the characters have not been published. I'm sorry you don't like Avant Guard's helmet, it was based on Robocop's.

Here the full color versions of the Public Defender/Blonde Widow and Fencer/Pike-Man pictures.

Taylor_DefenderWidow_color.jpg

Public Defender with Blonde Widow (not a natural blonde of course but then again very few blondes are natural).

Taylor_FencerPikeman_color.jpg

Fencer with the Pike-Man (an obvious parody of the Green Lantern with a costume based on England's road safety champion the Green Cross Code Man).

What more can you tell us about the stories for these characters?
Well, Maciste (big man with beard and iron tree branch) is the last of a race of people known as the Lundgrenians who were noted for their inhuman/godlike strength and fixation on red meat, Imogene is a Lost Goddess of Light who has lost her memory due to the evil deposed god Mapother who tried to use her in a scheme to overthrow Johwane God King of the Over-World, and Larrikin is a man-dragon kicked out of his tribe for mutual infidelity and aspires to be a wizard (yes, man-dragons can be wizards too). They're a trio who live in the New Zealand-esque fantasy world Zungalia, where the sun is blue, the sky is yellow, and blonde women are feared because they are believed to be succubuses. Maciste and Imogene are currently lovers; if Imogene stares and concentrates long enough, she can either set something on fire or melt it, but she cannot do death rays. Due to her lost memory, she can't fully utilize her goddess powers.

The Public Defender is an unappreciated, Baltimore based superhero (real name Conrad Brooker, occupation: stunt man) who flies, has super-strength/stamina, and is currently having an affair with a super-villainess named the Blonde Widow (actually a red head wearing a wig), an affair that came about partly because they both enjoy watching Max Fleischer Superman cartoons and enjoy old Charlton Heston films. The Public Defender works for the Union of Superheroes (a parody of the Justice League/Avengers type groups), which is led by the mysterious, magically powered, metallic voiced Avant Guard (some believe him to be Peter Weller in disguise), who's 2nd in command is Gold-Man, the world's first Rastafarian superhero, who possesses the power to fire gold beams out of his mouth and conducts the Philharmonic Orchestra in his secret identity. The Public Defender's best friend is the Pike-Man, a Northern Irish superhero who vehemently hates the Wolverine character; the Pike-Man's girlfriend is the Fencer, the pink-purple cad gal with the sword who is secretly a closet pervert with tons of pornography geared toward's the straight female demographic. The Public Defender's arch enemy is Dr. Cancerous (guy with the claw), a Jethro Tull (band) loving villain who laments the fact that he was left-handed and had his left hand turned into a claw. The Public Defender gets in trouble when his affair with the Blonde Widow is exposed by the tabloids - yet ironically, this finally garners him the public recognition he longed for, and is even given his own talk show for it.

Neither story is all the way finished or anywhere near finished.

the shamrock gut looks like the LEAST threatening guy EVER!... but both of these are great! :) Love the color versions just just posted!
He's mostly a gag character/parody/caricature, so he's not really supposed to look threatening. "LEAST threatening guy EVER!" is kind of the idea, it's part of the humor. I'm sorry if my humor fails to amuse you. :csad: But I'm glad you like the artwork. Rob's always taking requests, make your request here [email protected] or visit www.robertquill.com

No, because now I'm responding to it.:woot:

I like the style, but not the colors, they're too soft-lighty, too pastel for me.

Well, I think it's too late to change the colors, but would would you prefer in terms of color schemes?

Not necessarily the scheme, but the tone. They're very soft-light and pastel...I'm just more drawn to more earthy, neutral tones. It may just be personal preference. If the color pallet fits the tone of the story, then there's nothing really wrong with it.
