Hi everyone, I thought I might start this thread to see how many people have Asperger's syndrome or know someone who has it.

Asperger's is a social disorder that limits the ability to identify non verbal gestures such as frowning or subtle flirting. People with Asperger's tend to have advanced mathmatical or logical ability to compensate but not always. As a result, sometimes people with Asperger's can feel anxious when daily routines are disrupted. People with it don't tend to be violent though. More often than not they are the victims, not the bully. It's usually diagnosed at about the age of 5-10 so please no self-diagnosis please.

Mum told me I had Asperger's when I was about year 7. She actually told me for the first time when I was very little but I didn't understand and I often called it cheeseburger's sydrome :woot:.

Anyway, so it would be really cool to meet other people who have Asperger's syndrome. It would be cool to hear stories from people especially like what occupations they're in, what makes them anxious and how they deal with that and also what role if any do superheroes play that would interest people with Asperger's so much.

Ass burgers?!!? No thank you!

All (awfully lame) kidding aside, this is an interesting topic, and I'll gladly partake in the discussion....just after I've had SOME amount of sleep.

This is a really interesting topic... The closest I've come to seeing someone with Asperger's is a character on the TV show ReGenesis. But, I'm subbing to this thread because I think it's interesting. :)

For a short while they thought I may have had Aspergers, later was just diagnosed as ADHD (and was pretty hard to deny at the time... heh).

I attend church with a lady who's son was diagnosed with this last fall. He's under 10 and having some issued integrating socially in his peer group. Of course it really helps his Dad is currently deployed.......

I'm pretty sure Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory has Asperger's syndrome.

Whatever happened to kids just being weird? Now everything is some disease or disorder.

I was apparently diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. I just tend to ignore it as I am me. I truly dislike talking about it.

I work at a grocery store and clean tables in the cafe eating area. As for how I handle the little changes... it can be hard. We started a 'movie night' and it was so different from anything else I was having panic attacks til the store manager snapped me out of it and told me what to do.

Asperger's is of course the #1 self-diagnosed condition on the internet among those looking to not only explain their social awkwardness but also claiming to be smarter than others. You can't swing a dead LOLcat on YouTube without hitting a hundred videos by self-proclaimed "aspies" wringing their hands about how awkward/obsessive/brilliant they are.

Not saying the condition doesn't exist, but just sayin'.

I have a really good friend who has Asperger's. He whoops up on everyone in any video game, the dude is pretty awesome. I didn't even know he had it until he said something about it.

I know what you mean. That's why I said in the original message not to have any self diagnoses. Any trained professional like a psychologist or teacher can define Asperger's better than the average youtube user.

I thought that too. There are quite a few people with Asperger's in pop culture and society. Albert Einstein was believed to have it. In Grant Morrison's Fantastic Four, one of the characters mentioned Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic has it and I believe characters like the Silver Surfer and Doctor Manhatten were based on people with Asperger's Syndrome. I also believe L from "Death Note" is a perfect example of Asperger's

It's also said that George Lucas, Tim Burton, and Bob Dylan might have it.

I've been around alot of children with Aspergers when I was teaching. There are so many different types.

O.D.D is often part of it too. Mainly young adults.

Ghostrider87, former poster here, I'm pretty sure had asperger's syndrome. The way he would rehash the same event and wouldn't listen to common sense reasoning was amazing.

I don't have it or know anyone with it. I hope this thread helps you though!

I kind of agree.

I have a big problem picking up on whether a woman is flirting with me. I also can remember numbers quite well.

But I wouldn't say I have aspergers. I am just weird.

I have a good friend of mine who has obvious aspergers and a friends brother has it. Both of them function fairly well in society albeit occasionally being a little awkward but lots of fun to hang out with.

When I was younger in school, no one had this many allergies and this many behaviorial, social, emotional afflictions.

They had them...they just weren't diagnosed.

Well we all had the kid in the back who ate paste but now every other 5th child seems to have some sort of condition.

Well, the allergies thing may legitimately be on the rise. We're raising kids with inadequate immune systems by constantly shielding them from oh-so-evil germs.

With respect to the actual disorders in question, well, that's trickier. I think the issue has less to do with the existence of certain combinations of traits and characteristics than it does with the label of "disorder."

Because you are probably from a time like when I was young...we were taken to the doctor if a bone was broke or something needed stitched up. These days everytime a kid sneezes they are whisked to the ER to be checked out. There were all kinds of things that people had in the old days that they simply said "Oh well, my ears buzz a lot...but that's life so back to work I go." Now you go to a dozen specialists and they give you a battery of tests and you wind up on medication and you have a name for what makes your ears buzz.

I'm not putting down the people who go and get checked out...I'm just saying that you hear and see more people with many problems today because they are diagnosed with them now as opposed to years ago.
