Would anyone else love to see a big budget adaption of this fantastic manga/anime? It would be brilliant. If Damon lindelof was writing it it would be chillingly good.

I don't know who could play the leads yet but I'll have a think

There's any number of manga/anime that would benefit from competent big screen live-action adaptations, it's by and large a superior (vastly superior) product to Marvel/DC.

ETA: I wish that Attack on Titan were on Crunchyroll, I hear so much about it but I can't watch it.

Japan's doing an adaptation already, the problem with their adaptations is that usualy they follow the manga way too closely, even in some of the comedy bits that don't fit as well in live action.

One problem facing any Hollywood adaptation of a popular manga or anime is white washing.

What possible solutions are there to these two problems?

Not whitewashing and following the plot of the manga/ anime, but not being slaves to every single panel or line, pretty much like what most novel adaptations do.

Attack on Titan would be chalenging considering it has so many false starts, [BLACKOUT]It's been 100 years since the previous major attack or something, but now everyone's a Titan[/BLACKOUT], the plot has also been less about Titans lately, it kind of looks more like Game of Thrones sometimes.

The general concept sounds like a great new idea for Hollywood, but the plot of the manga itself has a difficult structure to turn into film.

Then keep it an anime series. Not everything needs a live action film.

I've only watched the Anime but from what I've see everyone left is European (of German ancestry going by the characters names) except for Mikasa who is half Asian so Attack On Titan would be the one film which wouldn't have to worry about being whitewashed.

Very true. There is only one Asian (Japanese I assume) in the series so, if anything the entire show should be white people.

I would fully expect it to have a diverse cast

True, but i was talking about most popular anime/ mangas, Attack on Titan, Berserk and Fullmetal Alchemist are the ones that feature non-Asians heavily, but others such as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Bleach, etc do not.

Watching Aldnoah Zero lately, which you should all watch.

Bad guys are white (if I understand correctly), and good guys are Japanese, so it's perfect for a Hollywood adaptation :-)

Some mangas have an historical setting, like Vinland Saga or inspired by Medieval Europe, like so many other fantasy films such as Berserk.

YES! I'm aware of the Japanese version being made and would like an American version too.

I don't understand our culture's obsession with turning everything into a (live-action) movie. It's almost as if the property is somehow worse or less valid if it is not on the big screen.

Each story works best for its medium. Attack on Titan is a great piece of fiction that took advantage of the serialized style and nature of the anime/manga medium in order for it to be fully fleshed out. There's no point in cramming all that into a 2-hour movie, especially since most Shonen animes already have a cinematic feel of their own.

This really applies to all anime films. Although I like the Death Note films, I don't think they were needed, and are vastly inferior to the anime itself.

If anything this is the only adaptation where most of the cast does need to be white.

I doubt any AoT movie would be better than the books. The only exception I can think of a manga being outdone by its movie was Oldboy (I'm told the Raid movie was also superior compared to its book), which (including The Raid) was not even handled by either Japan or Hollywood. Like Lord and Shikamaru said, I wouldn't want the unique structure that works best in manga-format to be crammed into another average Americanized movie that misses a lot needed from the books.

Probably. Movie adaptations don't stick to the source material most other times, don't see why this would be different.

Only Germans that speak Japanese should be cast!

I always wanted to see a film or tv series adaption of ''Shiki''

Is there a separate thread for this? I'm still waiting for Ghost in the Shell.

They merged the Anime and TV show sections so.. I'm not quite sure.

May I point out that when the Japanese themselves adapts anime into live action films, they just lack the resources to make it work on a visual level. Either the CG is bad, or their cameras (and the cinematography) makes everything look cheap and dreary.

On the other hand, when they do have a budget, something doesn't translate well. For example, the new Lupin live action film looks well made enough..but doesn't feel like Lupin at all. I think it has to do that the trailer has more of a modern 'Mission Impossible' vibe, whereas I think Lupin works better as a timeless Spielbergian adventure/heist film.

Lupin III's getting a movie? In its defense, it was always a bit more adult than a general Spielbergian adventure/ heist due to Fujiko, it's more like James Bond, with this more erotic side to the story. Either way, glad to see Japan making more of these good looking film productions, Rurouni Kenshin had the perfect look and feel to it, being close to the manga but also looking like an expensive film, what it needed was more work on the script to make the supernatural elements fit and for the villain to not be so campy.

I've only seen the trailers for Rurouni Kenshin but yeah, it looks like it has a higher budget than most Japanese anime adaptations.

Attack on Titan is an interesting case in that most of the characters actually are already white/German with Mikasa being notable for being the world's last Asian.
