Attack on titan - the movie

Hollywood to the rescue. Their adaptation will be more big budget and if they cast white people it's actually accurate.

I finished watching Attack On Titans on Netflix, and as a big anime fan it is probably one of the best I've ever seen, from story to characterization to the white-knuckled tension that really grabbed your attention once the plot is kicked into overdrive. However, I think a HBO series would be a better idea than a movie, because you won't have to condense the story down into 2 1/2 hour movies. But no matter what, I do hope Hollywood would have the interest to develop this because I think it will be huge.

May I point out that when the Japanese themselves adapts anime into live action films, they just lack the resources to make it work on a visual level. Either the CG is bad, or their cameras (and the cinematography) makes everything look cheap and dreary.

On the other hand, when they do have a budget, something doesn't translate well. For example, the new Lupin live action film looks well made enough..but doesn't feel like Lupin at all. I think it has to do that the trailer has more of a modern 'Mission Impossible' vibe, whereas I think Lupin works better as a timeless Spielbergian adventure/heist film.

Gatchaman (aka Battle of the Planets) was also adapted into the big screen in Japan, but it wasn't received well.

Japan is full of interesting franchises, if Hollywood started to take from there, i'm sure we would see some high quality stuff, as well as some epic failures.

One problem with Attack on Titan for me are the false starts, it starts in the past, but then the real start is at the academy, but then the real start is when the main character knows he can turn into a Titan, etc. The behavior of the human titans is also very weird, the revelation of their goals and plans will make or break this story overall.

I think the starship troopers movie is sort of what a hollywood attack on titan would be like in terms of structure.

What young actor has that thousand yard stare like Eren Yaeger?

Japan's doing an adaptation already, the problem with their adaptations is that usualy they follow the manga way too closely, even in some of the comedy bits that don't fit as well in live action.

One problem facing any Hollywood adaptation of a popular manga or anime is white washing.

Plus...all of the giants will be wearing shorts.

The first posters have been released.

The movie has Haruma Miura as Eren, Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin, Satomi Ishihara as Hanji, Nanami Sakuraba as Sasha, and Takahiro Miura as Jean.

I know it's a year old but no one's posted the Japanese car commercials parodying Attack on Titan

Those posters look amazing. It looks like the filmmakers really get it. Can't wait to see it!

I will wait for the feign film to be highly praised and successful and hollywood to remake it.

Oh lawd.

This one makes me afraid they will once again translate everything to live-action, even the cheesyness and exagerated characteristics that work in animation/ manga, but awkward in live-action.

I dig it, looks like they're incorporating more modern weapons into it though. I mean, the hips cable things are pretty high tech, but even those are powered by compressed air. The Rocket Launcher is a bit beyond steampunk.

Maybe they find some pre-apocalypse weaponry.

They don't get it at all. A "faithful" adaptation wouldn't have the entire cast being Japanese. This manga like Fullmetal Alchemist, Berserk, Claymore, Code Geass etc is set in a fictional European setting with characters who are clearly based on Germanic folk (for the exception of Mikasa who is a happa).

Aside from the ethnic/racial inaccuracy the movie looks like total **** anyway. Hollywood seems to pick the most inherently Japanese manga to adapt while Japan is adapting a manga that is clearly western based. At this rate both film industries will be responsible for never allowing a good anime/manga adaptation to come into fruition.

The movie also features Shu Wantanabe, Ayame Misaki and Rina Takeda as new characters Fukushi, Hiana and Lil.

I love Ayame Misaki! Saw her performance in Cutey Honey and Gobusters and I became of fan of hers. I'm glad she's part of the cast in Attack on Titans, although I wonder what her character will be since it will be made for the movie. It's also cool to see Shu Wantanabe from Kamen Rider OOO in this movie as well.

The manga creator, Iseyama Hajime, is heavily involved in the making of the live-action film and he was the one who suggested the idea to create new characters as to fit the story for the (limited duration) live-action. Also, he mentioned that he doesn't mind the actors appearances doesn't look like the manga, he only wants them to have the same spirits as the manga characters and he has approved all the live-action cast. Iseyama supervised the script writing, as well.

Not much information revealed yet. I'm really curious about the setting. Will they stick to the medieval Europe background setting for the cities inside the walls? But I don't see that happening since all the cast are Japanese. I'm also wondering about how the movie will end. I just hope it won't end horribly like GANTZ live-action. But I guess that's what happens when a live-action film is made while the manga is still running.

I'm usually against any Hollywood adaptation of Japanese manga (esp. after the Dragonball catastrophe), but I actually want this one to be picked up by Hollywood, for so many reasons. First, the characters are obviously all Europeans, so I'd love to see international caucasian cast speaking English in various European accents in the live-action. Second, Hollywood obviously have more money to make the right adaptation than Japan. The Japanese live-action looks okay, so far... but I really wonder just how far they can work all the FX out. Cause the anime is definitely hard to beat.

I hope Hollywood will pick this up someday, supervised by the manga creator and do it right.
