I just had to start a thread for one of the best animated series I've seen since the DC Universe cartoons.

I would have put it in Anime/Manga, but even the show's creators said it wasn't wuite anime but based on the style. And that's one of the things I liked about the show, 'cause I never liked anime with all the over acting and stuff like that and it all seems the same, but Avatar was different.

I recently got into it, when I first saw the trailer for the movie I thought I'd learn more about it.

I was pleasantly surprised with how well done it was. A very high quality show and not just for kids.
It reminded me of a Kung-Fu Harry Potter. It had elements of Harry Potter, The Lord of The Rings, and even Starwars, with how the show was structured.

If it was a cartoon series it could have been a book as popular as Harry Potter. Even the seasons are called books, which I found unique and cool.

And that last episode blew me away. I mean wow! What a finale to a great show. When I had watched Sozin's Comet, I felt like I just got out of a movie theater after watching a big blockbuster.

And what is such a shame about the show, is what a horrible live action movie they made out of it. If you have not seen the series but have seen the movie please doin't think the show was that lame and boring.

Do yourself a favor and see all three seasons. The show is amazing. I know this is old news since the show's finale was back in 2007 but, as I said I'm new to it, and that's the only good thing that came from that movie, peaking my interest enough to wanna' check out the animated series.

As for that movie, they should have known better than to get one of the worst directors to work on it and write. He said he was a fan but that's crap, he just wanted to get his name on a successful movie, but he just turned it into crap. He totally missed the point. If they had done it right and got a good director that movie could have been as good as a Harry Potter film.

I don't mean this to be a bashing thread but, it has to be said.

They missed so many elements and changed things that never should have been changed, and right away M. Night had to start changing things right away, and it's stupid of the creators to have let him do what he did.

And he had the worst cast, the kids couldn't act, and to have the water tribe be mostly Native American and then have white actors play Sokka and Katara and Gran Gran, (which they couldn't even call Gran Gran, she was just Grandma, I mean come on, it souinds like a small thing but if you know the show, that's her name, Gran Gran. How hard is it to just keep that in even.) Anyway, they stuck out like a sore thumb.

And then to cast that horrible ugly kid who couldn't even act, ugh! So
stupid! Non of the kids could act, and then there's the guy from Twilight playing Sokka, and that wasn't Sokka at all, same goes for all the characters. And the Fire Nation should have been played by Oriental actors, I hope that's the right term, I don't mean any disrespect.

M. just cast Middle eastern/Asian actors just 'cause he is. And then he said 'cause he's Asian he changed the pronunciation of certain names, well I'm sorry but they had alot of asian/oriental people working on the cartoon, I'm sure they know how to pronounce those names. Or maybe they just wanted to be different. Enough of that, it's just a shame the movie wasn't good enough to get the sequels and respect it deserves.

The cartoon introduced a new mythology right up there with some of the
best trilogies and fantasy epics. The show just gets better and better, the story builds and builds, adding more to each episode.

It has verything, from great action to touching moments. Sometimes almost enough to bring a tear to your eye or maybe it did make you cry at times.

And it balanced humor with action so well. I haven't laughed out loud at a cartoon in a long time and this had me laughing quite a bit. There are some really great moments in this series, well, the whole show is great.

It had some of the best villians ever. And it was so nice to see the characters mature, both in character and in age, there are three seasons/books, but it's set within a year. And either they had the actors lower their voices or, they just got older as the show went on and their voices changed which worked out well either way, 'cause I'm pretty sure the kid who play Aang was an actual boy. And the whole cast was very talented. It was so nice to have Andrea Romano working on the series, she brought in some great talent as usual, some being from the animated DC Universe which she has worked on for so many years, she always knows just who to cast, and is so good at what she does.

Lex Luthor's voice, Clancy Brown from Justice League and Superman TAS, was in the show as Long Feng, playing yet another good villian.

And then there was Mako as Uncle Iroh, who is such a beloved character, and they ruined him in that sham of a movie.

It's sad that Mako's passed now, but at least he finished the series, it wouldn't have been the same without him as Iroh. They even had a segment in his honor in one episode.

The show is just filled with so many great and memorable characters.
I mean some cartoons have a few but, there are a ton of lovable characters, awesome heroes, and evil, yet cool, villians, and don't forget one of the funniest, I thought anyway, characters, The Foaming Mouth Guy. Probably the Avatar's biggest fan, so overwhelmed by him that he'd start screaming, foam at the mouth then, pass out.:woot:

So, if you haven't seen the series, rent it, or they have all three seasons at Netflix.com available to watch right away.

And I I'm sorry to rant about that live action movie it's just that is was an insult to a wonderful series, which deserved a way better movie, or at least just leave the show as is and don't mess with it if you can't do it the right way. They should have had it like the Harry Potter movies, make it faithful to the show or don't do it at all. I know there's alot there, but just like with certain books, of course you can't keep everything in, but at least keep in the most important parts, keep the characters as they are in the series, stay faithful to the source material. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

And as I said, the show's right up there with Starwars, Harry Potter and, The Lord of the Rings. And it's not a copy of any of that, IMO, it's its own thing, yet has those elements that make for a good fantasy epic. It does pay tribute to certain movies out of respect, not as a rip off. That's one of the things I thought was cool also about the show, there's even a bit of a nod to Indiana Jones.

:up::applaud

Well, there was an Avatar thread for the longest time when the show was soon on, but naturally petered off into nothing after it finished, so this new thread might seem a tad redundant. HOWEVER, I suggest keeping it around because it's as good a place as any to discuss the upcoming sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

Well like I said this is new to me. So there will be a sequel? I saw something the other day but, I just glanced at it. Wasn't sure if it was real. I thought I saw it was set 70 years after the original.

I hope it's good. I think they should have had it set when the group was all in their 30's. Just to see how they cleaned up the world after the war, like Zuko mentioned in his speech at the end of the series finale. And to see any new battles, which I'm sure we will in the new show.

I am sorry to start a thread about an older show, but as I said it's all new to me, and I just wanted to talk to other fans, and as you said, we can keep it up and talk about the sequel series. So that's cool.

I always thought it was cool how they had positive characters like Toph, showing she can deal with being blind, and laugh about it, make light of it but not in an insulting way, and not like they were trying to teach you a lesson and stuff like that, y'a know.

And when it came to the scary episodes, they might not have been really scary but, they did do a good job at having some good creepy moments. Well I guess they were scary, especially for kids watching it.

Like the Puppetmaster, that was an awesome episode. even The Swamp, another of my faves, had some eerie moments, but Puppetmaster was the best at being creepy and all that.

The series deserved all of the awards it won. It had some nice artwork also.

Beautiful show to watch. I really liked Wong Shi Tong. I think I spelled that right, but you know who I mean, the big Owl Librarian. :yay:

They also had some very cool vehicles in the series, like the firenation Airships, not the ones that looked like hot airballoons, although those were okay, but the War Ships were awesome.

And the Tanks were pretty cool too. I'll have to find out more about the sequel show so anyone with good info, please let us Avatar fans know.

The Legend of Korra sounds like it will be a good continuation of the series. It will be interesting to see what characters will still be there and how Aang died.

Yeah. The basic premise is that Korra is a teenage girl from the Southern Water tribe and the new Avatar. She's spent the last couple of years traveling the world and mastering Water Bending, Earth Bending, and Fire Bending. She has now come to Republic City, a Yew York sized culturally diverse steampunk metropolis and your standard sci-fi/fantasy wretched hive of scum and villainy, to find Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara and the world's only Air Bending master. Then they start fighting crime.
